After my best attempts to remove my mangled propeller failed, we took to sea again. The 100 mile passage to Olbia was slow going at times

Sam, that was very impressive seamanship getting out of the marina and into the notorious Straits of Bonifacio. Several years ago, in a very comfortable & near new 43' Beneteau, it took us 3 attempts to cross those straits (from Porto Vecchio to Porto Cervo). Huge headwinds & huge seas bashed us back each time. So glad to see you had great weather for "Pickle" to make the trip. Looking forward to see how the propeller repair works out. 🙂

When my engine crapped out I sailed into my marine and the dock master called me to the office was upset because I violated the rules of the marine but when I asked him why he did not send the powerboat out to help me when I called him for over 15 minutes on the radio. He said he never heard it. That’s when i noticed the radio was off. He was surprised. Turned out the fused pop on the electric outlet the radio was plugged into.

😮Years ago I sailed small yachts, about 29 feet, from Kiel into and around the Danish islands. These yachts had no engines so everything was done under sail, using warps and "rowing". Great skills to learn which stood me in good stead on several later occasions.

I like the new tidy boat, don't think it's ever been that organised. Wonder how that happened. Anyhow; nice slick scoot out of the marina under sail. Makes one wonder what it was like before motors on sailing vessels. I am sure there were lots of scratched paint and dents in those days. You could try finding a hard to dry out on attached to a pile. Limited tides in the med but it might allow you to get the prop off.

Hi Sam, You should try leaving marinas under sail more often - makes them much less scary. And maybe try sailing into them too - now THAT does get the Adrenalin going! I once saw a looong French Beneteau come straight in, drop most sails and turn to stop in their berth - glad no one was parked in it (herhum me...).

Sam, you confirm my belief that you need three things to be a long distance cruiser: sailing skills (10%), fix it skills (40%), nerve (50%). But a partner with a positive attitude is invaluable.

for the singlehanded racers we always have a paddle onboard! this can work for propulsion or for steering in crisis - also boathook for pushing off during sailing in or out circumstances. Should have some way to make the shaft length vary is what I prefer. I used my to pass the "complete alternative rudder system" requirement for singlehanded transpac.
