Turtle eggs. This time of the year, painted turtles dig a small hole with their hind feet on land and lay an egg. If they are startled during the process, they may release their egg as they retreat into the water. Sometimes, they don't make it up on land before prematurely releasing their egg. Or, if they need to lay the egg and it's too difficult to get the hole dug in time, they will release the egg in the lake. It's kinda like, when you gotta go, you gotta go. I've been camping there many years during late June and have watched the process in the evenings quite a few times. I've seen as many as five painted turtles digging around our campsite at a time. Love it up there. Every season is amazing. Just came back last week from my annual trip. Didn't want to leave. And yes, the black flies were the worst I've ever seen.

I took my kid to the North Shore during the first week of June. It was my mission to make an impression on this 14 year old, which happened to the highest degree. Although I had been to Minnesota multiple times in the past filming the Iron ore trains further inland, it was both our first time for Minnesota nature. We banged out place after place up and down the shore (Highway 61), including lake hikes just south of the Boundary Waters. We had a fantastic time, which words can't illustrate. The weather was perfect - highs in the 60s generally, with lows in the 40s. The only problem was the flies - big time. Several locals were telling us it's worse this year than they remember it ever being. I read online the bug problem was expected to be this way due to the record flooding earlier in the year. I made an impression on my kid for life, although he's always liked nature. There is no substitute for the awesome experience we had. On our last day, he said "I'm really going to miss this place." That's a 14 year old. I knew then I had done good, and mission accomplished.

I was a guide for 2 years with the boyscouts. Love just seeing the area even if I can't be there all the time. Going again this fall to knife lake. Also, if I had to guess about the rocks....it's because everything was carved out by glaciers in the last ice age so a lot of unique granite formations

Jewelerguy is right on about the turtle eggs. As far as the bugs are concerned, I would recommend a lightweight bug suit, and keep the campfires going, trying to get the smoke all over you. I liked your presentation; you were honest to your viewers and yourself. and doing things that make your trip likable to you (isn’t that what it’s all about)? And lastly I loved your interaction with the moose and her baby. I have had multiple moose encounters, one moose attacked me while I was photographing her (I didn’t see the nursing baby, but it came out in the photo. I have pictures of the whole thing. Having spent 2.5 months in Alaska, I had numerous bear encounters (as well as in Vermont and Maine). Well I’m done rambling so until next time, enjoy the wilderness.

Those were Turtle Eggs (probably Snapper) in the water, but not sure why whatever it was didn't eat them, unless they were coming back for them. Enjoyable, relaxing video. Thanks from Ontario, Canada. Happy paddleing...

My dad and I were paddling down a river in the BWCA when we came upon a mother and two calves! They were crossing the river ahead of us! It was such a neat experience because we had yet to see a moose in the Boundary Waters after all the trips we had taken. So glad I found your channel Jodi, your videos inspire me to get back out in the canoe!

Hi Jodi, always nice to have a private, beautiful campsite. I would have stayed there also. Years ago, I was camped in a lean-to at Chimney Pond in Baxter State Park in Maine. There was a female moose living at the campsite all summer, and I woke up one morning and she was laying against the front of the lean-to. She never bothered anyone, and what a great experience. The best time to catch fish is at sunrise and sunset along the shore where you see the fish jumping. Enjoyed your vid dear.

I've lived in many different US States and traveled a lot in my life, but the BWCA is my all-time favorite place on earth! My first trip in was a 10-day trip with a friend, covering a near-50mi loop. I can't imagine a solo 3-day trip. That's insane! Very cool video. Thanks for sharing!

Had to canoe past 2 moose feeding in a channel between 2 lakes back in the early 90's . They were standing in water to the top of their backs. They would put their heads in the water and pull up a mouth full of water weeds They finally moved over to 1 side and we paddled past on the other. We were pretty nervous about having them that close.

Thanks! I'm happy to share the adventures. There are loads of things to check out in MN. September is a great time to get out when bugs are less of an issue. Plus the leaves are crazy cool! State parks sometimes have small cabins that you can stay in, or vrbo, lodges, etc. No need to suffer bugs and tents if it's not your jam!

fish and early morning and late evening are the best times small mouth bass walleye and northern are in most of those lakes a great bait is a rapala floater or a deep diving shad rap also made from rapala

thanks for sharing, good luck with your channel, I enjoyed it. Suggestion: some weight in your canoe can make a world of difference blowing around-wise. You could try a bin with a lid, fill it with water. (30 gallons x 8#/gallon=240 pounds) need the lid to keep from sloshing out, need a bucket or something to put water in and take out. Happy trails

What a great video. It's nice to see a confident female doing a solo trip! I'd planned on making my first solo trip (7 days) in 2021 but too many stupid people were in there and then it was so dry that I decided to put it off. Maybe next year. I hope you don't mind me making a few suggestions... * Picaradin is a wonderful mosquito and biting fly repellent. * Light your lighter before opening the fuel valve on your stove. * Try a few different color jigs and artificial bait or better yet...bring some leeches! You WILL catch fish!

Thanks for the video. Use to live in MN got to BWCA a few times loved every minute of it. Always went in from Ely great town. Mother Moose with a baby are like a bear and her cubs don’t want to surprise either one. But the only thing that put the fear of god in me is a Bull Moose in the fall during rut. I now live in north Idaho and have had a bull stare me and my truck down. I backed up he didn’t. They don’t have all the wires connected that time of year and fear nothing. I really miss the flat water. Thanks again.

Bull Moose in full rutt are just as dangerous as a Grizzly. Your talking about and animal as big and wide as a 1984 Ford Escort Wagon, and it's hopped up on pure testosterone and has a brain the size of a walnut. I had one put me and my father up a tree for 4 hrs when I was a teenager. Dad was a Airborne Ranger in Vietnam and stated when I was laughing going up the tree" Get up that damn tree, I didn't survive with 2 purple hearts and a silver star with an Oak leaf cluster to come home and die to this asshole" I laughed even harder. I told him we could shot it, and he said"Hell no, it's outta season and that's to much paperwork, hang tight!"😂😂🤣

My brother and I were canoeing down stream at the Poplar River and we came around the corner and there was a very large Moose standing there in the river. He wanted to try and paddle past it and I was having a heart attack. Lol

Wonderful campsite, but I never did hear any loons? Good job on your videos and sharing your passion for the bwca with us is great. One thing I really like about your videos is the tidbits of knowledge that you share, such as, considering dead trees when selecting your tent site, whether or not to have a fire because of the wind, and really important, was the clip of showing you putting out your fire before going to bed.👍 One last thing regarding your reaction to the blackfliy bites,...would benedryl help? They made some noises and sang the first night of the trip. I think the loon on the lake had a baby on her back when I saw her, so maybe that’s why she was quiet? I think you’re right, Benadryl spray will be packed next trip!

We just went through Mudro a few weeks ago and the water was waaaaay higher. Was this from last year? With the water so high this year and the wind at our backs we made it to Thursday bay on Crooked in ONE DAY. We have never made that time before. It was super hard to get back out though. Speaking of the latrine there was a new type I've never seen before. Super fancy now! super spoiled! lol

Just curious. Why not paddle your tandem from the bow seat, but facing the stern? Is it not a symmetrical hull? Just add ballast if your gear is not enough. You can adjust the trim as necessary.

I sit in the bow seat and face the stern when Paddling solo. That alone worked wonders when I’ve paddled a smaller and heavier boat. Mine is large and fairly lightweight. So I typically start sitting in the bow seat and end up kneeling towards the center when facing any sort of wind or needing to turn a bunch to navigate creeks/rivers. I do think you’re right, extra weight would help!

They are water shoes. So I have wet feet, but they dried out in 10ish minutes. I also bring a pair of dry shoes to wear around camp but I didn’t really use them this trip since it was hot enough to dry the water shoes quickly!

J-stroke? Meh... Assuming the canoe you're using is rented, why not choose to use a solo canoe and a double-bladed paddle? A solo canoe is lighter for portaging, better balanced when loaded with you and your gear, and shorter for easier handling in windy conditions. And the double-bladed paddle is much more efficient. Just make sure you have a single-blade paddle with you if your trip route requires paddling in white water since it's easier and more efficient to draw and cross-draw when quick maneuvering is sometimes necessary.

This canoe is my personal canoe. I’d love to use a solo, but I planned this trip maybe 10 days before it happened. Renting was an unlikely possibility at that point so I didn’t even try. But sound advice! I haven’t loved using double bladed paddles though, I know so many people swear by them, maybe I just haven’t tried the right one.

You're terrible at fishing, but I love your persistence. Once you're more skilled at it, it is the persistence that will pay off. I will give you a quick tip. Take your first casts from shore while trying to not spook any fish that may be close to shore. Only then, after several casts of keeping your shadow and silhouette out of any close by fish, should you wade out into deeper water. You could have a monster cruising your shoreline for a snack and you wading in scared it to the middle of the lake. Think like a bear. Bears don't just wander into a stream for salmon, they crouch low approaching the current. Ready to rip a paw over and tear a fish right off shore. Then, if they don't see anything, they wade out and pick a good spot and don't move. That's the approach. Doesn't mean you'll catch anything but it greatly improves your odds on those "special" fish.
