As a long time watcher I must say I have absolutely never seen or had an issue with your lighting. You mention struggling with it often, but I can literally never tell. From a viewer's perspective there is no issues watching when something is recorded during the day/afternoon/night/artifical light vs natural haha. Don't be too hard on yourself lol, film whenever!!

Hi Fern! Just a note about mealy bugs. Root mealies and foliage mealies are a completely different insect. While both are scale insects, they are a different genus, thus they have different feeding behaviors. Root mealies live in the soil and feed exclusively on roots while foliage mealies live on the foliage and feed exclusively on leaf tissue. Root mealies will never venture out of the soil to the leaves and vice versa for foliage mealies. Hope this makes you feel a bit better 🙂
@josiemojica367410 ай бұрын
Have you considered dunking entire plants with mealies? This way you treat in all crevices and get soil as well (in case you have soil mealies).
@bea_hou10 ай бұрын
Try spraying isopropyl alcohol on your compacta, instead of just using a q-tip. It will NOT kill the leaves or the plant. I've done this with a few of my Hoya compactas, as well as many other plants. The only plant it effected negatively was my monstera albo's leaves (it burned a few leaves). I didn't lightly spray either. I made sure they were FULLY saturated to kill anything that was hiding (especially in the compactas). It worked like a charm with no casualties (only a few burned monstera albo leaves).

I recommend using a spray bottle with the alcohol and just going to town on the Hoyas. I've never had an issue drenching my plant, but then I know I 100% got those mealies. Especially on a compacta!
@diannklotzbier744710 ай бұрын
I recently had mealies on my compacted hoya. I decided to spray the whole plant with half water and half alcohol. The spray really worked in all the crevices. I didn’t wash off the alcohol. The mealies are gone and the plant is healthy.

Hi Fern, I've been watching your channel since 2021, I really love watching your journey! I just wanted to say that you can use undiluted 70% alcohol on your hoyas. Just spray and let dry. Of course, keep out of high light until they dry, but it works on mealies and also helps the flat mites. I also use sulfur once every 3 months as a preventive for flat mites, but spraying the alcohol opposed to using a q tip is SO much easier. ❤

Hey Fern, thanks for a nice long chill plant video. I enjoy listening while I’m doing my own plant chores. 😃 To give the seedlings the best chance, pot them up once they have at least their second set of leaves. I have a Milsbo tall and I’m wondering if you are locking the left door before closing the right door on your Milsbo? There should be a lock at the top and the bottom. I had the same problem until I realised that. 🤦♀️

I have my weekly battle with mealybugs. You should also wipe down the shelf including the underside and vertical supports where these plants were. Mealybugs like to hang out on the glass and metal. They also like to hide on the underside of that rim on the plastic planters. Or really anything. They are evil.

Tip to remove mealy bugs from Hoya compacta- uproot the plant and jerk and shake it inside a container filled with water. Water will reach inside all the crevices and remove the mealy’s Change the water until you don’t mealy’s anymore Before this step you can also soak it in soap water for a while

Fern with your compacta, get a spray bottle, you can get an alcohol bottle from Dollarama and just spray it when you remember because you'll never ne able to get them all. I also made a tea tree and alcohol bath when my big one got mealeys and dunked it head first in, wrap saran wrap around the top of the pot tp keep the soil in. Good luck. Fernnnn oh my goodness. Loved this video, I wish you luck and success with eradicating your pests!! 🦟🦠🥊I was thinking, maybe if you pot up all of the Obliqua together it will seem less like the plant is everywhere you look and more like a lush, jungle-y friend who can bring you joy again? Just a thought! I don't have any plant friends IRL so watching your chores while I do mine is so motivating and helpful 💚

Ohhh i gagged when u had to cut the compacta! Everytime before i water i bring my plant to the sink and spray it and the soil with a mixture of dish soap, rubbing alcohol and water. I find this prevents pests and keeps root mealys at bay as well.

For that frosted heart, I never do anything special to mine. Those frosty leaves keep growing like that no matter where I put it. But I do notice that when I moved it into my bedroom with less lighting, the new leaf came out slightly smaller in size. But when I put it near the light again (bright indirect light), the size increases again (well lots of plants experience this too anyway). When it comes to watering, just like other syngoniums, they're pretty thirsty so they hate being dried out. Also you may wanna wipe those leaves pretty often because they have that frosty look so I've been fooled twice, first I thought it was just a frosty situation but turns out it was a very thick dust 😂 and the second one was I thought there were some frosty dots showing up but they were actually very very small bugs (?) or pests (?) i still cannot figure out what that was but it was definitely disgusting lol so happy for your frosted heart finally joining the plant gang! ❤️

I think Hoya cystiantha aka campanulata does good in moist conditions and warm and humid temperatures. It also might not need too high of light, from what I understand from thin leaved Hoyas. So I suggest rerooting it again but in a cup with drainage holes and a water reservoir, and keep the plant in your cabinet but further away from the light. Hopefully that helps!
