Sailing Project Atticus

Sailing Project Atticus

Күн бұрын

I’ve been installing a watermaker on our sailboat Atticus II so that we can raise our daughter off grid and out in nature. But right now the boat is a total mess, and I’ve still got a ton of work to do before my wife and baby move back aboard. Honestly I don’t know how I’m gonna pull it off.

Works really well. I sometimes use more layers too. If you need to have clean hands during messy work, rip off a layer and proceed. Smooth! Also protects a bit better agains tears.

I find that my hands get so waterlogged in my gloves I need to peel the inner layer off eventually anyway to let them breathe.

use som thin cloth gloves as the first layer with a couple of latex gloves over them. It stops the sweating.

The amount of work accomplished is MUCH harder than Jordan can portray. A huge amount of work was done here. I have a Pacific Seacraft boat and the challenge of a really well-built boat is installing new systems. Congratulations! Water and a laundry make for a much happier life aboard.

those drill holes have exposed the wood to possible rot - check out magic carpet / Aladino who oversize the holes and refill with fibreglass epoxy and then drill the actual holes and no water can seep into the end grain - maybe put it on the honey must do list for next haul out - well done and understand your time restraints - happy sailing

“One small step”.? ….. you two have made huge steps!!! I am so impressed the “tension “ of getting ready for splash. It was movie type excitement. Not only should you guys write a book about your adventures but also someday plan a movie! With your talent it could be a blockbuster! You could probably work a great story around all the holes you drilled,in the boat, how you saved an entire desert island with the water maker😜! Etc. As always have fun , be safe and see you next week.

When your hands are sweaty and they have to go into rubber gloves, many people find putting corn meal on your hands before putting the gloves on really helps. Why corn meal works and wheat flour doesn’t I have no idea. (By corn I mean maize, apparently the word corn refers to the dominant starchy grain grown in an area, which in the USA is maize, but elsewhere other grains) The crack of dawn is also a great time to walk the dog. When my first born’s first tooth came in her mother said she thought there was a tooth coming in, stuck a finger in the child’s mouth to feel the tooth, and got bitten. When the second tooth came in, same thing. When the third tooth came in she almost made the same mistake but at the last second wised up.

Good job on the install! I have no sailing experience, but I used to work as an offshore engineer on Gulf of Mexico oil platforms. When we inevitably ran into water maker issues on our older systems/platforms, I got my fair share of experience helping troubleshoot them. So it was really cool to see this smaller setup for a sailboat. I live on land now, nowhere near saltwater, but this makes me wanna get an R.O. unit just for fun lol 😂

I know that lightning, fire, and holing the boat are the things we all fear. What steps have you taken to protect A2 from lightning? Is there any real defense? Everything on board other than your sails and engine are electrical. Sorry for putting a wet blanket on your watermaker accomplishement!

Boat projects always take me twice as long to complete and tend to cost twice as much as I think they will when I work on my sailboat. I like your attention to detail when you are working on your boat. I'm the same way about that. I get OCD about every little detail. It drives my wife nuts but stuff rarely fails or leaks when I'm finished. Thanks for the video. I'm sure your upgrades will work great for years since you did them the right way the first time. 🙂 Congrats on getting off the hard and back into the water. Fair winds and following seas. Sail On!

Don’t know anything about your water maker but I found it useful to have a t valve before the product water goes into the tank so that I can have separate water jugs for drinking water. I used bleach or hydrogen peroxide in the tank itself. Remember there is no fluoride, minerals in the drinking water. There are commercial supplements available to restore the missing minerals. Fluoride will be important for the babies teeth.
