Hey everyone! here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Dean Parks Licks From 1978. After creating/posting the recent Steely Dan-related rant video, I noticed several viewers commenting about the Dean Parks lick that was included in that lesson, which prompted me to create this Three-For-All episode featuring some of his tasty ideas - so let's dive in!
The licks/ideas shared in this episode came from a TV appearance from 1978 when Dean was working with the classic 1970s soft rock band Bread. The performance captures Dean playing his heart out on a number of songs, and there's a sample of these ideas hiding in this lesson.
These ideas include a review of the slick jazzy lick found in the recent Steely Dan rant video, along with licks that include a jazzy sweep phrase, a bluesy slip-n-slide idea, a funky bending lick, a brilliant melodic legato phrase, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of Dean Parks classic playing, a player searching for some slick jazzy sounds to add to their bag of tricks, a guitarist looking for a legendary player to scope out, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

It’s quite rare that I don’t know a guitarist, but this cool cat has been totally outside of my radar!

I like what you said, "Interesting moments hiding in songs". So very true and to me that's what makes a true musician, when you can listen to any style music and find something enjoyable or useful in it. And this spotlight shows that, because you never know who the guitarist may be behind that music. Perfect example, to name a few of my other favorite players Steve Lukathur, Tim Pierce, Neil Giraldo, etc, are a reason why you'll find great parts in some music one might not be into, and Dean Parks fits right into that mold of players.

Another great choice/video, David. Bread wrote some amazing songs with tasteful guitar work. That 1978 BBC concert is great, as is Dean's playing!

Been a good while since I’ve played ANYTHING, or stopped by to see what’s fun to watch on this channel. AND I for sure don’t know Dean Parks, and not a bread fan… just Metallica’s cover 🙄, ANYWAY, I’m truly happy to see your still making content. Please KEEP GOING!!!

As a guitar player I always tried to develop my own style, I found one day that by sliding even just a fret over mid phrase made it sound really cool and using the index finger to bend really mades it all blend together nicely. Now with this video not only do I see not only did someone else have the same ideas way before I was even born but did it in a even better way. Mr.Brewster has this ever happened to you? Where you discover a ideas and find a musician who has already explored that realm. (I knew that by no means I was discovering something new but was expanding on something I had heard before from other favorite players)

This is great! We need more of the unsung, who basically did it ALL!!! Love the woody lick! I got obsessed with session musicians and went on a downloading binge, trying to get the best sessions from leg ends like Dupree, Upchurch, Purdie, Chuck Rainey, Sanborn, Buzzy Feiten et all... MAN! The other players and artists you end up encountering is like a who's who spaghetti soup of all the other greats! The gift of music is that it never stops giving, whichever instrument. Keep these types of vids coming ... MY REQUEST! Do you know the lick from Jungle Walk by The Rascals that Buzzy Feiten used??! I don't think anyone has ever done it or tanscribed it. Its one of the baddest licks around. I love to hear - see a breakdown of that lick! Feiten has just made a Legacy Strat based on the 58 Black one he used from 72 - 80s, which he butchered! He used it on all his 70s sessions, including the Rickie Lee Jones LP. Its a serious-looking axe, with all the BF bells and whistles … Thanks for such consummate guitar insights & breakdowns!

When I was a child before solos were tabbed out much in the 70's, I learned how to sweep pick by learning that riff by ear.😂 I used to watch TV and play all sorts of jingles for commercials, the themes to The Jetsons, Scooby Doo, The Flintstones, and then as my ear got better, older themes like The Three Stooges and Popeye, etc. The older tunes tended to be more complex. Popeye was a really good one to learn.

Hey man. What's up love the last couple of lessons. Found some new players to check out because of them. Hey sometimes you reference old guitar instruction videos from the 90s, 😅 I had a few myself. A George Lynch one and a bunch of Curt Mitchell ones 😅. I recently remembered I had one called Robin Ford Blues Rhythm techniques that was awesome I saw it pop up on KZbin after watching some of your content, anyways love the channel and the content miss the 90s and the guitar instruction videos and the special effects intros in the beginning of them 😅. Oh yeah accidentals and chromatic mediants I need your help please.

Thanks for posting this Dave. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, I saw this live version of Guitar Man, and for years wondered who the guitarist was playing the wonderful licks. A few years back I learned it was Dean Parks, and since then more 'live' Bread performances have come onto yootoob, and there has been some great recent interviews with Dean, which have revealed a lot of information about the sessions he played on. It's high time Dean has had wider recognition kzbin.info/www/bejne/oofXlYyBi72Mnqssi=8P61EvYWV-POT2Tp

Great Post! Mr. Late Night has a keen ear and eye for elite players. Deans work on Clapton's Change the World elevated that tempo to a new stratosphere and the the jazzy turn around is way out of here. Thx

Woody Wood Pecker Was GREAT!!! Woody was a Troublemaker ask jerry seinfeld. Ahh Ahh Ahh. LOL. Great licks from a player with a massive Resume for sure!!! Dean looks wise back in 78 reminds me of Bill Connors. Bill was Return to Forevers 1st player before Al Di Meola.
