Uncle Funky’s reformulated Curly Magic almost a decade ago, and that formula change from a decade ago is almost exactly the same as the “new” one we have now. The owners of Uncle Funky’s were married and when they separated the company and the formula were separated as well, with one of the previous owners selling the original formula as a different product called Hello Curly Curl Stimulator, and Uncle Funky’s selling the new formula of Curly Magic. Then around 2015-ish Hello Curly disappeared and Uncle Funky’s was selling the original Curly Magic again, or so we all thought. Now I’m wondering if the formula was never changed back to the original. I started using Curly Magic in 2020 so I can’t compare it to the early 2010s formula, but it was a cult classic in the natural hair community and the formula change was big news back then.

That's definitely interesting. Thank you for sharing! I've only been wearing my hair curly since 2018, so this was a new product to me. But I'd heard a lot of people saying they really like it. It does make you wonder though if you're right. Maybe they put a new formula on the bottle, but never really changed it. It is a shame though as a few people have pointed out to me there's a concern with allergies. I'd still recommend it though. Curly Magic is a great product.

@@Linas_lovelylocks I still love the current formulation as well and I've also recommended it to people, but the company's response did make me a little concerned initially.

I first tried the second formulation and it left a nice cast and was very aloey. It gave me nice curls and felt lightweight. I recently bought it again and noticed my hair was taking longer to dry and felt more oily. I think the jojoba is really weighing my hair down since I don’t normally use oils in my hair. I really wish it acted the same because I liked the bottle I had before :( I’m going to experiment with it a bit more but overall I’m sad it doesn’t work for me anymore.

You'll have to let me know. It could definitely be the oil. Also sounds a little like moisture overload to me. Have you tried a hair reset? I'd try that, then try it again. Hopefully that will make a difference. But it would definitely be a bummer if it doesn't work for you anymore.

I used to use UFD curly magic ( the old formula) and I loved it! I have great curls using it, but I found out that I am very allergic to chamomile, which UFD is very high in, so sadly, I had t stop using it. I heard Courtney read the new ingredients and I don't like them. The second ingredient is glycerin and that does not work for my hair in the climate I live it. I live in the desert and glycerin back fires on my hair in the desert. It turns my hair to straw.

That's a shame. I know someone who's allergic to chamomile as well, so that would definitely be a turn off. I get the living in the desert thing. I moved from Phoenix, AZ two years ago and I would dry out so bad there. Glycerin can definitely affect hair the wrong way when it's dry. I'm actually struggling with this right now. I live in Colorado, which is pretty dry in the winter, and I'm starting to find the glycerin is drying me out again.

I know the formula changed. One been using UFD since 2018 and in the last few months I thought I was going crazy and my hair was ruined suddenly. I live in Maui and glycerin and protein and I aren't friends. I'm so upset they changed it, and added glycerin and gluten protein....

That's a huge bummer! Thanks for sharing with us. I'm glad you figured it out. I'm not sure what you have available to you in Hawaii, but some similar ones you might try would be the Kinky Curly Custard. That or the Camille Rose Curl Maker. I believe both are pretty similar in ingredients, but without glycerin or protein. Good luck!

I've been using UFD for a few months.. So I feel I only have experience with the newest formulation.. That being said, I'm with you and I love this product so much.. It seems to be very versatile in working for so many different curly girls.. Myself falling more so on the kinky curly spectrum.. I use this as my base coat gel topping with another Aloe based gel that has a stronger hold.. I'd been searching for years for something that really works, and this is definitely it for me.. I agree that folks should definitely give this product a shot, even if just the trial size like mentioned..

I agree with you. It's amazing how I've seen people with all hair types who love it. It's still one of my favorites. I actually haven't tried layering it with another gel yet. I'm going to have to give that a try. Thanks for the recommendation! I'm curious, do you have a go to stronger gel that you like? Most of the ones that I've tried are more light to medium hold and I'd love some recommendations for harder hold products.

@@Linas_lovelylocks My fav firm hold gel has been plain ol Wetline Xtreme, the clear formula with the Blue or Green lid.. I'd tried a ton of other gels and found the same issue, of them being just medium hold at most.. Or if it was a strong hold it gave me flakes and build up.. Wetline has been able to keep my hair from being too sticky from the UFD, strong hold that I have to scrunch out once my hair is dry/set, long lasting enough to hold until my next wash (4-5days), and no buildup on my scalp.. I have tried most of the botanical and higher end options, to always end up right back at Wetline..

I have an allergy to a certain preservative found in hair products and so I have to be careful about reading the ingredients list. When they say the "updated" the ingredients it is very disconcerting to me.

That's a very good point I wish I'd included in my video. Allergies are a big deal, so if we feel like we can't trust a company to be honest about their ingredients, people with allergies have every right to avoid using their products. It's not worth the risk of a reaction if you can't be sure.

I notice your hair looks a little shorter in that last shot with your hair from the back. There's a little more spring with your curls on that one.
@Linas_lovelylocks3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. It did seem like my hair bounced up a little more on the last wash. I wasn't sure though if that was because I microplopped a little longer 😅 I may have gotten more water out before blow drying. But the last wash was definitely my favorite.

How strong is the scent? I dont mind some scent, but some products I have tried just all I could smell was my hair. My hair is a lot like yours, so I think I would like to try it.
@Linas_lovelylocks3 жыл бұрын
I would say that the scent is about a medium level. You can definitely smell it while working with it, but once it's in your hair and your hair is dry, you can't smell it at all. I totally get that. I have a handful of products I don't use as often because I feel like I'm just enveloped by a cloud of scent. Not always my favorite thing. I would definitely recommend this product though. I absolutely loved it. Especially being a one and done styler. Makes things pretty easy.
