Today Marc presents three letters from subscribers detailing their experiences with three different Rolex A.D.'s. These viewers were trying to buy a Rolex Submariner, a Rolex Explorer II and a Rolex DateJust Wimbledon dial. And as you might expect, they had interesting experiences when each of them tried to buy their first Rolex. Remember guys, there are good A.D.'s and those are the ones who are polite, honest and forthright with you from the beginning. Those are the guys you want to deal with.

Walked into my local AD for the first time to look at an explorer. We chatted about non watch related topics for an hour or so and he took my info. A week late he called and said he was received the watch I was looking for. I feel this is not a normal timeline for this watch especially without any buying history. Glad I was one of the lucky, still not sure why.

Letter #3 Glen: As long as you like the Carl Bucherer and your wife likes the jewelry then you did a great job in leveraging your purchase history and set yourself up for opportunities to get more Rolex in the future. If you made the mistake of paying a premium to a grey dealer that premium can’t be leveraged for anything in the future, you are back to square one if you want a second Rolex

I had no prior purchase history because my former AD stopped selling Rolex and Patek. The new AD wouldn’t take a deposit because he said that if I don’t want it, someone else will. He wouldn’t even take a bribe. Rick is a really good guy and got me my watch in 3 months. We still keep in touch. He told me to stop by anytime and when I did, he made me two coffees. They’re not all the same.

I went to a rolex AD this past weekend and it had no stock. No datejusts, no cellinis, no gold pieces, nothing. They also said that didn't know when new stock would come. Crazy!

I had the same experience with an AD. They suggested I buy something else first - but what was different to this type was that they broke this down a bit more. - So for model A I’d have to get a watch serviced through them. For model E I’d have to buy X though. Sure enough I never set foot in that store.

Ian, you definitely want to branch out to other ADs. DO the legwork. I waited for my AD to get me a z-blue Milgauss for seven months. When I realized I wasn't going to get the call, I branched out to almost every out of state AD within an eight hour drive of me (ended up being six ADs in two states). Got the z-blue from one AD in six weeks, then another Rolex (Batman on jubilee) from another AD after a two month wait, and then the first AD got me another one (the Polar Exp II) after a four month wait. Got all three in second half of 2021. No other purchases and I had never even visited any of these places till mid-May of 2021. I did the legwork, but I like the hunt. I also like driving and talking watches, so it was fun.

Good comparison with the Disney speed pass. My AD wouldn’t give me a time frame I asked do you think it will be 2 more months or tl2 more years and they said they couldn’t tell me but they eventually came through with the call. Maybe they truly have no idea but who knows
@morningwaves
@morningwaves 2 жыл бұрын
The Disney SpeedPass analogy is not the best because at Disney that is the only way to speed up access whereas with watches, grey market is not the only way. If you were at Disney and they said you can buy a Speed Pass for $100 or you could spend $100 on Disney merchandise and get a free Speed Pass, the decision is easy. You are getting something tangible for the extra money you are spending just like building a purchase history with other brands at an AD. You obviously have to like the other brands to be worth it but at least you are getting something for the extra expense rather than getting ripped off by a grey dealer who is profiting from your extra expense

I think it’s unfortunate where we are in our culture that people go to these extreme lengths to buy a watch with the word Rolex on it, where there are dozens, if not more, watch brands that offer MORE watch for FAR less.

There are no waitlists at ADs. They sell to (1) big customers, (2) famous people, (3) people who will buy bundles of goods (other slow-moving watches, jewelry, etc.), and (4) gray market. At least my AD is honest. Whenever I ask for something, he simply says, "Sorry, it is reserved inventory." End of discussion. I used to love Rolex. Now I hate them.

Mark, best video yet! Love the "fast pass" analogy. Waiting and waiting for a maybe, rather than pay some more and start enjoying the watch now is why the grey market is so hot. A watch in the hand is way better than a future promise.

Given the sometimes questionable practices of AD's, as described in this video, and the egregious prices charged by the grey market, why are AD's so universally vilified while the grey market is not? Don't get it. To me we should not buy from either, and rather spend the money on more useful and honestly priced merchandise at retail. Motorcycles, for instance.

The gray market is holding the serious collector hostage with their ridiculously expensive prices. They are destroying the hobby for real horologists. Don’t feed them. In terms of Glen, he went to Bucherer which has established a large foothold in NYC when they acquired Tourneau. If you establish you’re a serious collector they do work hard on getting you the pieces you are looking for. Their jewelry is top notch and their own brand of watch is great. I own a Bucherer watch which I got for a very nice discount. Not sure if this is important to you, but through buying from them you start getting invites to private parties for various Watch brands and get to meet CEO’s, designers and occasionally owners of these companies. You meet other watch enthusiasts while enjoying an evening of cocktails and refreshments and often go home with a “swag” bag. I’m a fan of the Bucherer experience.

My AD said they weren't taking deposits because they couldn't guarantee delivery but would place an order. What I wonder - is there a hierarchy of dealers where one dealer gets more watches than another? Are you better off going to a Rolex boutique? For me, if my travels take me near an AD or boutique I'll be checking in.

If it is true that Rolex have told ADs to sell only to customers who won't flip the watch that can only be so the market saturation slows down and then Rolex themselves can reap all the rewards of selling direct from the factory into the inflated grey market. This is what I think they do anyway to some degree.
@morningwaves
@morningwaves 2 жыл бұрын
For letter #2 Joe: Rolex does not “order” watches for customers. They are allocated watches from Rolex and they don’t know what they are getting so they can never give you a firm date. Plus, even more importantly, even if they get that watch you are seeking, it is being offered to existing customers with a purchase history. They have your money already in hand, why would they not try to make more money by keeping you waiting and getting an additional sale. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER put a deposit on a Rolex at an AD. You will be waiting forever and they will be profiting off your deposit with interest from their bank instead of your bank. Any Rolex AD that takes deposits like this is not very reputable, they basically took advantage of your ignorance about the Rolex AD process.
@morningwaves
@morningwaves 2 жыл бұрын
Listen, here is the real truth: you are not getting a Rolex from an AD unless you buy other non-Rolex watches from the same AD and create a purchase history. Rolex AD’s offer all newly arrived watches to existing customers, even those that have the same watches and even those with dozens of much more expensive pieces than entry level Rolexes. The only way a first timer is getting offered any new Rolex from an AD is if all the existing VIP or “preferred” customers have already turned down a particular watch even entry level Explorers and OP’s. The list of preferred customers is long and a lot of them will buy entry level pieces to give away as gifts so you can’t assume that getting an Explorer will be any easier than getting a Daytona because you think VIP customers would already have an Explorer or be interested in more expensive pieces. Getting on some waitlist and never buying another watch tbh means you aren’t really on any waitlist. Even if you have been waiting 6 months for an Explorer and the next day some other customer walks in and buys an IWC or Cartier, guess what? That customer is going to be offered the Rolex you’ve been waiting already 6 months before you. That’s why people get frustrated when the wait is longer than what they are told. And in all honesty, most AD’s just throw away your information if you have no purchase history bec they want to sell to repeat customers/collectors and not someone who just their one Rolex. You’ll be waiting forever if you never build a non-Rolex purchase history. If you just want that one Rolex piece and are impatient, go grey market and pay more but enjoy the watch sooner. Or you can play the game and buy non-Rolex pieces and eventually get a new Rolex at retail and have other watches you enjoy rather than waste the extra money on grey dealers jacking up the premium. By playing the game you set yourself up for more pieces in the future vs going grey you pay a premium but still have no purchase history at an AD. I would recommend using the money a grey would charge over retail to establish a purchase history at an AD so you at least get a watch instead giving extra premium to a grey dealer and more importantly you get on the preferred customer list with a purchase history and give yourself chance at more Rolexes in the future.

Not true for the most part. I live in DFW, a booming metroplex with people moving here from all over the country , and got a blue DJ full steel, which is probably top 3 most preferred dial and steel combo. And I didn’t spend a single penny on anything else at the AD. I think people are just impatient and mad that they have to wait a few months to get a watch. Go enjoy whatever watch you have already and patiently wait for a call from one of your local ADs.

Quick story I got my first Rolex from my A.D. in four months it was a submariner not really what I wanted but I bought it and love it. I really wanted a Kermit and let my A.D. know this thinking it was going to be a long time because I got my submariner so fast two months later I purchased a 22 Kermit for $20,000. I have a really good relationship with my A.D. so a few days later I went and showed her my new purchase she sent Scott I have one for you it came in today I was getting ready to call you and hurry to the back room to I guess tell another lady that I already have one and won’t be needing it. So anyway I shot myself in the foot don’t ever show your cards and I still have a good relationship with my A.D. By the way I told her I would have taken that watch she smiled so I guess that was not an option or I believe we are still in good standings.

Additionally, if you ever get lucky enough to get a Rolex from an AD, don’t ever sell that watch because they will never offer you another watch again. They want their watches to go to end users and not flippers. You are wasting your time getting in waitlists with no other purchase history. I’m embarrassed by my last comment. Just received a call from my AD saying I should be getting a Pepsi shortly. This after getting me a Batgirl last year and a Hulk the year before. I was never asked to pre-buy anything. Never looked down on for being a non-millionaire. Had only bought a Sub there over a decade before. I simply stated the truth: I would rather gift my grandkids with a fine watch than a gold bar. That I can sleep (in the grave) better knowing they know that if they ever get in financial trouble, that gramps gave them a way out on their wrists. True story: my AD called me a month later for a SECOND Hulk after I told her I didn’t want to risk my families health by going out in peak pandemic (version 1,0) to pick up the first one. Seriously, my Rolex AD is not just an honest AD - she’s a good person…a very good person. Just sayin’

the ADs should be allowed to sell at market price. It actually makes sense they are the ones who have a building, employees and are trying to run a business. Why are we so concerned about giving the the profits to Internet slubs or or some guy so he can flip it? You talk a lot about greed of others but in the end your entire show is about greed.... Why else did you buy your blue OP?

Don’t like how you make the ones who write you a letter (i think you an email?) out to be gullible. And no paying for the speedpass makes the ones who own Rolex’s (you, me and millions around the world) feel good about their previous buys. It’s almost dwelling in it, the way you do it. I mostly thought your vlogs where informative and interesting. But this almost has an “come on” talking down to them. Go to the, tell them what is up, are you pulling my leg taking my money and screw me over. No more mister nice guy. Hand over the Rolex or charge then 10% interest and your money back. This attitude has to be nipped in the butt!

Maybe take off the cap and get a haircut. If you want to splurge, maybe you can shave. And you are selling Rolex?
