The checkerboard grill and flat top fenders really made the 770s I think. Then again my favorite series was the 50 series so maybe I’m biased😂. Thanks for the video, Chris

Even Oliver couldn't kill the 770. The 1550 came out in 1965 to replace the 770. They had programs to get the dealers to push the 1550, and they still kept selling the 770. It was 1957 before they finally discontinued it. Such a great machine, the ultimate refinement of the Fleetline series that had started 20 years earlier.

Tractor all sounding pretty darn good, good operator skills as well (for example u gave the engines time to warm up and get some oil pressure) also you let us actually see and hear the whole tractor rather than a hood and muffler shot only,plus no goofy music playing thru the whole video like some other sites,thanks bro

Those Olivers start right up almost every time. I have a Super 88 sitting for a couple years and that fired right up too. Raked some hay then changed the oil. From now on I will use it a little more regularly.

When we restored it we just gave the engine a tune up, so I don't know what is inside, but it sure is a powerhouse for what is supposed to be 155 cubic inches.

We run an IH 460 on a MX100-70 with wet corn. (pretty close to the 770 HP wise) cleans the carbon out of her. Thats about the only real work she gets each fall. That's the tractor I learned to plow with.

The 880 is becoming one of my favorites. They have a good amount of power without being large and clumsy. I need to use mine for more stuff now. I like the hydrostatic steering conversion on the one I have. It drives effortlessly.

Nice use of the 4 3-digit tractors. I was surprised how that 770 started up so easy after not running for a couple years. My new (to me) 770 has been at my friend Joe's the last couple of weeks, and he's going over it, which is something I have him do with all my new Oliver purchases. Chris when I was a kid dad had two 770's and one super 77. One of the 770 looks similar to the one you got other than the seat was the plush seat. I do know the checkerboard grill on the front was cast iron. I'm guessing from what I've seen on videos that the cast-iron checkerboard grill was pretty rare so I'm guessing dad bought that right at the tail end of the manufacturing of the 770s. I have climbed up the grill more than once so, I can look in the radiator when I was a kid before using the tractor. The other 770 had the grill like your 880 the same type of round fenders. Dad did go to Minnesota to get a cab to put on that particular tractor. Thanks Michael

I don't want to be a naysayer, but they never had a cast grille for the 770. It was the bar type like the 880 up until 1964, then it was the fiberglass checkerboard from 64 until the end of the 770s in 67.

Chris you forgot another three-digit tractor!!! Number wise it's smaller than the 660 but it should have the same horsepower!!!! "550" That tractor fools a lot of people!!! We used the 3 bottom plow on ours!!!! Also used a 6-foot bush-hog, Run about eighteen to nineteen hundred RPMs with the bush-hog!!!!

No, LP was not common in my area. I've seen a couple of farmer conversions, but if it was factory it had to wander in from out west. I like the idea of the fuel never going bad, but I know of guys that don't like them because if they get a fuel leak in an enclosed building.... Booom!

Chris, I noticed on the 770 there are no side panels on the engine compartment. Looking at pictures online it would appear the Super 77 was open also unlike the original 77. Do you know if the engine side panels on the original 77s were for cosmetic purposes only? Did the y cause overheating? I see the Super 77 and 770 had a slightly bigger engine so maybe they were worried about overheating with the 3.5 liter engine?

A lot of farmers would take the side panels off their 77 (or 66, 88). Some said they would help them run cooler, many just wanted them easier to service. The first or second oil change they came off and never went back on. They came out with the open side panels for the Supers and they stayed on. You could check the oil without having to open a pamel. So yea, the louvered side panels on a Fleetline 77 were cosmetic.

Dad added some 50 series steps on the front frame. It just took a couple of extra holes in the steps to get them to mount. .

There's lots of sources. Maibach Tractor is a good one. Smitty's In Dalton, Ohio. Lagesse Tractors in Bloomer Wisconsin. The Tractor Doctor in Mondovi Wisconsin, Larry Svehlak in Texas, I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Going to shows that feature Oliver is a great place to find parts, I find them on ebay, and there's a Free Oliver and White Auction page on Facebook that has quite a few good parts show up on it. Korves Oliver is mostly new parts, but they do have used parts like engine blocks and heads. Welter's Farm Supply is another one I have gotten parts from. Another great resource is the Hart-Parr Oliver Collector Magazine. Many of these places advertise in there, as well as others. The magazine comes with membership in the club. They seemed to make quite a few in 64. This one had been parked outside for 5 years and a customer brought it in to get it running before his auction. Dad made him an offer as is, and bought it. The inside of the engine was so cruddy from sitting out! Our mechanic tore it down, cleaned the parts and put it back together with new gaskets and she spins like a top.

The 770 doesn't have enough hydraulic umph. You have to get a 4 digit Oliver to have enough pressure to lift this one. It's a dji mini pro3. Easy to fly, and it's survived every crash I've put it through. There's a bill in Congress to ban the DJI because of it being a Chinese company, so they might not be available much longer in the USA. Old ones will still be able to fly last I knew.

@@lorenblount9602 I use my skid steer to get it up to the bin. It has plenty of hydraulic pressure, and I torched a hole in the end of the pallet forks to hook it up with. I can get it right over the hole just by twisting the skid steer to adjust the side to side. Set the jack, unhook and it's all ready for one of the Olivers to take over.

A nice 550 seems to go for around $6k. Sometimes they get higher depending on options such as power steering or remote hydraulics.

Why did Oliver use the General Motors 3-cylinder 3-71 instead of bigger straight 6 cylinder gas/ diesel engine?

They felt they weren't going to sell enough tractors to justify designing a bigger engine at the time. The other factor was some of Oliver's upper management had come from General Motors, so when it came time to outsource components, that's where their loyalties layed. They also used Allison torque converters, Saginaw steering units, and Delco ignition parts.

The old girls all sound good. Do you like the diesel extreme? I've always run power service cetane booster but I've been looking for something a little bit better with the diesel equipment that sits. I try and start everything at least once a month if I get to it, but it seems like even when I buy the best fuel that I can it just doesn't Seem to stay good. This low sulfur crap isn't helping the situation much either. The 1800 if that thing sits for more than a month, it will actually run extremely sluggish for the first hour or so and I try and keep fresh fuel in it best I can. I know that pump needs gone through however

I just started using it last year per the recommendation of a viewer. My Duramax is getting a bit of a fog to the exhaust at an idle, fuel shop said time for injectors. I put some Fuel Extreme in before leaving for the Mackinac bridge crossing last fall. When we got up there I noticed the fog was all but gone. I put some in the combine and it seemed to help with cold starts too. I've had good luck with Seafoam in the diesels too, but it didn't seem to make a difference on the Duramax where the Diesel Extreme did.

Woods bought out Du-all. A dealer that handles Woods should be able to get you what you need. Another option is to take it to a good hydraulic shop. They can tear it apart and measure the seals to find replacements.

@@Prariedog I did some searching and Du-al isn't supplying that kit any more. Baum Hydraulics does show a kit that covers several Du-all models, including the 320. You can get the serial number off the engine and have the Floyd County Museum look it up that way. It costs a little extra, and if it's not the original engine it's not going to work. The number is either just above the right rear engine mount bolt, or above the right front engine mount bolt where the casting comes out for the cam gear.

@@Olivermansuper66 the 60 has a tag on the block between the carb and air cleaner. If that's missing, there's no other way to identify the exact year. There are casting dates in parts like the rear end that will give a close age.

@@Olivermansuper66 , to the best of my knowledge, the museum doesn't have any build info for the 60. They should be able to tell you the year, but they don't have much for the tractors built prior to the Super series.

If White Motor Co. had not bought and gutted Oliver for cash, Oliver would still be a leader in technology, power, and sales. Too bad Oliver did not offer a 1090 or even 1190 that would have put the other brands on notice that they were short on power. Oliver had a higher base weight right off the semi delivering them to the dealer. Other brands had to add quite a bit of weight to even equal Olivers. One brand, I will leave nameless put their fuel tank at the very front of the tractor. They pulled a plow good at the start of the day but as the fuel was used the front end got light and traction control became less able to use the pound/feet of front weight balance to maximize rear traction. Maybe we would be looking at an Oliver 1167 Vario 2 track, instead of Fendt or Massey Ferguson

I think Oliver's biggest mistake was not putting more effort into expanding their dealer network. Everything else was there. As long as they limited that, sales were limited, leaving them a small fish in a big pond. If it wasn't White, it would have eventually been some other company swallowing them up. The management of the 50s (Alva Phelps in particular) was ready to retire and had little interest in how to transition Oliver to the nest generation, and were more interested in their retirement packages.

@@ThatOliverGuyChris By the 60s most tractor manufacturers were set on the idea of spacing dealerships. Maybe not by actually making them close their doors but by requiring them to build a corporate-designed storefront which the small dealerships did not have the large customer base to be able to spend several thousand to remake the front of their buildings or to actually build a new building to meet the corporate required image. An example was IH with their monolith design built into the front of the building. Probably the real thing was stocking. If you had dealers 20 miles apart the number of tractors required to stock all of them would mean a glut of the previous models when a new model series came out. Automotive dealerships were also squeezed out in favor of farther-spaced sales points. For example, we had 3 Ford dealers within a 15-mile drive from us. Now it is a 60-mile drive to one.

@@bigun447 I'm talking about dealers in areas not serviced at all. There was a time there was an Oliver dealer every 20 miles in my area. But when you get into the southern states, the western areas, basically outside the Midwest, then there was poor representation. I can't recall how many people I've talked to that switched colors when their local Oliver dealer closed because the next one was 100 or more miles away.
