Thanks for the training. As a southpaw I have attempted this and have never been good at it. As a matter of fact, last time I was sparring I ruptured my bicep tendon throwing a lead hook that missed and it has been 4 months of surgery and recovery. I am finally back at it full swing but realized I need to work on this lead hook. Honestly, I don't think it will ever be a strong part of my arsenal, but I hope so. At least you gave me something to go on.

What about the fist position regarding the range? The point is, the vertical position of the fist at a long range causes that we hit not with the fist's ankles but with our fingers. This can be very painful or even lead to injury. Therefore, in case of a a punch in a long range, the fist should be twisted. For a medium range punch - about 45 degrees (inside twist) and for a long range even 270 degrees. This increases the strength of the blow and adjusts the position of the whole hand to the anatomical structure of the human being, allowing the impact to occur with the ankles of the fist and not with fingers. Of course, gloves protect the hand, but without them fingers would be broken immediately if there was a strong punch.

My right hook is by far my best punch and I can generate a lot of power with it but my lead hook is absolute garbage - which sucks because the left hook is a much more useful punch. It's so bad that I feel like I can jab harder than I can lead hook, which really doesn't seem right. I even started to include more southpaw rounds in my training in case I need a powerful lead hook at my disposal. I hope it's simply a matter of putting in more reps and I'm glad you made a video on the subject. I'll try doubling and trippling up on my hooks during shadowboxing and heavy bag rounds.

Try fighting southpaw. Your straight left might be better than your right hand too
@Lynx33PL6 жыл бұрын
I don't think I can make southpaw work as my default fighting stance. My lead hook improves by leaps and bounds when I switch but my jab gets significantly worse. My jab in orthodox stance is much better and I think I'd rather settle for poor lead hook and solid jab than swap it for good lead hook and poor jab. Still, I try to train my southpaw stance on regular basis because I can imagine situations where good lead hook might be more important than good jab.
@Bumiround4 жыл бұрын
Same. 2 years passed, u have new tips to improve left hook?
@Lynx33PL4 жыл бұрын
@@Bumiround My lead hook did improve a lot but I don't have any magic answers. I think what helped the most, was doubling and tripling up on hooks like it was recommended in the video, in combinations with training power hooks to the body. The first drill felt awful for the longest time because my hooks to the head used to be limp and underwhelming but they finally clicked. I've mentioned drilling the power hooks to the body because eventually, I did find it easier to translate the mechanics of a punch to my regular hooks. The main issue with the hooks was that they felt awkward (doing hundreds upon hundreds of reps fixed that) and they lacked power (which was easier to develop training body shots). Hope that helps.

I have a 15 pound aqua bag that is about the size of a large head. Hanging from a bungee cord it provides a lot of different motions and distances, as opposed to a heavy bag. I find this to be perfect for training hooks and uppercuts as the bag swings wildly in unpredictable ways -- up and down, side to side, close and far away. Bang away.

Wearing a long sleeve polo shirt helps to relax the punch into impact too because it holds shoulder and elbow in formation. I liked throwing the hook in the ocean as well it gives you minimal resistance that you can use accelerate into. But having you define it this way makes it understandable on what is needed for the shot.

Very important question: Is keeping the shoulder low really good thing? My trainer always tells me to bring up my shoulder while throwing punches to be covered by the shoulder if I miss. The second thing: as I see, You keep the elbow quite low (not parrallel to the ground). Doesnt it make the hook weaker? Im rather eastern european style boxer, but I like Your vids and want to know more about your technique.
@therandomwizard1886 жыл бұрын
hbsh its slightly a different technique. But im a boxer too, and ive been taught by many coaches. And the best and correct technique is the one you're describing, keeping the elbow up is crucial for power since its a more solid punch and you could pucnh through your target.

@chucknorris2026 жыл бұрын
I wont ever say I "mastered" the left hook - who has? certainly not me - but I got proficient with the left hook by basically doing what you said, though this took me about 1 year(where I was focusing on the left hook in my shadow boxing...among all my other punches, AND my roundhouses/kicks, and my knees, and so on, since I do muay thai) to get decent with it, to the point where my coach always says to me and to others(esp to those I spar) that I have a good left hook. To me its all about the rotation and that year I spent focusing on it ingrained the technique o the hook so I can do it in sparring with perfect technique. Though I mostly throw long and medium range hooks. Dont really get much of a chance to use my short range hook, but I do have a decent one - its just that sometimes knees are preferable to hooks at that range. Its a good opening shot though, before you or they initiate the clinch(to begin the knees). I would like to get good with my right hook. I know the principle of it because of the left hook and my other training and I land it, just not as often, and not as clean.
@MrCharlietoma6 жыл бұрын
is it wrong to raise your shoulder to protect ur chin when u throw the hook?
@PrecisionBoxing6 жыл бұрын
It's not wrong, your hook will just be weaker. It's ok if you intentionally sacrifice power for coverage. But it's better to bring your shoulder in front of your chin and tuck your chin behind it.
