Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Eric Johnson Licks From 1975.
I'm sure some of you might be scratching your head at the date attached to this lesson, but it's correct - Eric is captured in this episode playing with his old rock-fusion group the Electromagnets during a TV appearance in the Austin, TX area in 1975. The performance.interview special gives a rare early look at the inspiring music that was already emanating from Eric when he was only around 20 years old and already playing with a fiery level of authority and conviction.
This lesson features a number of unique and inspiring ideas, and really showcases some of Eric's common musical ideas and phrases in this rare early look at his playing style. The ideas shared here include a rapid-fire pentatonic run (which has become one of his trademarks), to a jazzy phrase, a mix-and-match arpeggio idea, and much more.
It was fun putting this lesson together and I hope this satisfies some of the requests for an Eric Johnson lick-focused lesson, as I did create a Chordplay based around his massive chord vocabulary last year - so check that lesson out if you haven't already.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Mr. Brewster after I discovered his channel is helping me a lot, thank you very much, the idea of each guitarist at one stage of his life is fantastic, I found his channel through this EJ video, and I am a big fan of him and make me yours too, others times like live austim in 1984, 1988 or G3 1997 would be incredible.

I was first introduced to Eric Johnson from the first Clapton Crossroads Festival. I became an instant fan. His lead lines are insane. I wasn't aware he started so young and before watching your video, I had no idea who the Electromagnets were. I watched the video you referred to and all I can say is "EXTREME GUITARGASM"!!!

Great lesson as always. Saw Eric about 1 1/2 months ago, he was stellar. Saw the Ah Via Musicom tour as well, it was a religious experience. The first video he put out (maybe it was through REH?) is really, really good. I've stolen good ideas from it. His Seven Worlds release is worth checking out. Despite the production the songwriting and playing are really good.

I first heard of Eric Johnson when I checked the liner notes to see who played the guitar on "Minstrel Gigolo" from Christopher Cross' first album so Eric was doing studio work in '79. I already knew he was gifted! Also enjoyed Larry Carlton's work on that album and between that, Steely Dan, and his solo work I've been a fan of his ever since as well. Great video thank.

EJs Electromagnet period is really amazing when put in context with how young Johnson was at the time. I believe the other band members were considerably older than EJ. So this isn’t really blazing fusion and worth seeking their CDs out for ! I saw EJ once on the Ah Via tour then sort of lost tracking him playing live for years, but got to see him 3x in 2018-19, he was truly stellar every single time !!!

Another great video, David. I had that HotLicks Total Guitar video on VHS and was just not at a level where I could take a lot away other than some directions to go in, and to see Eric's huge breadth of understanding and appreciation of the instrument. That's cool there's a larger book available. The one that came with the VHS tape was pretty small. (And, that's definitely EJ. But, man, not just the Les Paul, but is that an orange shag carpet they're playing on? Must have been the mid-1970s, too!)

Great stuff! Eric’s Electromagnets period doesn’t seem to be well known and that’s a real shame. It’s some of my favorite playing of his, in a fusion context. Years ago the self titled Electromagnets and Electromagnets II CDs were available, might still be. Musts first every EJ fan.

Electromagnets were unbelievable. Saw them in a club in Dallas in 1975 and again in the basement of the NTSU (now UNT) student union in fall of 75 or spring of 76. Basically sounded like Mahavishnu Orchestra at the time... and, yes, this is the same Eric Johnson.

Mariani is the correct spelling of the name. the trio band was named after drummer Vince Mariani, with Kyle Brock on bass, playing Fusion type music, wherein Eric Johnson played guitar. Another big fusion music band on the scene then was 47 X Their Own Weight with guitarist Fred Walters. Their name being a play on the Tums Antacid TV commercials theme that Tums absorbed that amount in stomach acid, which constantly aired on TV for years and years. We used to see them both doing double billed shows frequently. All were exceptional players and equally talented in my opinion.
