Navy, burgundy, dark green, gray, and darker purple Grenadines. Burnt orange, mid blue ancient madder. Dark brown and darker gray wool or repeating pattern ties. Shantung, cashmere, knit and some nice silk ties that aren't satin finish and have some type of texture and potentially classic pattern or micro-pattern.

I've seen all the men's fashion advice videos and all have merit in one way or another. Most men who have created a personal style think they are irreproachable. To think otherwise would admit to making mistakes. Who wants to admit that? But you have opened my eyes to how incorrect wearing tan shoes looks with a dark suit. But what I like most about you is your subtle sense of humor which gently shows your disgust at certain fashion trends and how foolish we are to accept them. I often burst out laughing. Keep on - you light up my life!

What’s up, Andrew? You’re far too kind, thank you so much for this comment. You’re so right as the hardest part about establishing a timeless style is admitting to oneself that the way you’ve been doing it for so long may not actually be the best. It took me years to come to that conclusion cause I used to get so many compliments, I thought I was the one..LOL. But once you realize it, it gets a lot easier. I knew I was going to get some push backs regarding my thoughts about dark suits and light brown shoes and I have but as long as I can reach just a few guys, I’m happy. And from the comments, it seems like I have.

You're the first guy to call out the shirt/tie matching trend. So many guys do that, in fact the salesmen in the stores advise people to buy ties that match colors with the shirt. It makes you look amateur but guys who do it think they know what they're doing. You're 100% right, guys who know a little about menswear and then do stupid stuff like that are actually worse than the guys who don't know anything about menswear. Because those amateur tight-suited guys then spread the misinformation and regular people think they are the ones to take advice from.

a bordo/burgundy tie is a must. a putriv red, as well. make sure its silk (or high quality polyester ot cotton if you cant find one... which never happens) a black tie, maybe knit one. then a tie with stripes, and one with jacquard motifs, knit not printed. this is basic... make sure all tie are wide enough (the slimmest is 7/8cm at the end)

Hello Vladimir, thanks for another very informative video I agree on your choices grenadine ties are a good place to start any tie collection , plain colours black ,blue, burgundy and silver are in my collection and then patterned and striped for a basic start up collection for any guy. I myself am not to keen on striped ties but its always handy to have a couple . I personally love silk knit ties and have them in most colours and I tend to wear them more than any other despite the idea that they are seen as a more casual tie.i would like to ask what you feel about them .Anyway cheers young man and may you and your family have a great easter.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam, Happy Easter to you and yours. You have your Grenadines all covered, some nice choices. I don’t have any knit ties in my collection anymore, I had a couple but wasn’t reaching for them as much so I gave them away. They are more on the casual side as you say but absolutely nothing wrong with them. I guess I like my ties a little beefier and most knits usually come around 3” wide max, I like them around 3.5”. But it’s just my preference, I’m sure you still look sharp. Cheers!

Good, solid advice. I would say that like you, foulard ties are the backbone of my tie wardrobe, followed by stripes, paisleys and solid. Obviously you are not a fan of paisley ties, but I find that like the foulard, the paisley has a lot of colors in the tie to work with, and is a slightly more sporty type tie than a foulard. Another point I would make about ties is, it can pull a look together or ruin a look. And while color is important, so is pattern. A simple, solid tie might be just the thing to pull together an outfit where the shirt or suit has a bold pattern. Similarly, a bold paisley tie might liven up an otherwise boring solid suit and shirt combo. So, if I had to do just 10 ties, I would probably go with 5 foulards, in a variety of dominant colors. 2 striped ties. 2 paisley ties. One one solid, either blue or burgundy. And if I would pick an 11th tie, maybe go with some kind of plaid tie, though I admit, those can be tricky and it is easier to go wrong with those..
@v_r_
@v_r_ 5 жыл бұрын
What’s up, Martin? Your comment is well appreciated and I agree with your points on how important ties are to an outfit. As far as Paisley, I don’t own one currently but there’s one that I’ve seen from Cappelli that’s on my list. Thanks for watching and engaging!

Very informative and interesting engaging presentation with Ties. Ones personal style is ever constantly evolving as you continue to learn and see new things. I never knew the pattern ties were called Fuller Ties. I just called personally always called them pattern ties because nothing, nowhere, nobody else ever said what their correct name were for those kinda ties. But they are my preference style wise for different reasons. I’ve never bought or worn a plain solid tie as it’s never been appealing to me or has it ever been my personal style choice. I’m accepting though of the fact and it does seem obvious to me that what’s referred to as Grenadine Ties seems more casual and fills a need in making the dress style a bit more casual in appearance. And it’s something I may consider for some occasions. All things otherwise, a regular plain tie is a non starter for me and that’s just my personal styling and what I enjoy.

Good video as usual, Vlad. At 1:50: "these are the kind of ties to avoid". The picture is of a bunch of printed ties, some of which (especially bottom row) happen to be very ugly; others are just non-descript and moderately unattractive, though not ugly IMO. But I don't see these as a "kind" of tie, just a collection of bad ones. Many printed ties are quite beautiful. I own a bunch. But of course you have to be selective and avoid stinkers such as the ones you pictured. Also, as a general note, I think the tie is the one place where you can let your personality shine through a bit more, with somewhat-brighter color and novel pattern. Very conservative ties (such as the ones you prefer) are OK, but just OK, to my eyes, not stunning, not head-turners. I say this understanding that the difference can be thin between stunning, on the one hand, and clownish or garish or over-the-top, so one must discern carefully. Cheers, and keep up the good work! Alan

Press) 10) Yellow paisley bow tie (J. Press) But that's just me. I lean more toward Ivy style, and love me some striped ties!

I think one could do with just four solid / subtle pattern ties: 1) slate blue, 2) burgundy, 3) sand, 4) black. I'm not saying a man shouldn't have more options but these can cover pretty much every situation life can throw at you. No need to have a hundred of them. I would rather rotate a couple of quality ones. Even if they can be on the expensive side it doesn't matter because they can last many years. Keep up the good work.

I've got a few. While I like wide lapels I am getting back to work and I have bought 4 new suits and 4 jacket/blazers, which are all slim Line with narrow lapels and I think striped narrow ties just don't fit in. But narrow banded ties have a strong look in the small coat opening. Anyway I am dressing down so that I don't look out of place when nearly everyone that I work with, or meet at a client site is half my age. But because the clothes don't dominate the room, I fit in. But the occasional wearing of a horizontal stripe tie does lift my new wardrobe of boring narrow style suits and jackets. Well I think so. Phil.

Great channel! As usual, your advice is spot on. I will incorporate many of your ideas in my wardrobe. But one critical piece of information you forgot to mention was the tie length. IMHO, the tie should fall right at the waistline of the pants...just touching the bottom of your belt buckle. If you buy a tie that too short, you might tie a knot (half Windsor or full) that will have the tie falling at or above the belly button...which looks weird when the suit jacket is unbuttoned. I think that tie length should factor into the decision-making. Personally, I think a half-Windsor is perfect for spread-collar and four-in-hand is ideal for straight down or button-collared shirts. You did a video on tie-width...but I don't know if you did one on the tie length. Just a thought...not a criticism...

Peace Vladmir I'm a new subscriber I love your videos I've learned allot. Can you tell me where you get your ties from?
@v_r_
@v_r_ 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Shaun, I’m glad that you’ve found the videos useful and thanks for subscribing. I get my ties from a few different places such as Shibumi, EG Cappelli, Berg & Berg and Chipp Neckwear (grenadines) just to name a few. Let me know if there’s a specific tie(s) you’re inquiring about and I can tell you where I got it.

@@v_r_ Peace King thanks for getting back to me. Where can I get some good foulard ties? Also the information on suits from that company was priceless. I been trying to figure out who to go with and then I saw your videos. God sent!!

No doubt, bro! Shibumi have some great ties and the delivery is super fast. But all the names that I listed above are all good. H.N. White is another good option. Let me know how you make out.

Great advice. I noticed that you did not mention paisley ties. Is there a reason why you prefer other tie patterns over the paisley pattern?
@v_r_
@v_r_ 4 жыл бұрын
No reason really, just taste I guess. But there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Paisley.

@@v_r_ Good answer. I have over fifty ties and approximately twenty of them are paisley ties. I like the way some paisley ties are woven so there is texture on the tie. In addition, I like the way I can pull a third color from the tie and match that color with my pocket square. The rest of my ties are like the third tie you recommended. I like the patterns and again, they are great for pairing your pocket square. By the way, that was a great pocket square you were wearing in this video. Keep up the good work.

@@v_r_ It was my first tie because for some time the only proper shoes that I had were a pair of brown/burgundy monk straps. It was bad choice for a first tie but it was the one that could look really nice with my charcoal suit and the shoes that I had. My wardrobe have grown quite a bit since then. BTW, nice job with your channel! I am watching most of your videos atm.

What's up, Juan? My apologies for the late reply. Personally, I'd say Fina as they're a little bit dressier but i don't think there's a wrong answer.

This one is a MTM suit and I usually go for 4”. I’d say 3.25” to 3.50” is probably more classic where it’s not too wide and not too skinny. But personally, I like mine a little bigger.

As much as I learn from and enjoy your videos, I always wince a bit when you put down people who don't know any better how to dress themselves. Men don't often get trained in color and matching colors well in the U.S. That's one reason why a man might just choose the easy matching. As you say, you probably made the same mistakes yourself. A bit more charity, please.

I don’t feel like I do that at all. I’m always the first to say and provide examples of when I used to do the same thing. I wish someone would’ve told me back then instead of telling me that I looked sharp, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. Maybe you need to watch more of my videos.
