What are some of your bad Menswear habits?
@steveh2027

Dirty shoes and clothes that are not ironed. These things cost you nothing more than a little time and guys just don't seem to understand how important it is and how much it kills your style.

Vladimir Riché I’ll admit I bought too many ties. Some were not necessarily ugly, but cheap. I’m now buying higher quality ties and replacing the cheap ones. As they say, buy cheap buy twice. My goal is to own a few high quality ties that can go with many outfits. Charles Tyrwhitt had some grenadine ties on sale a few days ago and I let the sale go by. I’m sure the sale will come back with all that’s going on.

May I suggest something regarding the shoe trees? I advise raw wooden shoe trees, I mean without any paint or varnish. Preferably cedar. Raw cedar shoe trees absorb moisture and sweat and odour way better. As you can see, I subscribed, so no one will think I'm a hater. Peace. 😉✌🏿

What’s good, Beejay? I do agree that raw shoe trees are generally better at wicking moisture.

You were bang on with your tie removal example. Many years ago I learned the hard way when I took my Armani tie off by pulling without reversing the process... Own barber? Yep, same one for the past 40 years. Me. It's not a cheap thing. My haircut and shave I find I do best. Takes time, but it's also relaxing. I do need to look into a tailor.... 🤔. Like those trees, butt they don't come in 13UK! I don't play with my shoes. Box full of shoe care products. Shoes are my thing. The range you mentioned for shoes is where I roam now. Totally agree about the quality thing. Of course, stay in your range.

Great points Vlad. As I’m getting into classic menswear, I had bought some Allen Edmonds and was going to cheap out on the care products by getting Kiwi. I decided to buy just a brush and black shoe cream by Saphir and Build from there. Got some J Fitzpatrick’s coming in whenever we get over this world madness so nice shoes are addicting.

Another spot on video bro, I agree with quality over quantity. In fact, many times we only wear a limited pair of shoes anyway. Also, BIG UP Dad! On the tailor part, I have a good one now and have been working with him to provide me better quality in his work. Doing my best to keep the money circulating...know what I mean?!!! It was because of the first video I saw of yours that got me thinking about having a tailor is as important as having a good attorney, accountant and barber. Until the next one....

The dress shirts are tough. I like a wide neck because a tight neck buttoned all day irritates my skin. But the wide neck correlated to a wide/baggy body and deep arm holes. I’m looking into custom options, but shirts have limited shelf life in my situation (no dry cleaner available, so need to machine wash)

I agree. I start with my shoes. I also shine my shoes, after I wear them, before I put them away. That way, I know my shoes are always on point. One of the biggest fashion faux pas is, having a great outfit, and dirty or scuffed shoes. Ruins your whole look. I think I would add, failing to put your outfit together in advance. Both me and my wife, do this on Sundays, when we have time to press our clothes, notice and fix loose buttons etc., before the work week. There are several advantages to this, such as avoiding redundancy, because we tend to default to particular outfits, when we are pressed for time. We have busy careers, and knowing that we have our wardrobes figured out beforehand, is just one less thing on our plates. It saves valuable time. And knowing that I am prepared, puts my mind at ease. Now, I am not saying do the entire week like we do, but at least preparing the night before, helps. If you have time for social media, you certainly have time to get yourself prepared for the work day.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 4 жыл бұрын
What’s up, Dave? I agree completely on how dirty shoes can destroy a look. Selecting your outfits beforehand is a great idea also. I don’t typically do this although most of the time, I have an idea what shoes I want to wear the next day. Then I build the outfit from there. But that’s definitely something I can see myself doing in the future. Thanks for watching!

I agree with you about having one shoe tree per shoe. I do! I still wear belts with my suits. I only own two suits atm. One custom suit from Daniel George and an off-the-rack from Spier and Mackay. When I was being measured for my custom suit, I was told that I shouldn't wear a belt with my suit. I ignored their advice because I like to match my belt with my shoes. I still like the look and I'm not sure I would consider it a bad menswear habit. I'm 50/50 but I wish I had one suit with side tabs. I don't wear suits often so it isn't a big deal. Which style do you prefer? I have a hunch you are a belt-less guy.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 4 жыл бұрын
What’s up, bro? You would be correct, I’m definitely a side-tab and braces guy. It’s one less thing I have to worry about in the morning as far as matching my belt to my shoes. But let me be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing belts and if matching them with your shoes is your thing then I love it.

Great video. Good advice. Regarding cufflinks however according to Alan Flusser in "Dressing the man" his book on classic men's wear. He says that when wearing a double breasted suit one should wear a french cuff shirt with cufflinks. This is due to the formalness of the db suit. Other than this point the video was on point. Keep up the great work.

Vladimir Riché The pleasure is all mine, Vladimir. I look forward to your videos in great anticipation and today was a great day in that respect :) I’d like to see the shoes you would want to buy (makers or styles you don’t currently have in your closet) and why. Your videos on top 5 shoes among different budget ranges were really educational and as I’ve said before, you introduced me, and I dare say a few more gentlefolk on this channel, to SoH - which was a real eye opener. If you have your eyes on other such low profile makers, it would be lovely to see you bring some attention to them as well. And since we are all looking to fill gaps in our wardrobes, it be great to see what shoe gaps you are aspiring to fill and why. Your styling choices have been immaculate (though for me in some cases geographically out of bounds) and I would love to follow you on your styling journey.

Hey, love the channel. One thing about the shoe trees, don’t you think the unfinished, cedar wood type is better because it wicks away the sweat and helps dry the inside of the shoe after wearing all day.. also I like when they have hole or venting up the middle for same reason. I definitely prefer when the trees are nice chunky and fully fill the vamp and heel areas and so they keep their shape. Also, the double spring mechanism on the tree is much sturdier/ better. Thanks!!

Hey Vladimir. Good advice, even though I don't always follow it myself. I am slowly getting more shoetrees, though nowhere near having shoe trees for all my good shoes. Agree about having a regular tailor. It really is money well spent as a good tailor can make even modestly priced clothes look decent. Watches vs. shoes is an interesting one. There are watch guys who wear cheap khakis or jeans and hoodies. Ideally, your wardrobe should be in balance. Quality vs. quantity. Yes, indeed. But sometimes, you need to go up the quality ladder to figure out the sweet spot in terms of price vs. quality. And that takes some time to figure out.

One of your better videos. You are getting a good rhythm, keep it up. I appreciate the honesty and “realness”. So many people try to be all things to all people and avoid offending. Keep speaking your opinion, it makes your videos legitimate. Btw would be interested in your opinion if you have one on Antonio Meccariello shoes. A bit more expensive than brands you have talked about but I think they are fantastic.

Insightful video. I'm in the process of evolution. I've been watching videos here on KZbin discussing a more higher standard of men's fashion. Kirby Allison is the one who really changed everything for me, I'm pretty sure my watching so many of his videos is the reason why your videos appeared in my feed. The Elegant Oxford is another channel that really opened my eyes to more than simply style (particularly when it comes to shoes), I learned about tradition and real value- from a channel that teaches you how to shine your shoes. I'm on my way in a new direction. This week I received my first two pairs of shoe trees thanks to the OG Jeff. I dont know if you dig em but I also copped a pair of Shirt Stays this week too. I'm waiting on two pairs of cap toe Oxford that I ordered from Nordstrom's Rank- Aldo, and yes, I know Aldo is a sub par brand but I'm working my way up to the really quality brands- during these turbulent times a brother can't throw to many C-notes at shoes right now, I got two pairs of Oxford cap toes for less than $100- a black pair and a brown pair. Right now I'm only going for a certain look which I like to call 45 (my age). I'm a small business owner (painter) and I'm a custodian at my neighborhood mosque so dressing up is not totally an investment for me, honestly its more of a hobby. I'm working my way up to a better style but I don't think I'll ever spend more than $300 for a pair of shoes. I would never spend $100 on one neck tie, no disrespect meant but i just have a different set of priorities when it comes to how I look at money. I want to look nice but I understand some of these clothing items are investments. Most dudes I know would never buy a shoe knowing that one day he could have the sole replaced, thats just not how the average hood dude think of shoes, but I do, thanks to brothers like you. So thanks for another great video and congratulations on all the success you're enjoying.
@v_r_
@v_r_ 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for this comment! And there’s no shame in not wanting to drop more than $300 on shoes or $100 on a tie, that’s being responsible, if you ask me. Maybe it’s not obvious because on KZbin, you don’t really get to see the growth but the final product. But at one point, I couldn’t imagine buying some of these things either. And not really because I thought it was too much to spend on articles of clothing but more that I didn’t care about tailored clothing and dress shoes to ever do that. So I know exactly where you’re coming from and the good thing is, you don’t have to spend that much to look fly and hopefully you can see that from some of the brands that I champion on here. I’m looking forward to seeing you again in the comments section.

And the Taylor stole my blue blazearth and replaced it with a hand made blazer that it looked like he made himself. One sleep was longer than the other. It didn't weigh the same. A lot of times it can look cheesy and tryhardy. 3. Having too much stacking on the shoes. 4. Wearing skinny suit trousers. 5. Buying several suits of a single type. Thats a nono. Diversify.

@v_r_
@v_r_ 4 жыл бұрын
Really? I’m surprised that it’s your first time hearing that but let me try to explain. Shoes are the foundation that every great wardrobe is built upon, it’s like building a house. You always start with the foundation and go from there, Menswear is no different. You can wear the most expensive suit in the world but if your shoes are trash, the whole outfit is trash. Shoes are the first thing that other stylish men notice but more importantly, shoes are the first thing that women notice. Once you start wearing nice shoes, it just changes everything. You start to walk different, you feel more confident and it shows. Then everything else in your wardrobe just falls into place after that. That’s why you hardly ever see a man with nice shoes but the rest of his outfit looks like crap. They’re out there but very rare. I can say a lot more but I’ll stop here.
