About this video:3 Feet or 3 Miles | Moving beehives to a new location
In today's video we will be consolidating a couple of 8 frame beehives into 10 frame boxes and moving them to the Bee Cast;e bee yard. It's turns out to be more work than I planed but in the end it has to be done.
The wife's KZbin Channel:
• Which is BETTER? A BE...
About this Channel:
I hope you enjoy beekeeping and this video. If you are interested in becoming a beekeeper or experience backyard beekeeping for yourself have a look at some of the videos on this beekeeping channel as well as videos from beekeeping creators I have listed below.
Although this beekeeping channel is primarily about beekeeping I am also a quasi pepper who believes in becoming self-sufficient. With that in mind, I have started a garden, planted fruit trees, replaced the hedges in front of my house with blueberry bushes, and have recently built a chicken coop. In short, I will share a lot more than beekeeping on this channel.
A little about me:
I am a person who believes you are never to old to learn something. Be it beekeeping, farming, raising chickens, painting, filming and editing video, making wine, beer, bread, cheese, and other fermentation consumables, play guitar etc... If I see something I want to try I start it immediately. If there is one thing I could choose to pass along to my children this would be it. Never be afraid to try. My wife famously told me once that if you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at it. That means I am bad at quite a few things.
I hope you find my beekeeping videos fun and entertaining as well as get something out of them. I hope I inspire someone to get out and try something new. If you do enjoy my videos, please take a moment to spread the word about this channel and help it, and myself, grow. Have a great day and BEE Happy!

A bit about my channel:
This channel is primarily about beekeeping or more specifically beekeeping 101 because I am just a beginning beekeeper and I figured the best way to learn beekeeping and to be a beekeeper was to buy a flow hive, sometimes spelled flowhive or a flow hive 2 which is sometimes known as a flowhive 2 and begin building by backyard apiary so I would have a place to keep bees. Now, backyard beekeeping is not the only thing I do. I consider myself to be urban farming as I also try to grow a sustainable and edible landscape. Backyard farming for me also includes keeping chicken and building other things in my shop that will help all of the birds, bees, insects, and other natural pollinators. I learn how to feed bees and chickens while showing you my day-to-day activities in my apiary, sometimes known as a bee yard. Some people consider me a prepper and yes there is a little truth to that. I do consider this a form of prepping and becoming self sufficient. Thank you for spending time with me learning about tap hives, flow hives, honeybees, and chickens.

Glad they didn't suffocate during the move being closed up! I had one suffocate last year despite having vents and a screened bottom board, but that one was so packed with bees that I think they plugged up the floor and all died. That move was only about 10 minutes total too. I was shocked and sad! I'd recommend making a screened top for them for next time you move them. Just like an inner cover with a screen instead of wood.

Yikes! 10 minutes and they suffocated? That's terrible.

just done the hive move this weekend as well, due to the commercial bee guy down the road not feeding his bee's i lost a pretty strong well stocked hive so pulled my other 2 hive's out as i didnt like the 12 starving hives to my 2 hive's left ratio. i also got stung in the hand/finger (feels like my finger wants to pop like a sausage in a fry pan 🙂) so i feel for your wife. upside to losing a hive is my survivor hive from summer's wasp infestation (was Basically left with a cup of bee's that i built up over winter) now has lots of drawn out frames to fill as we are now entering spring here in New Zealand so im getting excited and hoping for a good harvest, keep up the great work 😃

Hi Neil, It stinks that the commercial guys bees were robbing you out. I sure do envy you're headed into spring down there. Our season is drawing to an end and to be honest I am thankful. It has been the most challenging season for me so far. I am already dreaming of next season. Anyway, good luck in the upcoming season. Also if you see @SageLilleyman running around down there tell her the Bug Farmer says hello. :-)

Unfortunately I didn't learn the beauty of the 10 frame hive until this season. Do you keep deeps and mediums or do you just use deeps?
@tjjastrem127

@@BugFarmerBees all deeps, I forget which southern KZbin beekeeper said their advice was to use all ten frames or stick to all of one box type but it was good advice. Makes it way easier to swap things around

X3 Feet or X3 Miles Issue. Solution ! Wait until the Evening and Bees are all at Home. Close them up with Vented Mesh in the Entrance. Add a Top Feeder and Feed the Light Sugar Syrup. Say 1:1 or a bit thinner re Sugar to Water Ratio. Then leave the Hive for around x3 or x4 Days. And you find "Bees will Forget their GPS location ! So X3 Feet and X3 Miles doesnt really apply. Move as needed. And again Feed in that New Location and open up the Entrance as a Smaller one to reduce any Robbing or Wasp issue until the Colony is settled into its new location. Works on Nucs, Apiary Changes. Going to the Heather. Sell or Buying a Hive to a new place. Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 This Trick works when you need to move Hives to a Sunnier or Cooler Location. Say short Winter Days (low Sun in the Sky) to maybe a Hive getting to much Full Sun in High Summer. Then "Move" them. . . With no Hassel. Dont bother with the X3 Inches or X3 Mile Rule. Just Close up Hive, Feed it, Move It, and Nuture it. Simples. 😉

Sounds like you have a process worked out. That might work for me in the spring or fall but in m,id summer here it would be locking the bees in an oven for a few days. Actually, I accidentally did that once and it turned out poorly. That is where Juno got her name :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWTKkKmrZ7GJlZY . That said, I do agree that the 3 feet or 3 mile rule is completely subjective. I have found that moving the girls somewhere else in the yard and they laying some branches in front of the hives will force them to re-orient and learn their new home. Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate you. Take care.

With all those abscondings due to ants, I'd say you need to get some ant moats on the other hives as well, not just on the bee barns.
@BugFarmerBees
@BugFarmerBees Жыл бұрын
I have ant motes on the other hives but I was so busy I didn't fill them. After the Blue hive bit the left I refilled the motes but the Air Force hive didn't have them installed for some reason. In short, it was my fault they were chased away. :-(

One of my hives are like that and robbing compounds their behavior. Just removed the queen to get them to requeen, if it does not happen, I have several NUC boxes to combine into failing hives. Also rearing a few fall queens to replace old queens marked yellow. There is always work in the bee yard if you want to be successful.
