I have insulated and heated beehives here in Saskatchewan, Canada. The bees are doing great and I hope all of them (7 hives) would thrive all winter long. I copied your heating method except that I used an app to monitor the temperature of my hives thru my Iphone. Your idea of heating beehives during winter is very important to sustainable beekeeping in temperate climate. Beekeepers in temperate climate should understand that the bees they are tending are tropical insects that need tropical temperature even during winter time. Keep up the good work, brother.
@BugFarmerBeesКүн бұрын
I am so happy the heaters helped your bees this winter. A lot of people have misconceptions about heating hives in that it will make your bees consume more resources and make them weaker overall. I have known for years that both of these things are wrong as I have seen it first hand. Moreover, I was at Bob Binnies Blue Riidge Honey Co. Last week for some supplies and noticed his bees in the observation hives located inside of his heated showroom were behaving in the exact same way my bees behaved in their heated hive. All they do is sit there and rock back an forth until the weather outside is conducive to flying. The bees just don't sit there gorging on honey stores, in fact they do just the opposite. They just chill and wait for spring. Anyway, thanks for leaving a comment and letting me know how your bees were doing. Spring is just around the corner. :-)

Why not add heaters to the struggling ones
@BugFarmerBees4 күн бұрын
Too late to add heaters. To heat the hives I would have to strip down the hives and set the heat box and diffuser on the bottom. It looks like we are knee deep in a heaterless hive season. I have confidence the girls will make it :-)

Happy New Year 2025 to all here ✨🎉🎊 ------ Generally if you see yellow or a ball of yellow the bee's will be alive, if you see only dark purple then the bees are dead. The number of bees in the hive can make a difference as 10,000 bees will make 3x the size return than 3,000 bees and may affect the Temperature readings also. If those IR Cameras are new then you probably need to do a calibration and adjust their color palette's to get more accurate readings and also try to zoom in on the hive so you don't get heat off the trees, etc. in the background.

Unfortunately several of my bees from one hive are attempting cleansing flights and not making it back to the hive. Could be older bees that are leaving because they know their time is short or nosema but I don’t see the typical feces that typically appears with them.

Maybe they are just trying to save the colony from having to remove them after they die. They are acting as their own mortuary bees.

A small struggling cluster won't take much syrup and only backfill around their cluster, had the same issue myself on some nuc boxes with 3 empty frames and one with syrup. Feeding sugar brick in a shim to any that don't have the weight, lost a few tiny nucs already. I think the short days is a signal to not expand or store like you see in warm weather. In the past I had small colonies come out of winter with a full box of honey.. Would like to know where you order your boxes from for your new projects. I'm getting a few from premier-1 as quality has been a concern lately with higher prices on materials.
@BugFarmerBees7 күн бұрын
I think I got my last set of boxes from Mann Lake. They are pretty heavy duty and have held up well.
@heavymechanic27 күн бұрын
@@BugFarmerBees Last year your supers look like Mann Lake handles. Last spring I had a 5-case with all the handles off center like reject grade. When I stack up the supers, bees crawl between the boxes as fitment is not good, use cardboard strips to fill the gap. I had a lot of issues with their boxes. I can say the hive bodies are cheap compared to other suppliers. Nothing from Dadant seems to last or the build quality is poor (the base on a queen castle was firewood but the box was OK). Hillco seems better overall.

Most of the wood from Lowes says Not For Ground Contact, and its dripping wet or curls when it gets left in the sun. One of the 4x4 boards I used for my stand rack looks like a banana.
@BugFarmerBees7 күн бұрын
I have never experienced the banana effect with my hive stands :-). I have about 30 of them and they are all doing just fine. If you are concerned though lowes and home ddepot both sell ground contact pressure treated wood. Personally I think it would be overkill.
@heavymechanic27 күн бұрын
@@BugFarmerBees The banana is an 8-ft section and has 4 hives on it supported on block. 2x4s did the same thing after a week in hot weather. Bob Binnie dips his stuff in motor oil to slow the rot on the ground.

I've been using Scott's GrubEX broadcast under and 10 ft out from my hives here in Fl, the SHB capital of the US. It's cut my beetles down to near nothing. It kills their pupsting larvae in the soil. Then there are no new beetles to fight. Spread it springer late winter early and mid fall. Youll find you're not fighting them anywhere close in 30 days.

Looks like a great new area! Nice to have water nearby. It is a gorgeous area to be doing bees in. As someone else said, you might want to inquire about flooding in that area. Looks like it could easily encompass the entire apiary quickly if it got a big flash flood. Couple questions about the hives: what angle do you put them front to back? I assume you need to angle them for water to run out if you are using a solid bott9m board. Second question is where did you get your honeybee sign at the entry to your home apiary area? What type of paint do you use to paint the outside of your hives? I am getting started this year with two hives and need to paint them over the winter to get ready for the spring.
@BugFarmerBees13 күн бұрын
The land owner said it flooded on rare occasions but I think everything will be fine.
