I did a quick calculation and a 1:1 by weight sugar solution would freeze at 22.22F (-5,43C). If you make a 1:1 solution by volume, it will be even a bit colder before it freezes.

I had a way to go then. It was only 29F outside. That said it has been below freezing every morning for the past couple of weeks. Winter has finally arrived.

I would be more worried about leakage of cold water from the melt or condensation as ice is added insulation that is used for building shelters. Ice caves, igloos or other ice structures are warmer inside than out. The melt however could shock bees or brood that comes into direct contact.

I am just happy I got the feed off the hives for the season. It looks like Ii have done all I can do and the rest is up to the bees. My fingers are crossed they all make it because I need to do 20 splits from those girls in the spring to get bees for the new bee yard.

Have you ever put that hive alive fondant on any of your hives? I put some on last year and I put it on again this year. It seemed to have worked. I didn't lose a hive last year. I've got 11 hives now. Hopefully, I get to keep them all.

That is a product I have not tried yet.

Put it on last year and all mine survived

Would painting the buckets black for fall/ early cold weather keep the sugar water from freezing? Also sugar water freezes faster as sugar lowers the freezing point.
@BugFarmerBeesАй бұрын
Black buckets... That is an idea. Thanks.
@charlesmaurer6214Ай бұрын
I think your confused a bit on freezing as syrup thickens when cold but runs when pure water is frozen solid. Notice any flavored ice treat that the sugar melts out first leaving a spongy ice behind without the sweet taste left.

Okay I have another question for you. This fall september, I had a motorcycle accident and broke my scapula, which is the shoulder blade. I was unable to do my oxacylic acid treatment. Do you think it would be a good idea to do the oxicilic acid now? I'm in central oklahoma, and it's getting pretty cold. So all the bees would be in there, but I don't know about doing the oxylic acid now. Or would you wait until spring?
@BugFarmerBeesАй бұрын
Sorry to hear about the bike accident. I hope you are okay. That is a good question. Myself, I am finished with the OA for the season but I saw a video from Bob Binnie @bobbinnie9872 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqOupWWBmK6Ni8Ufeature=shared ) where he just did his treatment on Nov. 25th and everything worked out fine. Have a look at his video in the link above and see if you are having similar weather conditions.

Getting quilt boxes and mouse Guards on this weekend high 50s this weekend. Is that a heritage? I was looking at a retractable air hose for my place as well. Did you end up open feeding the left over syrup?
@BugFarmerBeesАй бұрын
Yes, it's a Heritage. I filled its teires yesterday :-). I tried to feed the left over syrup but it just got. to cold. After a day I had a ton of dead bees who stayed and froze over night.

I have a question how high should the rear of the hive be to make the condensation run to the front of the hive. Thank you
@BugFarmerBeesАй бұрын
I am not sure. I think the flow hives stand have a setting that puts the front of the hive 3-5 degrees higher than the rear to let the honey flow better. As for the condensation, I haven't worried about it for years ever since Frederick Dunn brought it to my attention that bees inside the hive drink the condensation and use it as a fresh water source in the winter.
