So to summarize: 1. Adjust the frequency of the stroke and ensure the catch is efficient in pushing the water backward 2. Extend your arm during recovery only along the shoulder line. Try the overcorrection example. 3. Extend your toes and ankles when while moving your legs instead of pulling your toes in. This is an excellent tutorial and the examples are great. Thank you very much!

Recently I learnt to swim. It is very funny that I can swim only below water. If I try to bring head out and swim I start getting drowned. I can stay flat inside water. I can swim with either only hand or only leg. But I am struggling to learn free style and back stroke as well. Excited to listen to your suggestions.

Thanks for a free & clear description video. I am a senior (78y) and began taking swim lessons. One thing I see in the video is instruction on ho wto breathe, through mouth, edge of the mouth and goggles. The water is chloride and eyes become red for a quite a few hours. I got a goggle for C$50, it seems to help. Watching your video, I learnt how much energy is waste by doing wrong things. I was not sure how the body floats perfectly parallel to the water surface, my knees always spontaneously bend having used to land-walking. Any tips?

Two things stand out to me in this video. One, the swimmer has a really high head position, especially when coming off the wall. Two, in his flutter kick, his ankles are flexed slightly on the down stroke.

To my comment below, I would add that the first mistake that you point out is that the technique you show is how the 50 meter sprint people use. Straight arm pull and recovery, and the arms are opposite each other rather than staying in the front quadrant, which is more typical for longer distances. Almost all swimmers will go to this style for the last 10 or so meters of any race. It can not be sustained for more than 50 meters. Still think his head position is way too high. It causes an arch in his back which lowers the legs slightly, and that arch creates more drag. Funny thing I have noticed in the pool while swimming my over arm side stroke, I can see everything..... Many people have 'runner's foot' as I call it, ankle flexed to maybe 30 degrees instead of pointing straight, is that they have the problem with freestyle, but when they switch to back stroke, they are way better at pointing their toes. Also, going pigeon toed gives you another 15 or so degrees of dorsi flexion, and you use the whole side of your foot rather than just the toes for propulsion.

Nice vid. However, is it deliberate that the swimmer, while displaying the good form, looks 45° forward instead of the usual "nose down", 90° head position? I'm not saying it's wrong, I'd just want to know if there is something deliberate to this technique, and what it adds compared to what is advised in most other swimming tutorials that focus on the 90°. We can see that his spine is not straight, creating greater water resistance, so what's the benefit of it?

Notice that his butt is about six inches below the surface. This is excessive drag from the hips down to the shins caused by a higher head angle. He should be looking about two feet in front of looking straight down.

Fantastic lesson. I'm 38 and just getting into swimming due to wanting to enter a small triathlon. I was making a lot of effort when front crawling and not actually getting any spread(my wife was kicking my backside). I watched this video and all though I'm far from good, I'm actually swimming much more efficient and getting more spead(beating my wife). I'm now just struggling with the breathing technique when crawling.

Is really rotation from side to side a mistake? or maybe over doing it is the mistake? cause i red that it avoids shoulder injuries; and watching the speedo swimming videos , the swimmers rotate from side to side!
@GuruPrasanna5 жыл бұрын
I think it isn't a mistake, I think what he means is that the hand should still be stretched straight?
@gilean61795 жыл бұрын
When I was a teenager the only thing I did not learn was the breathing part. The heck I can swim the entire length without breathing for air but it did not make sense. Many years later I took again a swimming class which emphasized early on the importance of the hip rotation. Later on everything followed naturally from this. When you hip rotate, the spine, neck, head naturally moves as one unit and stays aligned and naturally the face clears the water line so I am able to breathe to the side. Finally after so many years, I was able to do the freestyle with proper breathing instead of trying to ballistically swing my head to the side to breath just like in my younger years. Hip rotation is central & crucial. There is even a Hip rotation device by Finis (which I have) where a ball falls to one end of the tube when you rotate properly from side to side during the swim cycle.

@FreestyleOptimizer8 жыл бұрын
Actually he is not supposed to look straight (it´s a bit because of the GoPro in front of him). The reason is, that he is a really good swimmer and he doesn´t sink because his body tension is quite good. In my web course I have a whole part just concerning the body tension...

You could have chosen a better swimmer for the demo. This one is obviously a beginner and has a lot of flaws in his stroke besides those 3 mentioned in the video. That head and body positions are just poor. And it surely affects all the other aspects of good form.
