Please, please, please keep the "comfort shoe" videos going through the different seasons! I didn't fully comprehend why my feet were so "picky" since I entered my 50's. Now I get it! Greatly appreciate this video!!!

Melinda Leiva 😂 Love the reference! My feet are picky too so I’ve mostly cleared out all my lovely shoes and boots but I love the flat versions available these days. I don’t yet require actual comfort shoes so there’s that...
@lindajohnson46764 жыл бұрын
I just commented this in the main thread, but perhaps you'll find a shoe store with a CPed to help with your picky needs like what Schuler Shoes offers! -------- Comfort shoes mean different things to different people based on their foot problem. www.schulershoes.com/foot-health/foot-issues/ And while we all would like to wear the best-looking shoe for our outfit, some of us actually need support to keep our ankles from turning in because we have flat or pronating feet. Could you review shoes from Schuler Shoes site for helping us with foundational feet issues? www.schulershoes.com/women-s.html I love that they also make available to customers meeting with one of their CPeds for a FREE foot evaluation! (I personally should only buy shoes after they've evaluated my feet cuz I've invested in several expensive shoes that may not be what's best for me. My long-time go to that I'd get compliments on was the Think brand Mizzy Face sandal. www.schulershoes.com/womens-mizzi-face-by-think-womensmizzifacethink.html (They felt SO good and helped to properly align me. But after buying them at the end of summer once & wearing them during the winter inside my house because they felt so good, I learned they made an expensive slipper. I'd worn-out the sole and discovered new Think soles from a cobbler are costly. )

I wear a lot of booties in the winter. Blondos are super comfortable and water resistent. Hunter boots are great on messy days, but be sure to pay attention to the calf circumference. If you have wide calves, get the short boots or the styles with wider calves.

I really learn from this type of video! One thing that would help me avoid Frumptown is if you point out the detailed specific reasons why a particular shoe is ruining the outfit. I can definitely see the improvement with the “good” shoes, but I don’t always understand beforehand why the “bad” shoes are bad. Xoxo

This was my exact thought! Please help us understand why the "frumpy" shoes are considered frumpy. I see that in your posing in the frumpy you are standing awkwardly and look blah, but in the non-frumpy shoes you are bouncy and moving around and posing attractively. Would be helpful if you just stood flat front for both frumpy and non-frumpy and for you to explain why one is frumpy and the other is not. Rant over. Lol ;) Love and appreciate your suggestions and helpful insights always!

I started seeing a foot doctor for pain from running years ago and he blamed part of the loss of the fat pad on the bottom of out feet on our shoe choices. We should be wearing our squishy supportive shoes while we exercise and no other time. Putting what he calls casts on our feet all the time makes our feet muscles ligaments and tendons weak (ever see anybody right after getting a cast removed?), and requiring our back, knees, hips to take over what our feet should be doing. The rest of the time we should ideally wear flat, low thickness, zero drop, low padding, low arch support, etc other times (okay I don't always do this but I do walk my dogs miles/day in flat sneakers a lot like Erin's vans or flip flops and stopped hiking in my trail runners). At home we should be barefoot or in socks all the time (always do this). Changed my life. Hope passing it on helps someone else.

I'm in the same boat as you as a runner with loss of fat pads in the metatarsal area. Also as we age the transverse arch collapses which is double trouble. I've tried many things: running on softer surfaces, different shoes, inserting met pads. I haven't had a lot of success. Maybe fillers in the balls of our feet is the answer!?

I went to a different doctor in 2019 and he recommended asics tennis shoes as well as comfort shoes. Back in 2007 I sold all my shoes and what didn't sell I donated.(i kept my Nike tennis shoes)

I've found a few contradicting pieces of advice out there: 1. Go barefoot most of the time or very little padding in shoes 2. Wear stiff soled, "supportive" shoes ALL the time, including supportive slippers indoors. LOL I just have to laugh. I can find advice and experts online and in my real life - to back up *either* viewpoint. My podiatrist says wear comfort shoes all the time, stiff soles, etc. I have lost nearly all cartilage in one of my foot ball joints. And I have plantar fascitis sometimes. I'm over 50. I don't believe foot issues are usually from running -- I believe if at all, they are due simply to aging and the natural loss of collagen, etc. and for women, from wearing high heels in their 20s and 30s too often and for too long a time per wear.
@leapintothewild4 жыл бұрын
@@i.e.presents638 It's the height difference between the heel and toe, but where high heels are described by height (3" heel), running and athletic shoes use the term "drop". So traditional running shoes with a thicker heel will have an "X millimeter drop" down to the rest of the shoe, a "zero drop" shoe will be flat with the heel and toe level, and a "negative drop" will have the heel lower than the rest of the shoe so that it provides lots of stretch to the achille's heel and back of the leg. Pros and cons for all of these, especially depending on what you're doing and the state of your feet, and usually you make the switch from one type to another gradually to prevent pain. (ask me how I know...)

I think that 'we' are a dwindling market for most companies even though we (were) the largest group f consumers for many years. Times change even if we remain th4 same and corporations want new and bigger...which seems to match the lastest generation. Sad but true I have found, but buck up, there are a number of designers that still do notice and care for our neds. Try Michael Kors 9on sale), Isaac Mizrahi and even COLE HAAN for what you may be looking for.

I do think it’s sometimes a fine line between an okay shoe and one that really elevates an outfit. Some of the tricks I default to when I’m wondering if a shoe falls into one category or another are: 1) a bit of a heel is always a good idea (Eileen Fisher & Vionic make great comfort heels), 2) a flesh toned shoe is generally going to be more versatile and create a nice silhouette, and 3) steer clear of ankle straps if you have thick ankles. 😊 Great video!
@SandyCheeks635642 жыл бұрын
I learned that about ankle straps. But, if you're wearing pants you won't see them, and they help me keep looser shoes from falling off

Hi Erin. Love your site and great video. I live in VT where even 20 year olds wear tons of ugly comfort shoes! I’m 62 and hyper mobile, so comfort shoes are a must, but only if they aren’t frumpy. One solution I can suggest for those who really have to have the arch support, like me, is to buy insoles with strong arch support and heal cups. Many cute sneakers that are not comfort shoes can be quickly turned into supportive comfort shoes with insoles inserted. There are loads of different brands.

Yes, hello! There is a fortune to be made if someone has the $$ to start a company. Women over 40 want (most of us, anyway) to look stylish AND not accentuate our tummies, upper arms, and to have shoes that look stylish and are comfy. Why is this so difficult? The "fashion industry" needs to get with it. Also, more elder women have money to spend than 20-somethings, as a group.

Tammy Roach I dunno, the first ones were BAD, and thr criss cross straps were far more appealing, agreed...but the black “BAD” ones were so much more intersting than the “Good” options...kind of shocked. I see nothing flattering or stylish about wide straps cutting off the line of the leg that high up. I think the Picolino’s (with the color of the pant prominently utilized) continue the line far better than the stumpy white sneakers that cut off the line. I adore Erin and see her point but, as she said at the end, this is subjective. I have more of a European mindset so maybe that plays into it. Do I think T straps or fisherman sandals are, generally speaking, on the frumpy side? Yes. Do I think these ones were frumpy compared to the options suggested? Nope, not even close. So, call me frumpy, I guess. I am a shoe lover from way back, sold shoes at high end stores for years. As an overweight gal shoes are my best chance to be up to date and I own a TON of shoes, get more compliments on my shoes than anything else...I stand by my choices. I would chalk this up to personal taste and just encourage you, as Erin always does, to just try on a lot of shoes, look at a lot of options, wear outfits you need shoes FOR when you shop, take pics, bring a chic friend along, and decide what best fits your life and aesthetic. Just went through the links and I have not changed my mind after seeing pics up close. One thing...there is no link for the “frumpy”. shoes in the second, black, outfit. I really want to see those up close!

In addition to our feet losing the pads and arches falling, my feet have gotten larger. I wore a 7 when I got pregnant with my daughter. Slowly, I went to a 7.5, 8 and now I mostly buy an 8.5. I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 27 years, so a comfortable shoe is a non negotiable for me. A lot of the comfort shoes brands have upped their game as far as style and comfort. I have many pairs of Naturlizers, Clarks and Born, and they are my go to for comfort and style. I have found boots by Sam Edelman, the Kadison style, that have 1.75" heels, but are stylish and comfortable. I bought them in black, winter white and red. I think Louboutins are beautiful, but I could NEVER wear them. I did see in Bergdorf's fall preview that Louboutin now makes a ballet flat and the heel height is lower on some styles. Erin is correct that the majority of shoe manufacturers ignore a large demographic, and we are the ones with the most disposable income.

Thank you for these tips. I have a closet full of heels I can no longer wear...always looking for cute comfort shoes. When I find a pair, I get one in each color. I always watched the younger girls at weddings and events with their stylish high shoes and by the end of the night, everyone is dancing barefoot. I have definitely switched to comfort. I have enough aches and pains...lol. I found some inserts that help.

Love this, Erin. You have such great taste in shoes. The Linea Paulo wedge sneakers you recommended got me through the airport no problem! Also- my husband is in the foot and ankle hardware business and said your cartilage does break down as you get older- it acts as a cushion for your joints. The “fat pad” is soft tissue which is found at the base of your toes on the underside (different from cartilage). That also breaks down over time (and worse as you wear heels.) He used to see surgeons roll up skin graft and place it in there to Re-cushion the area. He’s never heard of injections there but that’s not to say it doesn’t exist. Hope that helps ;).

I love Paul Green sneakers. They are VERY comfortable with first wear even! I just purchased a second pair at Nordstrom two days ago. They are a little pricey however. Also Alexander McQueen has some stylish and comfortable sneakers but very pricey. I saw a lady in her twenties/thirties wearing them and they looked gorgeous on her. She said "They are very comfortable and Alexander McQueen at Nordstrom or the website." Ladies please don't put fillers in your feet. That is crazy and dangerous! Those fillers have chemicals which leak into the tissue of your body and can eventually lead to autoimmune disorders.

I actually like the black shoes. Shoes should also have a heel strap. I find that when they don't, my toes end up gripping the shoe to keep my foot in place which can lead to cramps and other alignment issues. Vionic makes supportive shoes, Taos is great and Chacos is good for sandals.

Thanks for the tips! The Van's were my favorite from the recommendations; someday I need to get a pair. Otherwise, I actually liked ALL the shoes, even the frumpy ones😬😳 I wear a lot of Earth sandals in the summer and Vionic booties in the winter, because I have a bad bunion (& other foot is getting there too). Also like Munro brand shoes. Oofos flip flops are my house shoes from May to October, am on my second pair. They are SO good for plantar fasciitis. I have learned I have to prioritize my foot health over vanity if I want to delay or avoid bunion surgery for as long as possible (as far as walking around in heels - can't do that). It can cost a lot to try to still look somewhat relevant and have happy feet, but the shoes last longer... def go for classic styles.🙂

Erin, you’re cracking me up with your reaction to the comfort Mary James. 🤣I’ve heard that the brand, Dear Frances, makes really comfortable shoes. They’re high end beautiful shoes, and influencers say they’re super comfy right away. But I think we’re in a good fashion place for comfort right now because loafers, mules and sneakers are so trendy . Also boots are always on trend for fall/winter and if you size up you can stick an insert in there to cushion. I think there are ways to be comfy while wearing more mainstream shoes.

Vans don’t have the right support for my feet (same with Converse), but I’m a HUGE fan of old-school canvas PF Flyers! I own at least 8 pairs in a variety of colors, and they look really cute with jeans and shorts, even casual dresses. Also, I’ve been a Zappos customer since they started in the late 90s, and their customer service is STELLAR, with free shipping and returns. But I don’t find their search feature thorough enough, so once I find a shoe I like, I search by that brand. So if you like something from Naturalizer or Clarks for instance, look at their brand pages instead of depending on all their styles showing up in a comfort category.
