Repertoire tip: organize your setlist by tunings and capos. If you’re playing a gig, you don’t want awkward pauses between songs-unless you’re charismatic as hell 😄

The Forscore app was a game changer for me. Synchronicity of my repertoire and charts between all my devices. Also sortable by various elements (key, genre, composer, etc)

Cheers Ben! Google actually has a metronome too, which is handy sometimes!

Great tips! Thank you! Once in a while I play really long time almost non-stop on the guitar (8 hours) and bass (4 hours) to achieve endurance.

Thanks for the info about playing as loud then playing with more dynamics. Can't wait to try this. I know it's going to change my playing.
@marcinwieczorek48525 күн бұрын
So true about dynamics - Brian Sutton had a great exercise for it to play groups of 3 notes (fingerstyle or hybrid, on adjacent strings or spread - explore as many options as possible) and focus on playing one of the notes louder so it clearly stands out and the others more quiet and doing that for each individual note in the given chord. Certainly improved my sound a lot and it's a def a huge area to keep exploring. Thank for your lessons Joe, good so see you're back and the update you recently posted sounds great!

Hey Joe - I don't play a lot of fingerstyle anymore (mostly Bluegrass) but I really find your wisdom and advise to be gold. Thank you for everything you do for the guitar community!!

These are all great tips in my opinion and subjects most of us neglect to our subsequent disadvantage. I’ve been practicing “metronome starving” daily for 10 minutes for the last 10 months to address chronic speed up - a difficult habit to break. Other items in this list resonate with me, especially repertoire list/organization and dynamics. Five thumbs up to these recommendations. Thank you.

love the metronome on two and. what do put the metronome on for songs in 6/8 like what a wonderful world or Georgia On My Mind? much ❤ to you and your family
@Joe_Robinson24 күн бұрын
To practice with the metronome on the backbeat in a 6/8 feel, the click would be on 4. The tempo would be a very low number, 30 bpm or so.

Dynamics is the most underrated technique. So glad you talked about and have a tip that I will start to use to improve my playing. I will also start using 2 and 4 on the metronome as others say it really improves playing.

Cheers Joe, I really feel my playing is improving continuously thanks to guitar player like you, Tommy, Gareth Pearson or Brooks Robertson 🙂 Great to see that for a niche genre, we have a fantastic group of role-models who help support our guitar playing effort. Joe, I can't agree with u anymore. I have friends that after playing for years are hopeless on rhythm, dynamics and timing.
@Joe_Robinson24 күн бұрын
I think we agree.. Malcolm Gladwell misrepresented the 10,000 hour ‘rule’. If spend 10,000 hours making our own breakfast we don’t become master chefs, & if we noodle for years on the guitar, we probably won’t get much better. I can recommend the book ‘Peak’ to understand the best methods for practicing.
