I am 62yrs old and just re learning guitar. I have always loved classical guitar. Playing the traditionsl way with footstool hurts my back and shoulders. I have gone to playing at across my knee. Less pain. Guitar is not a pain free hobby both mentally and physically. However never give up, it's a joyous journey both frustrating and exhilarating.

This is applicable for all intrusments. I am relearing 20 years of keyboard playing with unbalanced hip because I never stood properly. I learnt that Taubman Approach for piano and yoga/exercise are working best for me. I have been applying similar techniques towards effortless playing on guitar. This info by Julian is 1000% gold!

Recently had a nasty bout of tendinitis. Working my way back after over a year without playing, and it's frustrating how slow it's going at times. Knowing that someone as skilled as Julian has gone through similar difficulties and came out on the other end still able to absolutely rip makes me feel much better about where I am right now. Appreciate all the insights and experiences.

What a great presentation. Playing for 60 years, and I was able to relate to much of what was discussed. Plus, I enjoy Julian's playing😊

This is very helpful to me, I'm working my way through a bad patch playing-wise. I hesitate to call it "yips" but it's maybe yips adjacent? My R/L coordination suddenly desync'ed and my confidence level has been affected. Thanks for this Julian.

Miles Davis was asked how he chose a player for his band, his response was 'it's how he holds the instrument and how they stand'. It told him that the musician was comfortable and confident.

I think there’s some weird noise reduction happening on the audio track. Julian’s voice is warbly and robotic sounding and pretty distracting
@vinivola6 сағат бұрын
Yes, I noticed it too, and I've been noticing.It recently on many videos not related to music.But all different subjects and john ross is pretty weird. Just wanted you to know if you're not losing your mind.

Phase cancellation. Audio 101....but alas....even the people behind the camera (or more likely, single person) should not be doing work with a world class musician. If you don't know enough about recording and editing to know what phase cancellation is, or even notice it happening you need to find another line of work.

Honesty i think there is noone behind the camara; Julians Wife maybe. But the quality feels a bit like a non-optimal apple facetime call or smth. I think it has been recorded on an iphone or whatever.

Someone processed the sound in post by gating the room reverb or just using a process plugin that is made to convert bad audio into studio vocal booth emulation audio.

At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs, it looks to me like your problem is trying to finger (particularly with ring and pinky) notes that are on the 5th and 6th string whilst keeping your thumb near the top. I have long fingers and don't try to do that even though I play with the thumb on top most of the time. I just slide my thumb under as I move to the lower strings. Your shoulder goes down to help, but there isn't enough reach in the hand. I can feel the tension that I've experienced doing this just watching you do it.

I cut the tip of my left index finger almost completely lost. With an answered prayer, with Time and Faith it completely healed. I was really angry and scared at first. So, I totally get this

I got to the 5 minute mark without hearing the answer. Any clues to when I need to skip to?

Basically, take a pause when you tense up. And play lighter gauge strings/lower the action if you are fighting the guitar too much.

No, this is just master class level stuff. He's talking to people who are so advanced in skill and theory that they are looking for something subtle that unlocks an ability for them to do more of what their brain creates. (That's not to say an intermediate or even beginner player can't benefit from this, it's just not as straightforward as "hold your pick this way" type instruction.)

You should consider dual-miking with a lapel mic for this kind of content, a single on-camera shotgun isn't ideal.
