41 years later, I can still hear my mom's voice from downstairs: "Turn that crap down, will you?". If these guys were in another genre or art form, they all would have been knighted by now. They all are on the top of the technical tree. World-class musicians, performers and individuals. Bruce (the front man) is a renaissance man: rock star, airliner pilot, athlete (fencing), a degree in history and a PhD in music theory. Not to mention a cancer survivor.

That comment had me busting out laughing. I still recall my mom pounding on my bedroom door to yell at me to turn down my Walkman. It was full blast but I thought i was being quiet since I had the earbud headphones! My early teens were spent with Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC and so many more. Thanks for that memory!

Based on the Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimean war, 1854. That event also inspired the 1854 poem of the same name by Lord Tennyson. The song was released in 1983, it's on their 4th album, Piece of Mind. Eddie is their mascot.

"Eddie" (the zombie looking character you see briefly) is the mascot of the band and he is on all the album covers. When you see Iron Maiden tshirts, you will see "Eddie" on them, not the band members themselves. One of the things that made Iron Maiden so cool. They had the best album covers ever!!

This song 'The Trooper' came out in 1983 from Iron Maiden's 4th album 'Piece of Mind'... it was written by bassist Steve Harris & the album became another platinum success in the US and top 5 in the UK... This song still gets played live in concert 🤘🤘 Iron Maiden went through a few members, but this line-up is the classic one: Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Steve Harris (bass), Dave Murray and Adrian Smith (guitars) and Nicko McBrain (drums)... Currently, Iron Maiden is a 6-piece band (3 guitarists) w/ those same members + Janick Gers (guitar)

I haven’t looked at all the comments to see if anyone has already said this but in case no one has heres a lil backstory about this track: The song lyrics are a description of sorts about an experience of a “Trooper”(or calvary soldier)during a famous calvary charge in a battle of the Crimean war, what made that particular battle so famous was a poem written about the charge by a well known poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson published in 1855, Bruce Dickenson(vocalist)has a degree in history and many of the bands songs are based on historical events or historical people, the poem which was the basis for the story told by the lyrics is as follows: The Charge of the Light Brigade By: Alfred, Lord Tennyson Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. "Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!" he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. "Forward, the Light Brigade!" Was there a man dismay’d? Not tho’ the soldier knew Some one had blunder’d: Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volley’d and thunder’d; Storm’d at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred. Flash’d all their sabres bare, Flash’d as they turn’d in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army, while All the world wonder’d: Plunged in the battery-smoke Right thro’ the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reel’d from the sabre-stroke Shatter’d and sunder’d. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred. Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley’d and thunder’d; Storm’d at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell, They that had fought so well Came thro’ the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred. When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! All the world wonder’d. Honor the charge they made! Honor the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred!

Iron Maiden revolutionized heavy metal sonically and they introduced their heavy metal mascot named 'Eddie the Head'... When Iron Maiden was signed in 1979, they had been a band for a few years in the UK ... Their manager Rod Smallwood noticed that they had a silver mask displayed behind the stage which spewed smoke and had fake blood dripping from its mouth during Maiden's live set. When Smallwood asked bassist Steve Harris about the mask, Harris told him they called it 'the Head' (In a thick British accent, it sounded like the "Ed") Hence, the name "Eddie the Head"... 👹 While Iron Maiden was working on their debut album for a 1980 release, Rod Smallwood noticed that the members of Iron Maiden were particularly introverted... bassist Steve Harris was soft-spoken offstage... then-vocalist Paul Di'Anno was a nice fellow; he was known to get into trouble sometimes, but he wasn't a big personality who stood out offstage. Smallwood felt that they needed a 'character' which could embody Iron Maiden's image... Smallwood contacted a local artist named Derek Riggs who showed him a bunch of his art, mostly science fiction characters... But in his portfolio, there was a painting of a crusty, skeletal ghoul w/ hollow eyes and punk rock hair, standing in the dark streets of London... Riggs said that painting was inspired by a photo he had seen of a decapitated soldier's head placed on a tank during the Vietnam war... The character represented the punk youth of London decaying on the streets. Smallwood loved the painting and made it the cover of Iron Maiden's debut album in 1980 and gave it the name 'Eddie the Head"... the character was also brought to life onstage by a crew member wearing an 'Eddie' mask during Maiden's concerts... In 1982, Iron Maiden was popular enough for the band to build a giant 'Eddie' for the stage and have him appear towering over the band members while they played live ... 'Eddie' was featured on all the Iron Maiden album covers and all their t-shirts, which became a marketing gold mine cos 'Eddie' was instantly recognizable. Artist Derek Riggs spent much of the 80's and early 90's commissioned to painting 'Eddie' in various incarnations... Apparently, he split w/ Iron Maiden because he got tired of drawing 'Eddie'... He went on to paint other album covers... Other artists were hired from 1992 to depict 'Eddie' for Maiden's albums and t-shirts. Motorhead also had a mascot - 'Snaggletooth'... which was a monster head w/ tusks protruding from its jaws... Dio had their mascot 'Murray' which looked like a demon w/ horns and giant eyes... Overkill had the vampire skull w/ batwings logo (which Avenged Sevenfold plagiarized...) ... Anthrax had the plump, cartoonish 'Not! man' ... But it was Megadeth who got another great heavy metal mascot - 'Vic Rattlehead'... a skull w/ its eyes sealed shut... it's jaws locked and ears screwed shut.

Alot of their music is related to history or classic literature.... "2 Minutes to Midnight" alluding to the armageddon clock, "Aces High" was about the pilots defending England during WW2, "Run to the Hills" was about the slaughter of American Indians during the 1800's, "Where Eagles Dare" was about the movie of the same name, "The Flight of Icarus" was Greek mythology about Icarus and his father Daedalus. I could keep going, but you get the point. At least 50% of their songs back before 2000 were based on these types of stories. I was at an Iron Maiden concert abouit 15 years ago and a guy had a shirt on that said "I went to an Iron Maiden Concert and all I got was this shirt, and a degree in History..." Coolest concert tee there!

I even played football with Stevie Harris for a local amateur football ⚽️ team(Melbourne FC) and trust me,he was as good at that as he is on the bass!!! Best thing about Iron Maiden is that they have stayed true rockers and are STILL the most humble, decent guys you could meet. Up the Irons ⚒️

This is one of my favorite heavy metal songs, and a favorite from my teenage boy years. The tempo and the horse themed or complimentary. Everything other than the lyrics with describe the charge of the light brigade (a group of light cavalry) is meant to manifest and reflect horses and soldiers driving themselves in a serious pace to their doom. This video is the first one that really made me think of my own mother and maternal grandmother. Mom has a tin-year and was born in the 1930s show her taste in music was non-existent as far as my life went. With my grandmother, born in 1912, the same year as the Titanic sinking, her musical preferences were even more irrelevant. I cannot imagine my mom and maternal grandmother reviewing songs like the three of you do, which makes me appreciate the three of you all the more.

Don't know if you know this,.. but during the filming of the 1936 movie, The Charge of the Light Brigade starring, Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and David Niven, the movie which this song is based on, over 120 horse were tripped using a wire, of which 25 were killed. Errol Flynn attacked (verbally) the director over this. Furthermore, a Stuntman was also killed when he fell from a horse and was impaled on a lance (sword) stuck in the ground.

Excellent Musicians with awesome hair, great story tellers, and owners of Crazy pants! 🤣 The LP "Number of the beast" is my favorite, as it is the one I first bought when it was released, and I wore it out. Each song on it was a huge hit, and I think I owned a concert shirt for each song. When I first seen them in concert, it was the late 80's, and their Mascot "Eddie" was around 15 ft tall, walking around stage as they played. Was over 2 hours of a sold out amphitheater. Leaving the show, I spun a main bearing in my Trans Am. That night was both happy and sad. I will never forget it. Check out Run to the Hills off this same LP for more great story telling.

Theres something to be said when a band can go to another country and flat sell out a show singing songs in english that isnt the primary language the population speaks, not just once but virtually every time they are there, with 177 original tracks, next year will make a half century of the band known the world over, and essentially the same line up for decades, whether you like the music or not you have to respect the talent and dedication to the band itself that these guys have had its truly amazing and not too many other bands out there can claim as much overall success and fame as Maiden can…and yet they have still not been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame unbelievable, i have to say it has kinda killed in me any feeling of exclusive accomplishment that institution is suppose to give by its judgement…

Maiden was one of the first metal bands i started to listen to, i had played drums for about a year before started my metal story. I had finished all the abba , the disco and even some 50´s rock n roll albums but it got to easy to play and i wanted a challange. Next was jazz music and that was hard to play but i never liked the energy, so i started to listen to metal and maiden was one of those bands and i tell u that was a new level of drumming. Ok so this song is about a small was between England and Russia when england invaded the Crimea area and the general leading prolly the best cavallery at the time, the Light Brigade, missunderstood an order given and decided to sen these men straight at the frontline. I think they were about 650 men and less than 50 survived i think. Sabaton was not first at making songs about war history, maiden have many songs about this topic and i have heard Joachim from Sabaton say that one of his bands he was inspired by was Maiden and they have also been fronting Sabaton several times.
