A leading cardiologist gives three habits you should establish to improve the health of your heart. At least four out of five heart disease cases could be prevented, according to estimates. These habits can help you stay healthy and lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
Dr. Kim Williams, former president of the American College of Cardiology, joins "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room LIVE.
Other Topics
- Is salt or fat the bigger health concern?
- Is frozen vegan pizza a healthier option?
- Is adding olive oil to coffee a healthy idea?
- And more!
Have a question? Post it in the comments or chat and we’ll answer as many as possible during the live broadcast.

I started drinking a cup of pomegranate juice every day. Studies have shown the juice will dissolve plaque buildup in the arteries. After 2 months of drinking the juice, I stopped having chest pains. 7 months now, and still no chest pains. I also changed my diet to mostly fruits and vegetables.

My problem is i don’t sleep good at night. Most nights I only get 5 hours I seldom get 6 hours. I just started on a plant based diet. I was a vegetarian for 15 years but fell off by preparing meals for my family. I am on my grandson U Tube. My name is Monica. I am taking blood pressure meds and have been taking it for years.

Sea salt and pink salt are just high priced salt with impurities. The issue, in any case, is not salt it is the sodium which is about 40% of salt (table, sea and pink). You are going to get just as much sodium with sea or pink salt as you are with ordinary table salt. All this stuff about sea and pink salts is just marketing hype.

A couple of years ago I read a great little book on natural healing called ‘My Physician, Myself’, written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention. It’s available on Amazon and well worth the read. You might also look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to 102. Anyone interested maintaining healthy senior years should read this this book, and something by Cornaro. His books are very short but very pointed.

Loved the show Chuck! I would love for Dr Kim Williams to interview my great aunt Ruby Woods she’s around 90 years old or older. Lives in the heart of Appalachia Leslie County Kentucky. She had a heart attack over 20 years ago her doctor added stints and told her Ruby I want you to stop smoking and drinking alcohol. She said she walked out of the hospital and never smoked another cigarette and never drank another drop of alcohol. She is in excellent health normal weight eats chicken Cornish game hen and fish beans and cornbread. Vegetables and fruits they use to always have a big garden. She looks forward to going to town on Fridays for catfish hush puppies coleslaw and fries. Her mother a school teacher lived to be around 100 years old. Her great grandson is studying at university of Kentucky to be a Doctor specializing in cardiology. I wish he could connect with Dr Williams to be his mentor. I deeply appreciate what Dr Williams is doing to educate the Appalachian communities .

I am a thin person and I do not benefit from adding EVOO. It raises my lipid #'s.. I was on the fence about this because of varied studies on EVOO and do benefit by not adding oils.Rather , eating some whole olives during the week since they have fiber . I realize that being thin means adding oil increases calories and helps to maintain weight however not all individuals respond favorably to extracted oils.

@@debbY100 Dr. Brooke Goldner is an expert in treating autoimmune disease. She says stop all oils because they are inflamitory. She makes no exceptions. Instead get those beneficial chemicals from dark leafy greens. If we can get the same benefit from greens, I say skip the oils which have risks that greens do not. Plus greens have lots of other nutrients (nutrient dense, not calorically dense..the exact opposite of oils). Also, oils are a big contributor to excess calories which mess up everything in the body. I'm super far from perfect, but I definatley avoid cooking with oil, and I avoid adding oil to salads (ie no commercial. Salad dressings).

Don’t the studies he refers to not show olive oil lowering cholesterol, but that it just raises it less than animal fat? Does anyone know which study he’s referring to? EDIT: The studies I have seen compare a group consuming only olive oil with a group consuming animal fat and then show that the olive oil group exhibits lower cholesterol levels. They don't seem to compare it to a person avoiding refiled oils. If anyone knows what study he refers to when he says that olive oil actually lowers cholesterol, I would love to read it.

you're so right. i knew something was off with his praising of oils. very dangerous message to send the general population watching this video. he even says if you'r e healthy "A LOT of olive oil can be good for you" that is patently false and dangerous information.

I think maybe the olive oil companies are getting desperate cause oil has gone out of favor and veganism is better for us than the Mediterranean diet so they have to think of new ways to promote their product.

Are there reputable studies showing the predominance of evidence of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats to be unsafe? Don't think there are. I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Williams. I find him far more based on science than some others where it's more religion.

@@hermitonthelake science is constantly changing. You should look into recent scientific breakthroughs about fiber and the micro biome. There is no reason to put a shot of olive oil, or any other oil in your coffee. Eat the rainbow and you will get everything you need. And you won’t even have to do time restricted eating. Avoid animal products, processed food, coconut and palm oil, limit your salt and sugar and that’s how to be healthy and reverse disease. But everyone’s looking for the magic bullet.
