We have 1 dedicated bed that has been dug deep, soil amended with compost and vermiculite/perlite, and riddled deep. It gets a light sprinkling of espoma tomato tone (3-4-6) stirred in at time of planting. Slow release, organic. Then just consistent watering. No problems with wonky or hairy carrots, ever. Just keep the soil light, fluffy, and well drained.

I only knew about water deficiencies causing hairy roots, now I know to be on the lookout for nitrogen issues if they are not 'old'. Thanks, love learning new things especially for my garden.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Yeah, its quite interesting how a lack of water causes roots, but an excess of nitrogen does as well....strange! Thanks for watching Sandy! 🙂

Thanks Jeff! I had always thought that was what peelers were for! Never had a homegrown carrot that wasn't at least a little hairy. Now I know how to minimize this.

Hi Jeff, my carrots get harvested by my blue heeler. She turns her head sideways and pulls them at ground level, never breaking the tops or carrot. I had to put a around them. I had some left for me😂

Hi Jeff. I was a failure with my carrots. Like i said in previous video. I must have over watered. But i kept hearing your voice say anybody can grow carrots. I dont know if you said that or like carrots are one of the easiest to grow. But sincerely I am going to grow carrots if its the last thing i do. Now Jeff, im funnin". Ill figure it out. As for hairy yep my 4 cenimeter carrots had some, ha ha. And by the way, my 4 year old grandson wanted to eat them so i washed the little suckers and let him.!! Lol. Ok im silly to day. But truly youre the best. Thanks Jeff. Take care see ya on your next. ❤

Dang, sorry to hear that Donna! Have you tried container carrots? More control over the soil conditions.... Could be a difference maker.
@FrozEnbyWolf150 Жыл бұрын
I simply assumed this was normal. I intercrop my carrots around other plants that have high nitrogen demands, and everything gets a nitrogen foliar feed as well, so I can't avoid hitting the carrots. They usually come up looking downright fuzzy, but I don't consider it a problem.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Not a problem at all.... Just that the majority of the world prefers them without....

The timing of this video is funny. I just pulled up my carrots yesterday and they were pretty hairy. I just rubbed them under the faucet and they cleaned up easily.
@wildweeds Жыл бұрын
Yes, my garden produced hairy carrots this year. I did not fertilize and so excess nitrogen was not likely to be the problem. I did water everyday, but the soil is gravelly and so the water drains rather quickly. Also I may have waited longer than I should have before pulling them out of the ground. They still tasted pretty good nonetheless!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Definitely still taste the same! Most aesthetic. 🙂
@CmdrSoCal Жыл бұрын
The hairs rub off easily when cleaning the dirt off. Leaving black carrots in the soil for an entire season and fed lots of nitrogen produced giant solid black parsnip shaped carrots.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Yup, they usually present no problem at all!

Great, I thought this video would come tomorrow. So most likely my carrots were hairy was the lack of moisture. And I was thinking not to drawn them...

I knew about excess nitrogen causing hairy carrots but not about lack of water. It’s usually not a problem here in rainy Ireland!! Happy to eat hairy carrots but carrot root fly infested not so much. They’re the bane of my carrot growing life.
