Wayne D observed this (compression into the ground to start downswing) as a hallmark of the great ball strikers over many eras) but you nailed this and had some great drills to cement it in for this student. When I have hit it my best over the years this is exactly what I felt regardless of the methodologies I was trying to employ at the time. It is subtle and amounts to the amount of raise you get when you inhale deeply into your chest but when I did this my torso could compress down much better to P5 vs just getting compressed going back and then extending too early. Then the hips are deep and you can just extend hard through the shot. So it is the _TIMING_ of when this happens and why which you captured brilliantly.

Simon's story and mine are virtually identical. I was off 3 aged 16 and stopped playing aged 39 when I was off 5. Wind forward 20 years when I retired and took up golf again. I struggled to break 100! I've worked at the game, loads of lessons with different coaches. I've got down to 12 now but it's hard being consistent. I can break 80 next round shoot 90 plus.

Whilst as we get older we may find areas which are not as strong as they once were but as you've discovered, Alan, you can become stronger in other areas which could mean that getting older can just be a mindset constraint, not necessarily a physical!

You should check out Gray Cook at FMS (Functional Movement Systems). They talk like you do! Lol! Your methods are the real deal.....I should have done this earlier in my golf journey, but like so many.....chase the shiny objects and forget how special WE are....rather than emulating someone we are not! I started watching Zen videos this passed week. I haven't tried hitting balls yet with these ideas, but I have swung my driver and a practice club for about 30 minutes.. My driver feels like it weighs about 200 kilos at the top before I start my downswing using the long delay caused by the club shaft moving closer to my shoulder at the top of the swing as I shift my pressure over to the forward leg. Is this a common experience, or am I probably doing something wrong?
@GRFGolf2 жыл бұрын
Tricky question to answer! The main thing to take away if we were to make generalisations is the concept of self-exploration in this style of coaching. So ultimately, once you start playing shots, the results will tell you if you're doing something worth exploring further or not! Nothing is really right or wrong in this context, it's just movement!

That's a hell of a lot of swing thoughts. I'm far too stupid to follow all that. Was similarly off 1 nearly 50 years ago; didn't play for over 30 years, came back 10 months ago off 26, now down to 12 and aiming for single figures soon, but I'm just hitting shots and trying to feel good contacts rather than build a series of swing thoughts and possibilities.
@GRFGolf2 жыл бұрын
It's a doing thing not a thinking thing. I'm just explaining the reason for the exercise. All you have to do is explore using the exercise without thinking technically. Just explore hitting balls and discovering how you can best apply the feelings you generate to hit your best shots. The idea isn't to think of all that info whilst hitting. Learning how to learn is an important thing.

@@GRFGolf been there. It's a simple game but very complicated. I've battled being too technical minded to learn but I do better when I'm more simplified. It's knowing how your body works and how your body is meant to work in the swing and making adjustments. It angers me at times. Never master it, ever

@@GRFGolf I've come to terms with it. Incidentally, as you replied to my comment, I was on the golf course and I was striping it. Only 200 yards carry as I don't full swing ever, I feel its better to hit fairways. Plus my technique breaks down and my body goes too fast for my arms ha. Was -1 after 5 which was ridiculous for me. Soon sorted itself though as I finished +10 haha. Still happy with that though. Nearly breaking 80, next summer I'm hoping that's my season.

In other words, he lost confidence and became anxious in his swing. Hence the way early release and lift. No biggie, i see it all the time.
@GRFGolf2 жыл бұрын
Bit more to it than that imo. His intention behind his swing was creating noise and confusion. By his own admission he didn't really have an understanding of his own swing or any direction to improve.
