Excerpt #1
Fearful and profane words briefly flashed through his mind. He knew he was danger close to this cub and that what came next could be disastrous for him. He knew if he was lucky, he may be able to get to his bear spray, still stowed in his backpack, now leaning on his mountain bike.
As Jeremy bent down and opened the flap, a few things he neglected to do flashed through his mind. He now regretted not loading his firearm and leaving his bear spray at the bottom of his pack, instead of clipping it to his hip. Experience told him that missing these details is bad, but usually not crucial. His experience today would reveal just how crucial every little detail is when you are confronted by a grizzly.
Before he could get his hand around the handle of his bear spray bottle, an ominous crack of a twig snapping just behind his right shoulder provided a clue to the question that plagued him. As he turned his head he could see the sow grizzly in mid-air, her left paw outstretched toward him. The whites of her eyes conveyed her rage and her wide open mouth clearly presented her violent intentions.
Jeremy reacted lightning-fast by grabbing his bike frame and positioning it between himself and the sow. As a hunter myself, I have played the mental gymnastic of the “what if” game. If a bear surprised me I would hold my bow out like a shield while stabbing with my arrows like giant daggers. It is kind of like the famous quote of Mike Tysons, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”.
Excerpt #2
Colin thought that perhaps the bear needed a more convincing implication for its aggressive behavior. He picked his bike up over his head and hurled it toward the bear, hoping the sprockets or pedals might inflict a painful injury to the bear, convincing it to leave him alone. The bike simply bounced off of the bear and it ominously stepped over Colin’s only remaining means of defending himself.
By now the bear was only a few feet from Colin. It wrapped its paw around his waist and pulled him toward its wide-open mouth. He watched in terror as the bear clamped its enormous jaws onto the side of his abdomen, just above his left hip. Colin could feel his own hot blood pouring down his own skin.
Colin felt helpless, as the giant bear carried him like a dog carrying its favorite toy. He hung from its mouth, suspended by the flesh of his side, as it lumbered toward the edge of the road. It was clearly focused on taking the man into the bushes and killing him there.
As the bear carried Colin the fifty-foot distance off the edge of the road, he kicked his feet, gouged it in the eyes, and twisted and peeled its lips back, trying to force it to drop him. As he reached for the bear's lips again, the bear swiveled its head and chomped onto his hand, fending it away.
Excerpt #3
At about seven p.m., a call came into the local police office. The caller was reporting a dead woman and wanted to have the police come investigate and recover the woman's body. After arriving at the scene the police officers noticed that Barara was in fact dead, and had been buried in a bear's food cache. When a bear hunts a human for food, it kills them then covers the corpse in duff and sticks to keep other animals away from it. They protect these good caches with their lives sometimes and are known to be aggressively defensive of their food sources.
The grizzlies in this area do not have the benefit of a seasonal salmon run like the bears in the Canadian Rockies a short distance away. If they are not strong enough to migrate west to claim and defend a salmon fishing spot, then they have to find food near them. This forces them to wander far and wide in search of enough calories to pack on the weight they will need to survive hibernation. As you can imagine this takes a toll on the bears and creates a desperate situation for older, less mobile bears. Desperate grizzlies rarely make good company to human beings.

The first story about Jeremy reminded me of a conversation I had with my 7yo boy. I'm 6'6" weigh around 235. I played basketball and I competed in judo for several years and I'm a lifelong hunter. My son, of course, thinks I'm invincible. We talked about bears one day. He was convinced i could fight off a bear. I was trying to impress on him the difference in even a formidable man and a bear. I finally told him I'd have just about as much of a chance of whipping a bear as he had whipping me. The look on his face said it all but I think I made my point. Jeremy is a savage.

Just complacency. Imagine going into the woods hundreds of times without any encounters. It's just human nature. I don't even take a handgun as we only have black bears and panthers in my area. No bear spray either. Although after all these bear attack video's I've been watching, I'll probably start again.

Bear spray is cheaper and people don't want to kill the bear just stop the attack. It's not fair going to a place where bears live and carry a deadly weapon.

Oh, no! Missed SBA and everyone again! I'm glad there's three!! Jeremy Evans is one of your best narratives, and one of Jeremy's best fights I'd assume! He survived a grizz sow attack! He's a great hunter, and I remember this fight! He went alone, which his wife made him PRACTICE BEAR SAFETY! He cursed when he realized he surprised that grizzly! That bear ripped into so many parts of Jeremy Evans, everyone including me, view this man a walking miracle! His strong youth saved this man! Atticus, you told this story better than his book, podcasts, even his photos!! Despite his mistakes of not having his bear spray or rifle on the ready! She got him TWICE! But even through his ordeal, and times he accepted death, he lived! Atticus, and friends, Jeremy worked this sow! When he grabbed her vagina, and pulled, (which he thought it was her balls, which he forgot it was a female,) it caused her immense pain which caused loss of bowels! I suffer pain like this, so severe, it will cause one to 💩 on oneself!😳!!! Pain's no joke and I laughed at how your narration took such a hilarious turn! 🤣🤣🤣👍🏿!! Atticus, I couldn't stop laughing at this juncture!! I only imagined being there with you, and everyone else! Because for one thing, you know about how dangerous it is to do what Jeremy did, and at this point, he won the fight, which made me cheer from the inside out! Jeremy's fight for his life had virtually begun! That bear had ripped into Jeremy Evans real good! That bear worked him over from his head almost to his feet!! His head, of course was the worst!!! Jeremy could've lost his VISION. He was scalped, bones crushed tendons ripped, you name it, Jeremy Evans endured it! The story intrigued me so, I now own the Kindle edition! Jeremy is a miracle because he can see his family, and after all the physical therapy, support and love from his family and friends, he has made a tremendous amount of recovery of his body functions! We all know how huge a grizz is especially the long canines and claws, not to mention the strength of this apex predator! I just remember Jeremy's ordeal as if it was my own, or one of my own! Huge thanks to God first, for to me God gives us strength to endure! I relate to Jeremy; I haven't given up myself! I've gone through it, and still is! Then, the people at that lodge! Once Jeremy arrived, they administered him the best first aid they could, and got him to hospital, where they took great care of him! Again, support from family and Jeremy's friends enhanced his survival! This I totally empathize with him. This story of great courage in the face of danger, the fact Jeremy was a hunter, (although he was the hunted in this case,) his youth, vitality, and all the people he encountered along the way, his medical team, and finally his wonderful friends, family, his wife and children, all of these people and God's intervention made this one of the best Scary Bear Attacks episodes ever! I'm very pleased at Atticus' narration! Roaaar!!! 🐻🐻‍❄🐻🐻‍❄🐻🐻‍❄🐻🐻‍❄

Jeremys story should be on the big screen. Forget all the superhero movies. He fought three epic battles and survived to tell the tale. The battle with the beast. The battle to find his way out of the forest. And the battle within himself to recover physically and mentally. Chances of survival are 1 and 7.888 billion because nobody else on earth could have endured the trials that man did. Not even Job

I am amazed he survived and managed to save himself. But sows with their cubs become ferociously protective and she was angry. I am also amazed that he kept his rifle unloaded and the bear spray in his backpack. Not a bright thing to do but he managed to think his way through back to civilization. While I feel horror at what the bear did, I understand the fierce protective love the sow had for her cub as Jeremy had for his daughter. I am glad they both made it.

Yes and if it was fall, that would make the bear even more dangerous as it is probably desperate for food so it will be more predatory. Man-eating bears in colder regions often are like this. Large but very light-weight bears who weren’t able to pack on enough pounds for winter.

Living in or venturing out into the remote wilderness requires the kind grit, fearlessness and toughness that I admit I don't possess. I wonder if hunters are always thinking in the back of their minds that something else might be hunting them too. To me I would always be thinking there could be a bear, mountain lion, or even aggressive moose that might attack me in a nearby vicinity.

Sorry about the super long paragraph. That's just Jeremy's story below, but it got to me. I've had a long week. I'm the most misunderstood person away from YT ever!! I'm going thru a hell I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, and I came to the conclusion that any family or the friends before the ones that are part of my medical team judged me in the worst way. I reached out, and got help by the Grace of God, ALONE! It's difficult enough to trust people! Every time I hear or read Jeremy's story, my hope's renewed. Thank you, Atticus, again for all you do! I wish I could do something, but I'm really fighting, ALONE! I don't have much, because I'm taking a drawer full of meds, and an MD is always poking at me, wanting urine, blood or whatever. But, so was Jeremy and others. I draw strength from all of you, SBA and Atticus! I can't find the words to thank you all! God bless every last one of you! 🐻

You're right! Physically I'm by myself, Cheryl. I don't sit back, and wait. Jesus told the paralytic to 'pick up his mat, and walk. My situation isn't unique by no means. It happens everyday to people. Sadly, those who I share DNA with don't love me. If they did, there's no way I'd be alone like this! I reached out, and got a caregiver. There, I count my blessings and this is my way of 'picking up my mat.' Thank you, Cheryl for your prayers. I do my best here by responding, and actually listening to Atticus' narratives. He and his son are brave! Atticus knows a lot about bears, so does a lot of members and regular commenters. These stories are some of the biggest bear attack stories and in my opinion, Atticus is in the top 5 narrators but to me #1 on Y.Tube. I noticed that a lot of Canadians are in these attacks as well as Alaskans. The last story was tragic, wasn't it?😥@@CherylPix62

When I was on patrol and later in crime scene, I'd see people so mangled up and broken I'd look at the mess I wondered how could they be fixed.? I never envied the surgeons and other trauma staffers at the seemingly impossible repair job ahead. Bear attack wounds sound very similar to bad MV wrecks especially with chest and head and face bashed and smashed. The stories make me much more careful as I'm on blood thinners, so what these guys survived I'd bled out in minutes. While on this topic here's a free Public Service Announcement for everyone>> besides prescription blood thinners, here's other things that thin your blood.....aspirin, ibuprofen/Advil, and alcohol. Check any OTC or other prescription meds for blood thinning. I carried a mini trauma and blood clotting kit in my crime scene sling bag. After retiring I kept the habit of carrying a trauma kit and a sling bag wherever I go. Take care and think ahead no matter how little you believe today's threat is. I've seen hundreds of people who never dreamed in the morning, that their life would change forever later that day.
@_smurfitude

Stay safe! It's no life for some survivors of trauma! Jeremy's story really shook me to the core! I was hoping all victims mentioned in the stories Atticus selected for us would be survival ones but sadly, Barbara didn't make it, neither did David Lertzman, who was briefly mentioned. He was pushed off a cliff by a sow after his attack. @giggachad5530 mentioned sharks, who are sometimes mentioned here. Sharks are worse because of their location, the ocean. Many people call attackers like the ones via land, Landsharks. We all must be careful! All wild animals such as these can truly change our lives in the worst way!

Jeremy may as well have been a "hardcore" or "extreme" or "Japanese death match" style professional wrestler like in the 1990s where people got literally slammed on real barbed wire, fire, thumbtacks, through wooden tables on concrete. I did some of that in minor leagues or small promotions and I could never remember the whole ordeal like Jeremy .... Kudos Jeremy! 🤯

I am constantly amazed at why so many people seem surprised when a human is predated upon by animals... The animals can learn to be wary of humans, but realistically, without a weapon we are pretty defenseless animals and part of the circle of life. I believe firearms are the best defense against bears and am more ok with someone shooting in self defense than I am in trapping and killing a bear for seeing us as food..

THIS FIRST STORY WAS TOTALLY SO UNBELIEVABLE. THIS WAS A BEAUTIFUL, MIRACLE FROM OUR GOD FATHER ALMIGHTY. THIS MAN WAS SUPPOSE TO LIVE AND WASN'T HIS TIME . I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT GOD GAVE HIM HIM THE COURAGE AND STRENGTH TO SURVIVE AND TO MAKE HIS OWN WAY TO HELP. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT HE LIVED ,THAT MOST WOULD HAVE DIED. YOU ARE A HERO AND YOUR STORY WILL LIVE ON FOR OTHERS TO READ FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. GOD FATHER ALMIGHTY WILL ALWAYS BE BY YOUR SIDE AND YOUR FAMILY. ✝️✝️✝️💯🆓♎🕎🛐😇

I don’t know that I would survive any of these attacks. I would like to think I would but just can’t say. It’s obvious that proper planning and protective equipment is very important. What I can’t imagine besides the physical scaring but the mental scaring would be just as bad if not worse.

I'm very sorry what happened to 68 year old Barbara Collister She was complacent and ran smack into a huge grizzly!! This apex predator cached Barbara's body, so this was a predator. They found a older sow bear who turned out to be Barbara's killer. They called her death in the final analysis, a defensive attack. David Lertzman met his demise just 24 kilometers away. She was alone, no bear spray or a firearm. Actually, Barbara should've been accompanied with someone. She was hiking in bear country just as Mr. Lertzman was. Although all these stories were pretty scary, where Jeremy was very traumatized, Colin was hell bent on being as strong in all ways! I do hold high regard to both Jeremy & Colin by the way they survived but Barbara's was indeed tragic, so was David Lertzman. My condolences go out to both Barbara, David and their families. 😥🙏🏿❤

In answering your questions you have at the end of each of your videos one of the questions was whether we thought the outcome of this situation would’ve been any different if she had bear spray-i’ve watched enough of these bear attacks to know that you cannot count on bear spray every time and you also asked if we thought this lady having a fire arm would’ve brought on a different outcome And I say absolutely yes to that one. Bringing a fire arm doesn’t guarantee that you will win against a bear every time but it sure stacks The odds of surviving A bear attack in your favor much more. Animal lovers don’t want to have to kill any animals if they don’t have to but there are times when it’s either you or them, These are the only choices.I don’t even have to think twice on what choice I would make.

Great insights Susie! The risk in relying on a firearm is that the safety derived from a pistol and bear spray are inversely related. The CLOSER the bear is the more likely you are to hit/kill it with a firearm. The CLOSER the bear is to you, the less likely bear spray will have a chance to fog out enough to protect you. It is a mix bag of nuts either way! Take care!

I live in central BC and last year a bear was trapped because a man who lives 1 kilometre from me was feeding it. On the other hand, a neighbour 2 doors down feed the bears their garbage every week. Why are some people so stupid? They should be forced to take training and pay fines for endangering people. There’s a lot of kids here walking, biking and skateboarding. No food, no bears. Oh yes, I almost forgot…I live in city limits.

One thing that always stands out is that one little detail that people miss and it costs them big time, my pa taught me the 7 P's (Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.) and to quadruple check every detail. Man this first story; what a trip, my thoughts are first the Sow was being aggressive defensive as is normal, I think the Sow kept up the attack because the defensive went away and full agro took over, the cub probably never crossed it's mind while in battle. The not being prepare thing, rifle not loaded and out, spry not at the ready, huge mistakes. The absolute bullheadedness, toughness, intelligence and heart the man has is down right amazing. The sensitive part he grabbed was probably a tit, considering there was a cub and yeah I think she will remember that encounter for a long long time. The second story the same undercut of a missed critical check of the item(s) list; the bear was hunting and found an easy target, not the first time a bear hinted a human. The bear spray may have increased his chance at less injuries; but one never knows how a bear will react. The shock to the knife wound; kind of makes it seem like spray, which would be unexpected like the knife, may have fended off the bear.

Though creepy, these stories are so enjoyable to listen to. 😊 Why do bears often go for the face and eat you even though you are alive? They seem to be a bit of an assholes.

They go for the face, or so I have heard on other programs, because that is where they go for in fights with other bears. So as to "Neutralize" the opponent in it's most formidable tool of combat, it's teeth and powerful jaws. When this happens to a human it seems a bit of overkill, but I guess the bear does what has been working for it. Yes, lol, these attacks do seem a bit rude dont they? "Pardon me Sir or Mam, but could you please wait until I have expired before consuming me?". For some reason they are often quite inconsiderate...

'Colin tried to soothe the bear.' I bet everyone laughed at your sentence! But, as Jeremy's story, Colin decided to live, but unlike Jeremy, this bear was eating him alive! A pocket knife, given to him by his dad and mfg by Buck Knives saved Colin's life! 'Now you are bleeding too, bear!' I clapped and laughed as again, the pain was so bad the bear defecated and urinated on himself! Again, pain will make one lose body functions, now that steak sized chunk this bear tore out his side was gruesome! It showed organs underneath (Kidney/adrenals) Where Addicus gets these photos are as good a mystery as the stories! Well, Colin didn't have much more than that knife that his father gave him, but he didn't let fear cloud his thinking, which saved his life!! He drove that knife in that grizzly's neck and made him bleed so bad, the bear had to turn him loose!

Most Canadians don’t carry a gun . Bear spray , many do depends on location..I’m not sure if a charging grizzly would stop if hit with bear spay they cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time . Hitting the bear with bear spray you have be Patient in order to hit the bear with the spray for one thing you have to wait till the bear is within 20 feet. That takes nerve of steel to hold off shooting it to early.

How do you go into bear country without a side arm and a fixed blade knife on your person at all times? This seems it would be second nature to an experienced outdoorsman in that area

Jeremy story is horrific. But although horrific how could an experienced hunter not load his rifle and carry it next to him in addition, how could he not have his bear spray close to him. In addition how could an experience hunter not carry at least a 500 sw across his chest in addition how could he not carry a Glock 20 10 mm at his side. Not to be mean but stupid is as stupid does. I always carry a garmin satellite phone in addition to all mentioned weapons with me in back country and I’m not experienced hunter. What’s upsetting is that he travelled alone and many woodsmen do same and die
