I live in Port Coquitlam, about 20 to 30 minutes away from Maple Ridge. We have a lot of black bears here. I see them often, early in the morning as I make my way to work. There are things people have to make sure to be aware of, like using metal binders to keep the garbage closed, prune fruit trees when they ripen, and try to minimize any other attractants that can bring them too close. Bears will always be here, as they always were here...long before people starting moving out this way. If you see one, walk as far from it as possible. Don't try to engage with it. Common sense stuff. And for God's sake..DON'T RUN

As to the 14 shots from the 10 mm not surprising if only 180 grain fmj which seems to be the case; ammo carried does not seem to be dangerous game of 200 or 220 grain hardcast ammo; info as presented on this video

Thankfully all OK. Hope the man is recovering fully and there was help. Have to say, Maple Ridge is in the Canadisn province of British Columbia. We don't have "state" parks. Details matter from the point of accuracy.

I work in that park, and part of my job is to educate about bear safety. By leashing pets and staying on designated trails (where bears expect humans to be) you minimize the risks.

I don’t usually comment as I really don’t know much about hunting. Suffice it to say I am a native New Yorker, who has lived in Vermont for thirty years. I am a pacifist and am a true animal lover. I do not approve of hunting or hunters unless one needs to eat so I rarely feel sorry for anyone who is attacked by a bear while hunting. What has caused me to write was the account of the half brothers who chased a black bear with their dog pack. Being a dog lover as well I immediately had an intense dislike for these 2 men. Not only were they torturing the local bears but they are placing their dogs in rather unnecessary danger and teaching them some really bad habits. It is not hard to believe these guys becoming Trump supporters like so many other of their fellow countrymen.

I live close by in Abbotsford BC and I don't know why people are unaware that Dogs are bait for Bears. You did another story recently about a couple were killed by a Grizzly Bear in September of this year. This couple were on a trail near the town of Banff Alberta accompanied with their dog and they paid with their lives. Leave your Dog at home and Carry Bear Spray and a Loud Sounding push button marine Horn with the pressurized air a cannisters. Very Effective...

I don’t live in bear country but live close to a national park and every spring we get visited by bears. We get notices that a mom and her cubs are on a bike path, or there’s bears in someone’s back yard. One year they were in the kids school yard. I’m scared to death, when I come home at night I don’t get out of my car until I’ve checked for bears 🐻

Pet and dog owners often show insensitivity toward others, as well as the environment and wilderness. They impose on others' freedoms by granting excessive liberties to their pets. This behavior needs to change!

First: Canada has no state parks- there are no states. Only provinces and federal. The next thing is people are not wildlife smart within a city. They venture out to the edges of the city thinking it’s safe because there are trails. Trailhead signage about wild life should be posted at all of the trailheads. Type of wildlife, how to handle encounters, keeping dogs on a leash at all times (which is a rule in Canadian,parks by the way). If you are new to the area, talk to locals first, educate yourself. Canada is still part wild part and part tamed. Even the big cities like Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary will see wildlife actually enter the cities. Moose, bear, deer, cougars, weasel, lynx, coyotes and wolves have been seen in these cities on the periphery. Find out what wild life is by your city before you venture on a path. This is not Europe, or England. Wild country side still exists.

I don’t believe this would’ve been a black bear. Black bears do not attack people. Also, in BC it’s a “provincial” park, not a state park.
@RalphHify12 сағат бұрын
Black bears attack more people than grizzly bears. There have been black bear attacks on people in Maple Ridge before. In this case the bear carcass has been retrieved & identified as a black bear.
@mariamead444417 сағат бұрын
It should be a given by now that garbage, bird feeders, pet food left outside, are all going to attract bears and that bears, especially with cubs, although amusing to look at, WILL KILL YOU depending on their mood. In addition, you may have picked a wilderness area to live in because of it’s natural beauty etc. but that doesn’t mean you have any automatic rights to be hiking, hunting or fishing in all that scenery. Many dangerous critters really don’t want you there, so it’s your responsibility, and yours alone, to be prepared to defend yourself. So do it, or potentially face a world of hurt.

Total plot twist for me! When you said it was unknown if he usually carried bear spray I assumed he did not survive to let us know so I was prepared for the worst! It was a very pleasant surprise. This story is a well needed reminder about dogs off leash. I always thought of it as I trained my dog well in recall so a bit of off leash is a reward, but dogs are still unpredictable. They have a natural instinct to want to protect and even leashed it can be a challenge to withdraw. For my dogs safety and mine I will leave off leash to my property and dog parks. Great video!

I live very near Maple Ridge and you have your facts wrong about bears encroaching on us. The populations here are growing so fast PEOPLE are encroaching on wildlife habitat! There is a video floating around of 3 women getting approached by a black bear and it actually making contact and smelling her. People need to be educated and carry bear spray!
@scarybearattacks18 сағат бұрын
I agree with you! We spread out when bear populations were low and now they are moving back in around us. The point is that people need to know how to handle living with bears in their neighborhoods and still be safe. Thanks for your point of view and be safe out there!

Very scary story considering it is an encounter so close to a city. In BC we are always in bear country. Thus when one is walking or hiking one should always carry bear spray and also keep their dogs on a leash. I'm pleased both Paul and his dog survived the attack. Congratulations to the three fishermen who came to his rescue too. Very brave of them to actually attack the bear with just a fillet knife.

It would terribly difficult to try to imagine what I would do given the scenario! The fishermen were indeed very brave!

I loved living in Canada except for their restrictions on firearms
I myself live in bear territory and have been close to bears. Some all black or dark brown cinnamon colored older and younger and have been mock charged a few times. But in every case did not get all excited and freak out. Just ignored them and yelled at them and they just walked away. Running is a big mistake. Because just like running with a dog it excited the dog. I remember someone telling me s bear cannot run down a hill very fast. Not as fast of course as if they are running on flat ground. But still faster then a human also running down hill. And if you see a bear and it looks like it wants to come after you and you have a back pack or a hat on or gloves. Take it off and throw it away from yourself behind or off to side of the bear. It gets distracted to go after what you just threw and walk away in the other direction. Most who see a bear do not get attacked by them. But bear chewing someone up gives the impression if you see a bear you will be getting mauled.

Yet another fine piece of content Addicus! Unfortunately, when we spread out into rural and forested areas we bring our messes with us (garbage). It's nearly impossible not to. We get used to bears, and bears get used to us. Dangerous situations will occur. Dogs typically protect by nature. I honestly can't fault the dog, the man, or the bear. It was the wrong place, at the wrong time. Thank God for the nearby fishermen. Christ was a fisherman 😊

Good decision. Why would one let a dog off leash in an area with bears? Even if there aren’t bears, like where I live in Texas, there might be skunks, porcupines, venomous snakes, juvenile wildlife. All of these are bad news when it comes to unleashed dogs.

This was only six days ago. I find it difficult to believe that this video could have been produced in that short amount of time. There seems to be a lot of these animal attack videos that are not true and just done for sensantionalism.

Here is an easy way to verify the facts I put in my episodes. Just google the location, date and if available the attack victims name. Add "bear attack" to the end and you will find the same resources I use to write episodes. I would never disrespect an attack victim by sensationalizing their tragedy with anything but the most accurate account I can find a source for. I have found conflicting or mistaken information in sources before but I do the best I can in this regard. Take care and be safe, especially in bear country!
