You’re pretty awesome, Justin! I don’t watch very many eBay sellers anymore. I made a lot of bad purchases in my first year based on unrealistic expectations presented by a number of hype resellers. (Beanies and squishmallows, anyone??) I’m clearing out many things that won’t sell. Space and peace of mind is more important than lost money. You, though, consistently provide quality content, no hype, just facts. I appreciate you.

I wash all clothing. It's rare to get a piece of clothing to flip that does not stink. In the beginning of re-selling I sold and mailed an item that was not washed prior, and I regret it and learned the hard way. All Goodwill stores clothing stink and they spray a suppose to be nice spray on it and it just makes the smell worse, even yard sale clothing stinks. The only clothes I don't wash are new with tag clothing, they usually don't stink if your lucky and you cannot wash a clothing item with tags anyhow...Seller beware, wash used clothing just put it on quick wash cycle and hang dry to save on power if need be. I'm pretty good at washing wool and silk items so they do not shrink.

I've been selling for over 20+ years on & off , and now that I'm retired, I 'm selling on eBay full-time and I am STILL learning so much from you! Your subtle sense of humor is hilarious. Sometimes in between your nuggets of wisdom & knowledge, you will say something (subtly) so funny and I laugh out loud and my husband will ask me "what's so funny?".....and I reply "It's Ebay Justin!" Justin, I'm super weird and I will list garbage (old clothes or electronics) I have in my home just to see if it sells and is worth it later versus just donating. I find that this is a good way to learn and then I can make better decisions when sourcing. Meaning, it is better to make mistakes with personal items versus the items you spend actual money on the resell.

One of the things I enjoy selling is hats. I do get them sometimes with a spot or mark on them, or maybe they're a bit dirty on the inside from normal wear. What I use is some regular blue dawn and a toothbrush. I've never had anything not come out when using this, but I also avoid the hats that are very badly stained or dirty. This has worked as well on plushies, even with white fur. I picked up a bag of plushies at my local Goodwill for one to give to my sister, and one of the other plush was dirty/stained yellow, so I tried cleaning it with dawn just to see and you'd never know now how dirty it was!

@@brendatomlinson I think the rule is actually the item should be clean, not that you, as the seller, must wash it. I usually make sure it looks clean and then do a “smell test”. Most people wash used clothes after buying, and before they wear it. I don’t want to waste water and electricity washing if it isn’t necessary.

Accounting rules require reporting of inventory costs at the LOWER of the actual cost (doesn’t matter when it was purchased) or current market value. In other words, the IRS does not allow you to write off a higher amount than your cost just because an item has appreciated over time. The cost is still the most you can write off. Hope this helps. Thanks for the great videos!
@teresavanmeter3409
@teresavanmeter3409 3 ай бұрын
By that description than what an item sells for is the declared fair market value. (what someone is willing to pay is what the market bares.) So by putting your COG on a personal item as what it sold for would be correct? (assuming you paid more and/or had it for a certain length of time and are unable to recall the original purchase price)
@kylecameron3140
@kylecameron3140 3 ай бұрын
@@teresavanmeter3409 If you are selling items at a loss, the COG is the actual amount you paid for the item. The revenue is the amount the buyer paid. If you don't have a receipt you cannot prove to the IRS what you paid for the item. In my opinion, the safest way to proceed is to find the receipt and record the actual cost, or use zero cost without a receipt.

In a recent video you recommended setting automated feedback to be sent only after the buyer has left you (the seller) positive feedback. This made a lot of sense to me, so I made the change. Fortunately, my shop has not had much of a summer slow down this year, and I had three $500 days in a row - until yesterday when I had less than $100 in sales. I noticed that this was also when the count of my transactions awaiting feedback reached 100. Since my sales were even worse today, I reset my automated feedback back to when the buyer has paid, and guess what? The sales started rolling! Of course, this could all be coincidence, but I'm not taking my chances to switch back.

My thoughts process on allowing returns...if returns are easy and free for buyers, I think they will not put as much consideration into how sure they will need/want the item. That assurance might result in more impulse buying wiith buyer remorse attached. As in, "I don't know if this will work for me, or fit me, but I can always return it". This is MY logic as a buyer. Is my theory correct? Who knows...
@la6136
@la6136 2 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct this is exactly why I don’t offer returns. I only want buyers who know 100% that they want the item. Otherwise you will get a bunch of buyers remorse returns from my experience

For negative feedback I look at it this way, if a customer sees 50 or 100 really positive comments and then sees one or two negative comments I would hope they would look past those knowing that it might just be a more difficult customer or a mistake in the mail or the shipping not that I'm selling erroneous product or bad services

The question about multiple offers for the same amount on an item is really a couple of questions. I have had this happen when listing highly sought after Zippo lighters from a private collection. There are people who have alerts set up such that I sometimes get offers in SECONDS after I list these, and some of them MULTIPLE offers, sometimes in the hundreds of dollars. (1) You can pick and choose among the offers (2) If it's an auction and somebody places a bid before you take action on offers, all of the offers are auto-declined. (3) You have to decide if ANY of the offers are acceptable to you before you can decide anything. You can absolutely counter, but I try to be fair and respond to the best of the offers that came in first. Say if there was first an offer for $50, then two offers for $200, and a 4th offer for $250. I'd respond first to the two for $200 and either counter or decline. The one who offered $50 is probably some dealer trying to lowball me, so I would just decline that one. Then I would respond to the $250 and either accept or counter.

On the question about how much to sell before going full time, make sure to specify that when you say it costs $10k a month, then you need to make $10k a month on eBay to shift, that is $10k PROFIT, NOT just sales. You'll need to make sure you make a scaled estimate of expenses for shipping materials, etc. You must also account for self-employment tax (i.e., YOU will be paying BOTH halves of your Social Security and Medicare, where your employer is currently paying half of each.) ADDITIONALLY, you must account for employer paid benefits like health insurance, vision, AD&D, dental, life insurance, and you will also lose any employer paid 401(k) retirement plan matching funds. You should account for that as well.)

THANK YOU for telling folks they don't need to wash things. I have an allergy to synthetic fragrances and it is so frustrating buying clothes online to then have to go through a process to get the "clean" scent out of them. I know they have good intentions but it's easier to let the buyer clean the item. Also some items need special handling and it could cause more wear to the item than necessary to wash it. If its gross or like actually smelly, then yeah. But otherwise, no. Also, putting something out in the sun for an afternoon goes a long way to make something smell fresh and clean again! Little rant over lol.

Hi Justin, I've been watching your channel for about a year and have learned a lot! I've been using Flipwise for about 2 months now and love it! Will you be adding the ability to put in information for drafts in the future? That's one feature I have noticed would be very helpful so that I don't have to wait to attach info to the listing until it's actually listed (i.e. purchase price, purchase location, storage location). Thank You! Todd
@justinresells
@justinresells 3 ай бұрын
Unfortunately eBay does not make Drafts available via their API. If we could, we would! Instead we will allow you to add inventory directly to Flipwise instead of having to wait until it is listed on eBay. (And eventually allow you to list directly from Flipwise if you want!) This will allow you to add photos along with your acquisition data and storage location and expenses. We hope to have this functionality available later this summer.

Hey Justin - I’ve just received another extra charge from UPS for “Additional Handling” for a longer item (this time a baseball bat - 35”) - an extra $12.95 on top of the $9.99 shipping. They clearly show that it’s not postage, but an extra handling fee. It’s killing my shipping cost on these items. It seems clear now that this is an extra fee for long times, but if it’s a standard fee, why isn’t eBay pricing this in when I purchase a label with the correct dimensions?

Invariably, when I finally list death pile items, they sell fast for good money. Shame on me for not listing stuff. I try to only pick items where I can make at least $25. I do sell some on consignment, where if I can make $5, it's OK.With consignment, no pictures, no listings, no pictures, just drop it off and they handle selling the items. Now if you think eBays fees are high, wait until you see consignment fees. It's commonly 50/50 (50% goes to them). I do respond to all offers, even low ball offers. I just respond with what I will accept, and I call it "best and final offer" and I mean it. About half the time low ballers will step up to my offer, sometimes they just go away.

Q: How do you price items that you've purchased in a lot? Do you spread out the cost of the lot evenly across all of the items within the lot regardless if some items are more valuable than others? Or do you do a proportion/weighed cost on each item? TYIA! Your channel has been immensely helpful.

Not every platform actually, will sync with the IRS, so you may have to manually calculate.. If you inherited a bunch of inventory ... It generally has no cost basis... so those revenues are inherited & calculated differently... as an inheritance

Hi Justin- I’m surprised to find eBay allows sellers to simply lift images from other listings with the “Sell One Like This” function. I’ve been selling vintage t-shirts from my personal collection, and I’ve been very methodical about what to list and I space these listings out rather than flood the niche that looks for these shirts. I just shipped a 1997 live tour t shirt that band members silkscreened by hand, for a hefty amount but someone has copied my listing with my photo, except what they’re offering isn’t authentic or even vintage, but print-on-demand shirts. My photo isn’t even that flattering of the product and this other seller can’t possibly extract a print worthy image from my photo…. So if I can’t stop them from ripping off my product photos, is eBay likely to respond if I report the seller for bootlegging their product? It also really undermines the value of what I just sold, and if I was the buyer I might be tempted to return the authentic shirt for a refund and order the knockoff for a fraction of the price. What can I do?

You mentioned it is not necessary to wash clothing that looks and smells good after purchasing. Ebay has a policy that all clothing needs to be noted in the description. The 20:11 item has been cleaned according to Ebay policy. My description reads: all used clothing has been laundered according to the eBay policy. I wash all purchased. It might look and smell fine now, but after being in a zipped bag, it could change.

I think its true that when you list more you get more views/sales... I took several days off and then listed 7 items and netted 3 sales(previously listed) in the same time that it took me to post those 7. So yes and no. Maybe I got lucky maybe I pleased the algorithm. who knows. I need to work my pile again lol its been a while since i listed. I just don't have the pile of inventory than some have to list as frequently.

I sold a shrink wrap machine, and shipped by FedEx freight. It wasn't a great experience. I used the buyers account, and didn't have a way to figure out the weight, I guessed 360lbs. Lucky I had a forklift at the house, because apparently it was 500 lbs. They re classed it and tried to charge the customer 1800 for the shipment, I don't know exactly how it resolved itself, since it wasn't my problem, not my account etc. I would try a different freight company if I needed again

Justin - I heard you talk about getting a post removed or having a ding on your account because the item was recalled. Does that mean that we should research every item to see if there’s a recall on it? That may be a problem if you have lots of listings.

Hi Justin, just to let you know, eBay has a used clothing policy. You advised that it really doesn't matter if you wash the clothes or not unless they have some sort of odor or something (I'm paraphrasing). Anyway, that is incorrect. Per eBay policy, look up used clothing policies, and it will tell you that you must wash ALL used clothing before listing. You should also have a statement in your listing indicating that you did wash it per eBay standards. You might want to correct this with your followers, especially the newer ones. Thanks for all you do. Jp

I’ve heard you say to go ahead and list out of season items. Does that mean that ebay will put you back to the top of search as a new listing every month as they renew the item. I don’t want to be in no man’s land when the best season rolls around. Also, I read that ebay has certain listing errors that will cause an item to never show up in search. Can you get that error defined by Ebay so it can be corrected. It has happened to me a few times for items that have good sell through, clear photos and relentless editing to try to find the problem. 2 Years, no views, scroll forever. Thanks for your uniquely no-spin presentation!

I've been getting more ramped up in the collectible business and as it's mostly a hobby, I was wondering if I'm not technically a "business" entity with a EIN tax ID etc...I have a business but it's not for "this" purpose....I've liquidated portions of my collection and the sales # is obviously pretty high. I'm wondering how I can reduce my tax burden just because I liquidated a portion of my collectibles ( and then bought different collectibles ). TLDR : Are deductibles only for business entities?

On the four items with calculated shipping, I've had this happen but ebay always combines the weight of the four and often OVER-charges the buyer so I end up giving a refund. This seller should look at their shipping settings. I'm not expert enough to know off the top what to check, but I'm betting that something in their settings did this.

To the question about mentoring. I personally would resist that because of the number of grifters who came out of the woodwork to train people to sell on Amazon, and FLOODED Amazon with cheap Chinese made crap from Alibaba and Temu that has in large part displaced quality, name brand products. Amazon responded by making it extremely difficult for 3rd party sellers EXCEPT FOR somehow sellers located in China. I stopped selling on Amazon in 2021-2022 for that reason.
