We recently hosted a chat in our online classroom to find out what people’s biggest fears were about starting their business. We had many varied and interesting responses but there was one issue that kept coming up - formulators are scared of non-compliance with cosmetics regulations.
In this podcast episode Gemma and Lorraine discuss what global cosmetic regulations are, what they mean to cosmetic formulators, how important they are and the steps that you can take to make sure you comply with cosmetics regulations in your region of the world.

The cosmetic regulations are the most feared step in creating the natural skincare, for myself as a formulator. I am very passionate about my vision, ethos and products, but the anxiety about being compliant to the regulation is overwhelming. Thank you, Lorainne for explaining system in the simple steps. I am glad that globally we are becoming closer to harmonizing these regulations to protect our customers as well as our own business. Looking forward to new podcast!

I found this podcast to be enlightening. It has given me something to think about when it comes to defining what angle I want to come from with my natural, organic products. I was disturbed about some things and this podcast did indeed de-mystify a few things I found troubling. I am excited about enrolling the Organic Skincare class in July! I believe It will assist me in entering the global marketplace with confidence abiding by the principles outlined in this podcast. Thank you, Genna and Lorraine.

I think I am going to listen this few times since it is very usufull to me. My country is not EU but we are going to implement new rules that include PIF and etc. So this is something new to me. I wold like to go some safety asserz course since I pharmacist. can you reccomend some?

from what understood is from this podcast is that if you want to take formulation seriously you need to comply with the EU cosmetic regulation right? however, do I need to still comply with the regulation if I'm just selling a little product to get a little pocket money for myself? @formulaBotanica

I've been looking high and low for an assessor for my ayurvedic hair care products. I had my formula checked with an herbalist in the UK but can't find an assessor!! Would a lab report help?

How do you become an accredited Safety Assessor within EU? I make anhydrous products, low-risk microbiological, so can I draw up this Safety Assessment/CSPR if I am accredited?

If you're wanting to become an assessor you would usually need a degree in a scientific subject such as chemistry or pharmacy. We don't teach people to become assessor's so I'd recommend looking into the required qualifications and experience needed. :)

Hello and thank you for the great info I have a request Your school is global online school Student all over the world are part of your team Than why when talking about some very great info emphasis is only on European countries , and other countries regulations are just superficially touched Pls include all the regions , I can understand it’s not possible to talk about each country but being global school pls try to cover as much as possible ,other parts of world too , we need info too and are equally overwhelmed about the process Thank you Sangeeta, USA

Hi Sangeeta, thank you for listening to our podcast episode. We cover the legislation in 48 countries in our courses. However, as we stress in our courses, as well as on this free podcast, we feel that cosmetic formulators should strive to meet the highest legislative standards when they create their products. Not only will this approach make them more competitive, but it will also allow them to sell all over the world. The cosmetic regulations in the USA are weak, which is why so many unpreserved and poorly formulated products are available on the market. There is no requirement for microbial testing, or even formal assessment, before products are brought to market. We explain this in detail in our courses and also touch on it in this podcast. Furthermore, it is very likely that other countries are likely to harmonise in the future (as we also discuss in the podcast), which is why any formulator should carefully consider whether they want to prepare themselves now or find themselves playing catch-up later. I'm sure you appreciate that we're not going to cover the legislative requirements for all other regions of the world on our podcast. However, should you choose to enrol with us at Formula Botanica, then we will certainly highlight the differences between the main cosmetics regulations that our students deal with - including those in the USA.
