The pull cord on our 3HP Briggs powered Troybilt Rototiler pulled completely out of the recoil when the recoil spring rotted away at the end. Watch us repair it!

Great job! I had done one of these many years ago & had long since forgot, but you refreshed my memory. By the way I like your old tiller. Those old tillers were an iron horse & would never wear out.

Thanks for the video. I have the same machine. I have had it for 35 now. Broke the cord for the first time today. Made a mess of everything. I had to rewind the spring from start to finish. Then feed the cord through. Everything you did in the video is what I had to do. Even the way you had to feed the cord. A great video. Cheers and thanks. It will get me back in the garden tomorrow.👍👍

Didn’t like the video at first because there was no audio but after watching several others this one was very easy to follow and the most helpful.

Thank you for taking time to create this video on the older style of Briggs & Stratton recoil starter. I had that exact problem with the tip breaking on the spring. Just what I needed to get an old Chore Master rototiller running.

Dude, thats the hard way. Put the pulley in place and secure it with the tabs. Put the spring through the housing and hook one end to the pulley. Wind the spring in by turning the pulley, being sure to grab the end before it goes inside and hook it on the housing slot. Keep winding the pulley until it is maxed out. Let loose until the rope lines up with the hole in the shroud. Tie the knot and its done. Oh, and never use all the tabs that hold the pulley in. You only need two or three. All you are doing is wasting the tabs because they can only be bent so many times before they break.

I have just used this advice to easily fix my recoil starter spring(exact same "older" type as in video) on which the inner pawl had completely snapped off, reshaping the broken end on a fine grinding wheel, And it worked like a charm, the only two things that are to be noted is pushing the rope through to knot it on the plastic pulley isnt easy...Micro line up with the pulley held with mole grips (but Gently). And rewinding the spring enough times to fully retract a long starter rope, Take care not to cut yourself on the housing edge as you wind tension in the spring before attaching the Rope. My Opinion (for what its worth) is Jim B has come up with a good alternative if you like me struggled with attaching the tang to the plastic spring retainer without the spring forcefully springing out. Thanks for posting the video!

I broke those pins that you were talking about. Do you have any ideas of how I might be able to fix that without the pins? Can’t find the housing to buy anywhere. Thnx

@@tomtaylor4686 I am semi retired these days. Years ago a company called Rotary used to make a repair clip. Not sure if they are available now or not. It was just a L shaped plastic clip that snapped onto the housing standoff and held the pulley in. I have also seen one that someone drilled the standoff in a few places and put a long screw through it and held the pulley in. Wasn’t pretty but it worked.

@@jimb1786 Thank you so much for your reply. You really helped me out a lot with that suggestion. That company Rotary is still in business. I appreciate you taking the time to answer!

Dude thank you so much, Mine came apart when I was replacing the Pull cord that was old and broke on me mid start! This is awesome.

Yup - only use two of the spool retaining tabs. - The other two are meant for when the originals break off, which they do after a few times. Slightly older Briggs recoil starters had individual tabs that were screwed on - very nice - so they "improved" it to the bent tab method - saved a few bucks and charged people more.

would you be able to show on another video how the carburetor throttle and governor linkages are setup. I have an engine just like that but I have not found the model anywhere stamped on it. But I can tell that is was once white and it is a Briggs. My engine looks exactly like that.

great video very efficient , i would like to mention do not bend all 4 tabs down. only 2. so you have 2 spare because they will break. the tabs do not need to be tight on the real or it will not turn and before you put the re-coil cover on dribble some oil into the little hole on the end of the starter clutch.
