This is the exact pull starter I was looking for. There are many on here that do not correspond to the one I am rewinding. Very good video.

Bravo! Your 12 year-old video just showed me all the tricks needed to get my old tiller going again after it stripped the plastic pulley. So helpful to find out that the spring can be filed to get it to lock in the slot again - I used a small triangular file to notch the end on both sides. And your guide to install the spring first, then the pulley - great! Thanks so much.👍👍

Oh man, thank you so much! I had to replace the plastic pulley and did not know what I was going to do or how to do it. Plus, you showed many other things that I needed to do to stop the screeching on other machines! Just perfectly explanatory with accompanying video made this easy to understand. You sir, have a gift. Thank you so much!

Thanks so much! You covered every possible problem! I just bought an old snapper to restore and it has all this old tech on the pull cord, and the cord does not retract well, and the clutch does not engage anymore, all of this will help me get er going again ! Motor runs well, for its age, it is a 12 horse I/C. quiet motor. Can't wait to fix er up as my backup mower. You are the man. I could not live in Canada, too cold for too long. Been there in August before, Nestor Falls, cold nights in august! Good fishing though!

The best guide on here by far. Forget other vids that have you was around with screws and cable ties. This way is far easier and actually works! Also, the piece on the end that walks through the pull start cord replacement. The '6 turns' instruction was invaluable to get the spring tension just right. Thanks very much.

Great tutorial. Exactly what I needed. I watched BEFORE I started the project and as a result was able to avoid pulling the spring out at all. The whole operation took less than ten minutes, including the removal and replacement of the pull/rewind enclosure. Total time from when the cord broke to having a running lawnmower -- including a trip to the hardware store one mile away, watching your tutorial, and doing the repair -- was less than an hour. Many thanks!

This video saved me time and money ! I was winding the rope backwards. I set the spring in place, worked the pulley end onto the spring.. then wound up spring tension a little bit more, and finally got the rope in place. Old 1988 Briggs 12hp IC engine. Snapper mower, think the belt is fused to the drive pulley, as the blade turns the engine over,, so something is stuck in place.

Great informative video - Thanks - Today I worked on a 41 year old starter on a 5 HP Tiller - and reinstalled the starter spring and went ahead a put a new rope in it . Gave $50.00 for it for my mom 15 years ago and she used it fir 5 years and when she quit making a garden - she told if I wanted to come and get it and I did . Rest I'd history ... thanks you helped me get the original stater cover on it now ....

Awesome video! I found a "free" lawnmower yesterday with a broken cord. The assembly of my coil was different than yours, but the principle was the same. The part about being able to shorten a damaged coil and reshape it was extremely useful as I kinked the coil twice on the end trying to get it back in before figuring it out. Now that I got a working lawnmower I'm gonna go mow the lawn. Thanks!

David, thank you for the great video/help. You were spot on about the challenge of hooking the reel to the inner part of the spring. For what it's worth, I used a nylon wire tie through the same hole in the housing where the outer part of the spring hooks. This helped hold the spring in place while I hooked the inner part to the reel. Once in place and secured with the tabs, I cut the nylon tie and pulled it out of the housing. Hope this helps.
