Absolutely a great demonstration! My husband watched this and hurried out to his shed to install his pull rope! Every detail makes it simple enough...I could have installed this!

My - That's a vintage unit. Within just a few years, Briggs began making that starter case out of one stamped piece - no removable eyelet, bent-over sheet metal spool retaining tabs - a real PITA. This one is lovely - everything unscrews neatly.

Thanks for making and posting this video!!! It's great to see what to expect when disassembling something, if you've never done it before. Your other videos helped me rebuild the carb (Thanks for that too). It was a bummer to pull the starter cord right off on the first pull after all that hard work. But your vid got me fixed back up right away. Gave my hand me down tiller new life. Thanks!!

@snaponjohn100 u use a size that will allow the cord to go back in all the way. usually a 4.5 to 5.5 # for this engine

Great video. Any advice on how to remove the white plastic pulley the rope goes around. Just acquired one of those & popped the little tab off of the house thats beside the pull handle & lost the little piece down in there.

Man I just had to do this to my roto tiller this morning after I broke the starter rope. I wish I had watched this video instead of doing it on my own. It took me 4 tries to wind the spring and put it in the housing without unbolting the two halves. Way harder than necessary!

Your videos are very informative. Your production quality is great! There are many videos on KZbin with the same information, but there camera work is horrible. The videos are too dark, the camera is moving way to fast or they are out of focus when trying to show closeups. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the video. We are about to try this on our Briggs and Stratton motor in our wood chipper since the rope broke. Are there any things that you think we should be aware of that could ruin the motor or be unsafe as we attempt to fix it?

@TheEmokid423 might be the starter clutch on the flywheel, sometimes spraying wd 40 in the small hole on top will make it return

Help! I know this video is old but I have a 7hp Briggs that looks like this. It needs a new pull cord. It’s currently brittle. Is this the same procedure or how many feet of rope should it take? I’d love if you could respond. Thank you.

great video , i wondered if you could help me, do you know what the factory setting is for the carb please, as i think the previous owner has messed about with mine and when i got it running it was bogging down, so i just wanted it to back to factory setting and start again if i have to alter it to get it to run sweet . if you can help it would be great , thanks in advance

OH, man I could save you most of that work!! Once the housing is off the motor, fully pull the rope out of the housing. Be prepared with a clamp to secure the wheel so the spring doesn't re-spool the rope. Now push (not pull) on the rope to force the knotted end out of the wheel. Cut the knot and throw away the old rope. Carefully push the new rope through the outside hole on the housing and thread it into the hole in the spinwheel and push it until it appears in the hole where the knotted end had been. Using a needle nose pliers or safety pin, pull the end of the rope out of the hole. Proceed with tying and melting, etc. This would be a good time to see that the spring is as tight as it can be before reattaching the rope.

BTW: My procedure starts immediately after the 1:00 minute mark in the video.

so if it wont go in all the way by itself do you have to replace the cord or just tighten the spring?
@johnwade57477 жыл бұрын
An easily overlooked step is not noticing the 12'o'clock triangle mark that is on one of the 4 corners of the starter clutch's shank on all horizontal engines.With it at the TOP,it insures that you will not have to pull hardly any rope out before one of the clutch's ball bearings takes hold.(No rope loss..,no sore shoulder)

Would you happen to know what size bolts hold the cowling onto the motor? I acquired and old tiller with the same motor but the housing was removed already and i have no idea what size bolts go on there.
@chrisnielsen35626 ай бұрын
In the same predicament as you, but they should be quarter inch bolts maybe 3/4 of an inch long half inch don’t take much to thread them in use lock washer

My tiller is a yard pro , it's pretty old , 5 h.p. , it's doing the same thing , I don't think it's as old as this one . I bought it in the early to mid. 90's I think . I believe my starter is a little different . Maybe you have another video on it .

Hi donyboy73, love your videos! I have an engine where the ratchet pawls broke, so I'll be doing that repair. However, I noticed that the rope didn't always retract all the way. Is this due to the spring? On this job you replaced the rope though the problem seemed to be the same as mine, the rope not retracting. What should I do?
@donyboy738 жыл бұрын
+Betsy Cambareri a new rope sometimes helps if the old one is stiff, you may need to make the spring tighter
