(3 Hrs) Reading 1950's Science Comics (Rockets, Atoms, Electricity, Lightbulbs, History)

Tonight we're reading four issues of GE's 1940's and 50's "Adventures in Science" comic series.
First, we travel almost 300 years into the past, to pre-industrial America and compare it to daily life in 1950's America. After this we read about the history and science of the light bulb and how that's changed society. Then we discover how rockets work, and how they transport both scientific satellites and nuclear warheads. Finally, we read about the atom and what technologies 1940's engineers and scientists saw coming in the atomic age.

These comic can be considered part of the late golden age and early silver age era of comics and that’s when you got both weird and cool stuff and see how people thought about the future.

This video really helped me appreciate my days more. I always had the feeling that what I'm doing is never enough and that i always have to be more productive & efficient. Having a different perspective about how people used to live in the past really makes me appreciate how easy alotta things are nowadays and how much less effort we have to do in order to get through each day.

Oh, these are SO excellent! The overarching optimism of the comics is just so addictive. I feel like we need to capture that spirit a little more nowadays; less doom and gloom, more "imagine how much we'll be able to do 50 years from now."

Art is a reflection of the experiences and thoughts of the people of the time the art was made in. The hopeful nature of those early comics rode on the back of a great world war victory and major technological innovations.

At 7:32 it’s Crazy how in the 1950s Johnny says he “knows what they mean by the good ole days” and that he wished he lived back then. In 2024 the 50s are the good ole days now and I’m sure he’d say the same thing today.
