Fun fact: James stated on his Cali Death Podcast episode that while he's known for the BC Rich during his Obituary stint, he actually recorded the Cause of Death solos on a Charvel lent to him by Mike Davis from Nocturnus

Disincarnate was so heavy for that time, these days I can only listen in small doses, I still have fun grinding out those sick sounding riffs

This is amazing! I know James personally and he’s one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. And he is an absolute legend and insanely talented musician, songwriter and producer. I’ve also played guitar with him and it’s a memory that will live with me forever. It’s amazing to see all the amazing words and love being sent James’s way:.

I use so many James Murphy licks, and I kind of pick like him and use the same picking patterns.

James is a straight up legend. So glad he made it through the cancer scare back in the day. His lesser known stuff on Roadrunner United and World Under Blood’s Tactical is killer. Also, I’d love to see a 3 licks episode on any of the other Death guitarists. There’s so many cool jazz and fusion inspired ideas between Paul, Bobby, and Ralph (RIP)

James is one of the all time greats. His contributions to metal are substantial. His punishing riffs and shreddy melodic solos are second to none. Love the darker and groovier era of TestAmenT.

What a nice surprise finding this video. Terrific! Hearing Murphy's solos on the Spiritual Healing casette in March 1990 truly changed my life, and I hadn't even started playing guitar until a year later. His vibrato, phrasing, pick attack, legato...all without equal. He's been my favorite lead guitarist ever since. Even talked on the phone with him about 3 or 4 times.

Thank you for this lesson. I'm a huge fan of James Murphy. Spiritual Healing and Cause of Death came out when I was in highschool. His playing on those two albums changed how I played and how my band sounded. You could play melodic shred in death metal. No longer were we just ripping off Death and Possessed. Now we could rip off Racer X and Yngwie too! I'll never forget my bass player saying "You can't play that that's Cause of Death dude" hahahaha. Anyway I love his playing and Disincarnate. If anyone is interested he was a guest on the Cali Death Metal podcast not too long ago.

That tapping lick sounds like a variant of the "spiritual healing" tapping lick almost. That is the album James played on in death. Love his solos on that album.

His guitar work in Disincarnate is the some of the greatest playing in death metal ever. Also, the stuff he did on Testament's Low album was killer.

Good morning James. Putting myself in your shoes, itt must be quite an experience to find a video of someone as amazing as David Brewster, who broke down and studied isolated licks from concerts you performed at, that are that old, and share the tutorial with the world as a lesson to explore and improve. The honor is all yours. Keep Shining.

I don't know if you have ever posted or considered, but could you do a "Chordplay" video for Vinnie Vincent? He is one of my favorite songwriters from the 80's. He was absolute over the top gunslinger guitar player, but he was brilliant.
