His phrasing in the 90s particularly Awake/Change of Seasons/Infinity was just so special IMO

Images and words too, for me. Amazing touches on that album.

I remember how excited I was for Falling Into Infinity to be released. John and Mike did some clinics leading up to it, with sneak peeks at parts of the new songs. I loved that era, particularly with Derek Sherinian's energy and humor.

One of my favorite albums. Underrated, it was a shift in their sound as they fought with the label for “radio” songs but they wanted to keep the DT sound. I think there are great tracks on FII especially Lines in the Sand! But the early albums are all incredible. 🤘🏼

Outstanding, thanks DB. Love the “Picasso Era” of Dream Theater. Perhaps you can answer a technical question for me; at 7:20 when you launch into the double-picking sequence can you explain the mechanics of your thumb movement? It rolls in and out at the knuckle presumably to control pick orientation. But I have never understood the action/reaction of the movement. Thanks.

I think he might've got the sidewinder technique from Neil Shon in the song Lights. I love that tune, and playing that solo. It's one of my favorites. Shon does it super fast, and I still have trouble with it sometimes lol. You've gotta go into it just right, or it all falls apart.

Totally agree that John is a whole package player. Love his solo work! First discovered JP when I bought a G3 DVD with Via and Satch - didn't know who this Petrucci guy was. Well Glasgow Kiss was the first thing I heard and was totally blown away!

John was using these licks a lot during those days when he was playing live. Lick 1 can be heard in the background at some point during Rock Discipline. Lick 2b is in the Voices solo (Awake is a stellar album!) and also in the intro solo of Rock Discipline. Chromaticisms like Lick 3 were all over his lines (and still are) and examples of the dominant pentatonic lick can be found in the awesome Scarred solo. His playing in the 90s sounded a bit more... risqué? Does that make sense (that Scarred intro... my goodness)? He has evolved, grown and matured in all the best ways, yet Images and Words and Awake had some spice that was never reproduced in later albums, their greatness notwithstanding. I have a particular spot in my heart for JP's music... he looks like such a good person too, always very gracious with fans and fellow musicians. Great video, Dave! Love the tone coming from that Strat.

I think he have more technique nowadays, but i find his playing to be tastyer in 90's.
@ericjpdt Жыл бұрын
In fact, the first lick belongs to a song that he write as a bunch of exercices combined to play at clinics. You can hear bits of this song in Rock Discipline and Petrucci finally released this song in Terminal Velocity,with a few changes to his structure. It's called Gemini

Late 80s early 90s Dream Theater is my favourite. John’s tone during that era was unbeatable. In the 90s I had a Picasso Ibanez and sold it in the early 2000s. That was the biggest gear mistake I ever made!!

LATE NIGHT, E dominant pentatonic is the b7 pentatonic scale in the Key of F# minor. Mostly others will use Diminished scale but the dominant pentatonic is a substitution scale. Example in the key of C major you will play the Bb dominant pentatonic scale which is the b7 pentatonic scale.

No2 B is from the "Voices" song; that's a.very common pentatonic guitar rock pattern lick, used in the 80's. It's also on Sweet Child O'Mine guitar solo. Prince's "Purple Rain" has the same chord progression as Journey's "Faithfully" song. That's actually where Prince took that chord progression idea from. BTW 90's DT rules over today's DT.
