Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Larry Carlton Licks From 1987.
Larry Carlton is another LA studio pioneer and legend and one of the most-recorded session/studio guitarists of all-time. From his work with artists such as Joni Mitchell and Tom Scott to the legendary Steely Dan and countless others - his work is literally everywhere.
This lesson takes a look at some ideas pulled from his performance at the Warfield in 1987, during his Last Night/Discovery solo era. His playing has always been controlled, emotive, and inspiring, and the ideas featured in this lesson are sure to please those looking for some new ideas to add to their bag of tricks. From tasteful blues-rock phrases with plenty of character to twister "outside" jazzy-rock ideas, melodic string-bending moments, and much more.
There's a ton of things you can learn from studying the playing and musical habits of someone as talented and experienced as Larry Carlton and this lesson features a little bit of everything - so dive in!
Give this lesson a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Carlton is an incredible player & overcame a horrible tragedy of being shot in a robbery. From his legendary sessions with the Dan to his great but cheesy early solo albums he’s a monster player. Long live Mr. 335 & 🍺’ski! 🤘

Thank you for the Larry Carlton lesson! I've been a fan of his for years and you could easily do 5 or 6 videos on Larry's playing. Some Rolling Stone era Mick Taylor would be nice to see as well. Thanks again!!!

Back in 1987, I was in HS , the pest control guy came by to do his monthly spray. He noticed I was listening to something (can't remember what ) guitar oriented: most likely Hard Rock. Anyways, he asked if I like Jazz , I said I did, guitar oriented Jazz, sure. He went out to his vehicle and came back with a cassette that had Larry Carlton on side one and Lee Rittenour on the other. I listened to that tape often , when I'd get tired of Metal, Hard Rock etc.. - it was an awesome cassette. The tones, the songs, the playing etc.. - all definitely had my attention. The problem was , I never found out specifically WHICH albums these were , and not sure (since it's been so long) if I'd recognize them now. But that act of kindness definitely turned me on to the modern Jazz guitar genre . Thanks, Pest Control guy - wherever you are!

I made it a must to see Larry every time he would come to NYC at the Blue Note and BB King's Blues Club during the 90's and 2000's. I saw him so many times that he and his then tech, Rick Wheeler, acknowledged me at the shows. Both Larry and Rick were always very friendly and gracious to me. Larry is IMO the most versatile guitarist to ever come down the pike! Long may Larry and his 335 and Rick carry on!

I sat in the center of the second row at a Larry Carlton show, in Charlotte, in '87. In a small theater, Blumenthal Center for Performing Arts, I think. It was amazing.

I've been learning so much on guitar by listening to him... Listen also his very nice playing on 1981 Donald Fagen's "Nightfly". Steve Lukather was there too on another great album featuring Larry, great solos inside ! Eye to eye: "Shakespeare stole my baby"(1983) Especially the title: " Falling for a funny one" wow !

David - Another fine lesson, thanks! Your tone is always compelling, could you tell us what the path is on the Carlton lesson and add that into the descriptions of future ones? Adding that info to past lessons, if you feel like it and we hope some day you do, would be sweet.

I just read an interview last night with him where he said he didn't know what the fuss was about Kid Charlemagne and he kept reading and hearing about and he said to his wife that they needed to get the record and listen! And they both agreed that it just sounded like him and how he plays! So he thought that he must have just been good that day. I met him once too when he stayed at the hotel I worked at. Kind of shy.

Hey David, you seem to be covering a lot of my absolute fav players including Larry Carlton. Do you have Michael Romeo or Per Nilsson in mind for future vids? These two guys are easily identifiable by their unique playing and have so many licks, riffs, etc. as you know. Would be awesome

Totally outside the box, and so NOT like Larry here. But a suggestion for a 3 for all of Aldo Nova. Songs of his that are beyond "Fantasy" and "Monkey on your Back" have some great stuff going on. His first 2 albums "Aldo Nova- Self Titled" and "Subject" have some very cool melodic stuff in there. I would suggest solos from a few songs... "Heart to Heart", "See the Light" (Great uplifting song and solo is great) and "Victim of a Broken Heart" (a solo with very few notes, but so tastefully done. It always gets to me every time I hear it.) Thanks for all you do man. Do yourself a favor and go binge on some old Aldo music ;-)
