So I took Loretta's advice for the reading section and my score for the reading section improved by 10 points on a practice test after only a week of practice. Just saying it worked for me.

One thing I would say is failing is not the end of the world. The first timr I took jlpt was n4, I skipped level 5 and I didn't even study for n4. I failed by 9 points which to me wasn't bad for not studying and not knowing the format since it was my first time taking it. But even before I got the test results which is a while, I had the feeling that I didn't do so great. I went out and bought the jlpt n3 grammar book right after and studied the whole book within a month during my winter break. To make a long story short, taking the test regardless of passing or not served as a source of motivation for me to study hard, and it let me know where I stood with my Japanese

I'm taking the N4 this year and got 85% on a practice even though there's a lot I don't know. A tip I have for the reading sections is to read for the questions before reading the text so you know what you're looking for. This really helped me during my last practice test, I used to read the questions after the text since that's how it's structured but when I did that I forgot most of the information by the time I got to the end.

While studying Japanese, since the beginning, I almost never review at home but was still able to get decent marks on our practice tests. And I studied for about a month and a half. My Japanese teacher's advice was to actully just "memorize, forget, memorize, forget" vocabs and kanji but always practice reading fast. Along with practicing to write hiragana and katakana everyday in less than a minute so we'll be able to remember even the characters that we previously rarely encounter or use. He also repeatedly told us not to think too much when reading nor writing. If you forget then look it up. And keep forgetting until it sticks to you. Also, reading while listening to a certain passage or sentence helps a lot too. We've also built a habit of focusing on the questions first. Then what is it about or who are the characters involved in the question or is about. Then, pick up things/vocabs we recognize that would fit to the situation or question best instead of understanding everything. That goes with listening as well. And all these were very useful to me and for my peers. So hope it is for you too. If you wanted to try this method. Lol. Anyways, best of luck to you people who'll be taking N5-N1!

Dear Loretta, I have saved this video of yours in my playlist since many years back and I can't believe I am going to take N1 test in a week's time! It feels good to re-watch your video and remember those 3 tips again at this juncture, they have reminded me not to get anxious and not to look for new vocabs to memorise, but to focus on reviewing those notes and materials I have prepared for the test. Great tips on the reading technique too, which I am 100% sure it was not possible for everyone to finish reading all passages within the time given during the test. I am going to heed your advice and try reading the 1st sentence and last sentence of every paragraph (except first and last). And of course, to be able to sleep well and "live" well for the rest of the week before the doomsday. I feel less stressful now, and somehow am able to regain my composure, and so I really want to thank you so much for this wonderful video! ❤

Currently studying for the N3 and I did a practice test last weekend (and I set a timer!). I found that there is really a ton of time to finish all the problems. The listening test format is indeed something you need to get used to, but there is plenty of time to answer questions. For reading it definitely is smart to read the questions before reading the text, but for quick readers there is no real need to skip over half the sentences, just don't get stuck on that one word you don't know. This is just my experience from doing one practice test of course and I probably doesn't apply to other levels than the N3. Good luck studying everyone, I hope we all pass!
@pjdilip21 күн бұрын
I found it useful to read the question, the answers, then go to the underlined part, then read a sentence above and below it to understand which of the choices fits--- mainly to do with conjunctionsvand adverbs ( however, although, but, and, because, and similar)

1. In the few last weeks, do not study new things. Just keep focusing to remember and recall what you already know 2. Do not read all of the sentences in Doukai section. Read question and underlined first, then all of 1st pharagraph and the next ones only 1st and last sentences. 3. Listening practice, try to make a + sign on the blank paper and wrote all the details because they will give you 4 different options and beware of the tricky details AND THE MOST IMPORTANT: GET ENOUGH SLEEP!!!

Thank you for this! The first time I took the JLPT a couple years ago, I failed it by a few points because of this. Like even though I studied and everything, in the real test everything moved along so much faster, and it was easy to run out of time on things. I’m retaking the N3 this year, and I’ve been trying to take practice tests and listen to listening tests, and just trying to do it all a bit faster. Wholeheartedly agree on your study tips. This is useful even for JLPT N5 level. I took the N5 which was the easiest and most basic and studied normally instead of studying exam style. I barely finished the grammar/reading section portion of the exam on time and didn't as well as I thought in the listening because I was doing everything so slowly that the cd went ahead a few times while I was deciding my answer, urgh. So it's very important to use the last 2 weeks to train up speed and accuracy. Good luck everyone on your exams!

I agree 10000% with what you said about reading or rather skimming. I don’t know how but I magically got full marks on the reading section on the N2 last December. I was lucky enough to have a teacher at the time that told me a year before I took the test that for N1 and N2 A LOT of people run out of time so you have to learn how to read QUICKLY. What I did was I got the shinkanzen master dokkai book and I timed myself for each question in the book. For each short question I tried to answer them in less than 2 min and then after I checked the answer I would read the passage again slowly. I also did what you suggested. I read the underlined portions and I read the sentences before than and the sentence after that.

Now I haven't tried Loretta's Reading strategy, but personally, I like to read the sentence before and after the sentence the question is referring to, regardless of if it's underlined or not. The listening is quite unique but if you're used to writing down, crossing off wrong answers etc. while listening, it'll make your life so much easier for the listening section the day of. Also for the exam day itself, skip questions you don't know quickly so you'll have more time at the end to work on it if needed. Good Luck Everyone!
