Satori reader has been a life-saver. I especially love their explanations within the context of the item that you're reading. And smaller things like being able to hear ふ (a sound I struggle with) or how ん changes with vowels vs. consonants. I was originally waiting for a sale but I couldn't really hold off and just went for a 1 year subscription. I think its worth it, it makes learning a lot easier and I love the notes that you can check out for some of the more difficult parts. I also like that I can import the kanji I learned from Wanikani. So far I finished 2 articles and currently on my 3rd one.

@@Ahn-mu3db Hmm my reading skills are probably pretty close to JLPT N1 (speaking is a different story, lol). Like Loretta, I tried reading it when I was at a lower level and it was too difficult. The magical terminology is not as bad as you would think simply because the wizarding world is new to Harry, so a lot of the things are explained to him in simpler terms. I think the hardest part is simply following the story.

I passed the JLPT N1 first try two years ago after a year of on-off study and 6 months of intensive focus. Satori Reader was awesome for helping me keep motivated by mixing up the media I was using to get exposure to Japanese. Mostly, I used that series you're both holding - Shin Kanzen Master - and they are brilliant. I made a time line between the day I got the books and two weeks before the exam, and literally made a schedule for the six months, one row for each book; all the lessons in each book spread evenly over the time I had. Some books had 90 lessons and some only 25 or something so I knew it would be really easy to get ahead in the areas I was comfortable with and behind in others. Having a time line gave me a huge sense of accomplishment, I could see where I was leaning too hard on the sections that I enjoyed and falling behind in others.

Don't look up every word you don't know, it will just take all the fun out of reading and you won't remember them all anyway. Focus on frequent words, or words that somehow stand out to you. It will never be your last chance to learn a specific word. And if it really truly is your last time seeing that word, well then you probably don't even need to know that word.

@@kemushichan You know, Loretta, thinking about it more, I don't think your technique and mine are that different. What the process actually looks like for me is, I will often finish the sentence or paragraph before looking up the word(s), and then go back and read it again. So it's kind of a mental underline, a little mental tag on that word. I've just discovered that it's better for me not to get too far ahead before I stop and check, because knowing the meaning of that word will often greatly illuminate what follows. But at the end of the day, I think we're basically doing the same thing. It's just a question of now or later, and I think that just comes down to style and preferences.

zehaha, I totally get how it can feel overwhelming to be looking up too many words. But it's also frustrating when you find yourself at a really important part of the story and you realize you're not exactly sure what's going on. For me, I find reading to be the most satisfying when I'm staying with the author every step of the way, even if it means my progress is a little slower than I might like. This part didn't make it into the video, but I've found that as I've gotten older, my hesitation to look things up has decreased. I no longer feel it to be an impediment to my enjoyment; rather, it's the sunshine that illuminates the rest of the story. Of course, everyone is different and your mileage may vary. Those are just my two cents.

@@kemushichan i am a look up as I go type. Especially when reading manga. I'm currently reading Junji Ito's Uzumaki and the storyline is rlly interesting. So 98% of the time, I'm looking up what I don't know to get extra details. Sometimes if it's too much back to back in one bubble that idk I skip around in the text and try to use context clues.

Hi, Isaac! Variety can be really helpful to combat burnout. If you just can't do another flashcard, for example, try switching to something totally different, like going back to a chapter from a story or dialogue you read before, just to review it. The change of pace is refreshing sometimes, and you almost always discover things you didn't notice the first time too. Also, when I was really studying like crazy, I experienced these waves where sometimes I felt like I could learn anything and other times I felt like nothing would enter my brain. I learned not to try to learn new things during those periods but just to use them as opportunities to review. The important thing is to find a way to work with your brain, and before you know it, you'll be past the plateau and making progress again. 頑張ってください！

Kindle helped me a lot, there are many books which have furigana for most words - and for those where its missing all it takes is 1 second marking that word and the reading along with translation will appear.

Nice tips! My best friend at France & I are sharing her Satori reader account we got the nice deal! I’m the reader that would read the full sentence or page in kids books & then take every word I don’t know & find the meaning. Then reread it again & figure out what it says in English. Definitely nice addition with the flash cards that Satori has I’m enjoying Mona’s Big Adventure it is challenging as a beginner & the short series of Restaurants, Hotels etc. is nifty as well. I'm so happy I stumbled onto this video. I've subbed here, and subbed to the Satori Reader Support channel as well. I've been a Human Japanese evangelist for a long time, now. At the beginning of my journey when I hit that first "crap I need to learn Hiragana and Katakana" wall, it was Human Japanese that broke everything up at the perfect pace, empowering me to go ahead and start learning, and speaking, while I acquired the basics. I felt so motivated, and that helped me push through. Recently I hit another wall. I reached chapter 5 in Genki I after a few months, but my tutor on iTalki kept me there for a few weeks because I couldn't recognize all of the kun and on Kanji readings in quizzes he would give me, and it totally sucked the wind out my sails. Fast forward to this evening, and I was so shocked and delighted to see THE GUY who made Human Japanese! I went out of my way to look at the "credits" in the app because I have so much respect and gratitude for your team, and getting to see that you're such a kind, curious, and helpful person... It's pushing that wind back into my sails. I'm determined to do this. Well. Like I said, I'm about 5 chapters into Genki and 27 chapters into Human Japanese. I still struggle, and I don't even know if there is material on Satori Reader that I can meaningfully engage with, but I'm going to subscribe and incorporate it into my studies. I'm also going to find a more laid back italki tutor who will indulge me in very simple conversation, meet me where I am, and encourage me. Thank you both for this interview. As a 32 year-old trying to learn a new language, motivation and grit are so important, and you've helped stoke both of those things in me. 本当にありがとうございます。

Matthew, thank you for sharing your story. There are definitely a lot of ups and downs that come with learning a language, and it sounds like you've had your share. Stick with it, though! Getting through those challenges only makes the victories sweeter. It's great that you're working with a tutor. I think you're right that finding the right fit is important, so it sounds like trying someone else might be a good idea. Regarding Satori Reader, I'd recommend starting with the "Human Japanese: Extra Credit" series. Each episode is tightly linked to a chapter from Human Japanese, so it's a nice way to review what you're learned while also getting more comfortable reading. Are you saying your teacher made you memorize the on and kun readings, in isolation, just because? Because that's considered to be a terrible strategy by most people. That sounds exhausting. I definitely agree with you plan to maybe switch teachers..

Very interesting contract to Tadoku, which famously stated the absolute opposite: just keep on reading, skip what you don't know, capture the overall plot and topic - then return again later. Having tried it, I'm still not quite convinced: my choices seem to be to stay with whatever level of Tadoku I'm at, which gets boring. Alternately, I proceed through the levels - and then go back to some lower level to verify I now know those previously unknown words. Which becomes ridiculous, like verifying your understanding of Shakespeare by going back to See Spot Run. Maybe if there were hundreds of Tadoku stories at every level, but there aren't. I think I'm just going to go for the JLPT5 and then take the plunge into Satori, death before glory! That all said, the more I read about JLPT, including articles and even all the way down to reddits, the less the higher JLPT levels look attractive. If I read one more story about "I passed JLPT1 but I can't understand or speak native Japanese", I'm going to write it all off as a pure money-making venture. I'm totally with you guys about mixing it up - even when it's beyond my current level: Anki cards, then read a book *about* Japanese, then listen to a Japanese audiobook, then watch anime with (Japanese) sub-titles. Doesn't matter what I don't understand: the brilliant thing is the sheer endorphine jolt when you re-watch some anime or listen to an audiobook chapter and suddenly you understand something you didn't before!

When I was first starting to learn Japanese, the vice-president of a pretty big company asked me what I was planning to do after the project, and I kludged together a basic sentence something like "I'll eat and sleep for a few days!" but instead of saying 寝る, I said ヌル！So, I ended up saying a poorly constructed sentence that sounded like I was going to go home, eat and then do something sticky -_-

I love languages so much, but Im usually so tired when i get back from work that i am usually able to dedicate around 40 minutes midweek after work for languages. I sometimes fantasize about winning the lottery so i can have 2 to 3 years to just learn Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French and Arabic. Signed up yesterday, was checking things out, and I wanted to check out that Nutshell Grammar course. Couldn't remember what it was called, just remembered the description. So I re-listened to end of this episode, and that's when I realized that it's not coming out until January. Le Sigh. I guess it can wait. I'm still working on my Genki 1 textbook, and I'm going through the Human Japanese course, so maybe I'm not ready for the new course anyway. But I'm looking forward to it!

awesome interview, that proverb is my new mantra, so good! love this guy, been using Human Japanese and the HJ intermediate apps since like 2012/2013 and was so stoked to see advance turn into satori reader and how amazing of an app it is as well, if you haven't tried Human Japanese yet, its amazing and its what really kicked off my learning easy to understand, good for quick snippets of learning, and is cheap with a free version to dip your toes in first.

I have been studying Japanese for four years, and I still struggle with speaking it. When I studied in Hirakata early this year, I found myself freezing whenever someone would speak to me. It feels good knowing that I am not the only one and that there are new ways to refresh my grammar and learn more.

Hi, Tori. That's completely normal. Everybody gets nervous speaking to a new person in a foreign language! I'm a naturally introverted person and I certainly still feel the jitters sometimes! The only way to get over this is just to do more of it. For me, I used to get really nervous talking on the phone in Japanese. So one day I started to make a point of calling local businesses when I had a question instead of just looking up the answer online. My heart would race as the line was ringing! What if I can't understand them? What if they're really busy and I'm wasting their time? But after a while it got to be easier. You start to feel comfortable with the patterns: how they will answer the phone, how you should get into your question, how you should end the call, and so on. That's the way communication is across the board. It's hard at first, but the more you do it, the easier it gets. So please don't give up! You can do it!

Tori Carter If you are scared, how about writing or talking to yourself or thinking in your mind? It works. And you won't feel scary to speak with someone. Or you might not have listening skill yet and that makes you to feel scary.

This is something where we'd really need to turn things over to other teams with expertise in other languages and cultures, but as the app and service become more full-featured, I think it's something that will be more and more doable. @4:45 interesting learning methods... I never thought to read and come back. I always had to force myself to learn it on the spot. Mainly because I decided to go from 0 - 100 and change my Playstation and games to Japanese. And in order to get through the story and finish it, I kinda had to look it up then and there to progress further. Not recommended for the faint of heart. It's actually brutal. But also, video games so 🤷🏾‍♂️ worth it.

Wow, it's great that the video game was so motivating to you! Regarding reading in general, whether you do it Loretta's way or look up unknown words on the first pass, either way, it's definitely worth your time to read the material again after you've had a chance to digest the new vocabulary. It is truly amazing how different the experience is the second or third time through.

Yes. If anything, I would say repetition plays a huge factor, as the more often you see and read a few words, the quicker you get used to them, even if they are being used differently. Luckily I happen to run into dialog that does this when going about certain quests and stuff. At least with Satori I can bookmark and save at a specific point and then continue whenever, haha, BIG PLUS. Better than waiting/searching for save points in games.

22:13 ‘The reading part...’ I heard this so many times and would like to offer my solution. (It isn’t the oft heard ‘start with the readin.’)Buy books that drill the questions and practice them never exceeding 12 seconds per question. If you haven’t answered it in. twelve move to the next. This is a huge psychological hurdle for most people who waste sooo much time on a single stupid question in the actual exam. Train yourself not to do this and then do the math. Your reading time will be huge! When I took N2 this training left me with 20 minutes spare time afterI finished the reading where I went back and could work on those annoying few questions. this is a guaranteed mathematical approach to passing. Of course you have to acquire the knowledge first but then speed drill, speed drill, speed drill. Then one month before the test I took the test six times on my own with past papers. as well. Like Brian says, it’s absolutely vital so that the real test has no surprises including the stupid blank page near the end that flummoxes so many people...
