🦋3 Levels of Butterfly Gel Polish Nail Art🦋

We’re back with a basic, better and best video and today we’re doing 3 levels of a Monarch Butterfly.
My first step in the outline, which I’ll do with a mix of void and top coat, you could use base coat. The Basic is quite simple and rounded, Better has a little more detail and the Best is very detailed and took a longer time.
I’m going to go in with the red at the edges, getting neater through the different nails and then I’m going to add the orange as the next layer of colour and blend those together. The blend on the Best nail will be a lot more detailed than the blend on the Basic nail. I’ll then add my yellow to the blend at the bottom corners of the butterfly wings and then cure everything all at once. Make sure you’re thin with the coloured gel polish so it cures properly.
I’m then going to do my body, the Basic nail is a simple line, the better nail has a little bit of a head and the Best nail has a lot more detail. I’ll then outline the butterfly, following the guide I made earlier. I’ll then go back in with my gel polish to really clean up the blend, using mainly the orange very thin.
With the black, I’m going to add in the veins, doing simple, straight lines for the first nail, and then adding a bit more detail to the second nail. I’ll add my antenna and then the white dots. I’m going to top coat with gloss top coat and then matte top coat.
For the Best nail, I’m going to add dots on the edge to create a scalloped edge and use those dots to help create the veins of the wings. I’ll then make both white and yellow dots and a bit of shadow before top coating the same way as before.
I’m going to finish these off with some grass on the bottom to really finish the look.

Gorgeous!! Monarchs are so beautiful! They migrate in the US and there is a place in California called Pismo Beach where you can literally see thousands of Monarchs in one place. It’s phenomenal!! My favorite butterfly!

Where I live in Virginia, we also have Swallowtail butterflies. They come in a few basic varieties; Yellow w/black lines, sometimes with a blue ''eye'' on the lower wing; and the beautiful black and electric blue swallowtails. Oh, and there is the Zebra Swallowtail. Have a look at that family of butterflies. I'm sure they will give you lots of beautiful inspiration Kirsty. I absolutely love elephant hawk moths. They are so beautiful (I’ve designed a set of nails on them before) people usually associate moths being boring and the butterflies beautiful. But folks! If you’ve never seen an elephant hawk moth! You’ll be surprised how beautiful they are. Great video ❤️

Monarchs have a complex migratory system. They over winter in Mexico, and then it take 3-4 generations for them to migrate north. These butterflies live 2-6 weeks. The ones that migrate all the way back to Mexico live the longest - 6-9 months. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent. Take care Kirsty and Adam.

Here in many parts of the usa, monarchs were recently placed on the endangered list sadly. These are beautiful very close to a female monarch...nicely done

In MN, we have a Monarch butterfly highway, Interstate 35, and it goes down to Texas when it migrates.

I haven't finished the video but wanted to let my geek flag fly 🤓. I think a reason the caterpillar has two sets of antennae (I think they're actually called tentacles) is to help confuse its predators as to which end is actually the head and to sense its surroundings bc they really can't see that well.

The extra antenna on the caterpillar's bum are for if a bird attacks the caterpillar it instinctively goes for its head. So some caterpillars have longer fake antenna on their bums so that the bird attacks it's bum thinking it's the head. If the caterpillar gets away I think they can survive a bite on the bum easier than one to the head... so it's to defend the caterpillar and to confuse,scare predators.

I'm raising monarch caterpillars in my house. They ONLY eat milkweed... Which is one of the reasons that their populations are so dramatically diminished in the US. Habitat destruction removes the milkweed and pesticides kill the caterpillars. In the wild a monarch caterpillar has a 3% chance of survival into adulthood but if you raise them indoors and then release them into the wild after they come out of their chrysalis their survival goes up to around 90%. So, everyone plant some milkweed in your garden to help the pollinators. I also raise black swallowtail caterpillars into butterflies. They eat dill, fennel, parsley, and carrot tops. Black swallowtails would make beautiful nail art!

This video got me curious so I had to go look up Monarch butterflies and learn a little about them. A group of them is called a "Flutter", which I thought was cute af lol. And sadly, they recently were classified as endangered. Their population has declined as much as 90% over the last few decades (source is PBS) due to climate change causing habitat destruction and the use of pesticides which kills their host plant, milkweed. They're pollinators so we need them. 🦋🧡🖤🤍
