Actually, this is one of the most commonly used (and most efficient) ways to studying pieces of music. You focus on a passage, deconstruct it to its most basic form, and gradually add elements as you get more comfortable with the simple forms, until you are finally able to play the original passage :)

It definitely took me lots of practice to play like that and eventually I realized that I can do it easily on beginner guitars with necks that aren't as wide but my hands are too small to play with my thumb like she does on regular size necks. It might be worth taking a look at different guitars and you may find it's a lot easier than you thought!

I have used this song as one of my go-to noodling songs for years now, doing precisely what you're doing... just playing over the chords in as many interesting ways possible. The song was practically written for that type of practice/exercise. Great video, as usual.

Shoulda just copied the strat style like every other company. That was because of Paul’s hubris. Guarantee! He wouldn’t budge on the PRS headstock being his shape. Stupid move that cost him money like most decisions based in pride. The official explanation was for copyright reasons yet Suhr and every other company make almost 1:1 strat copies with apparently no issues. Dude is a walking sack.

Good stuff! FWIW, the original chord changes have a G7 instead of a single note G in the walk up on the low E string. It's one of the many things that makes this such a great tune.

Reminds me of many years ago when my son was only a few years old constantly tugging at my leg asking questions and talking to me and me answering him while jamming with friends. They all used to ask me how I did it. Listening to him, and talking to him and in general paying attention to him all while playing and singing in between. Guess you just get REALLY good at multitasking as a musician/parent. Great video Mary. Great song and a sad loss of the performer of a such an iconic song.

@@lofr8982 Well, no, because that would just be weird to say I'm attracted to my mom. Haha. What I meant was watching her talk and explain the process while still playing. You can sometimes see the blank glossed over look in her eyes while she is multitasking and she is speaking slower than usual thinking what she wants to say next while still playing. Her mind appears to be near overload, but, she's doing and awesome job at it and I can relate. Mary is doing a great job! I know a few musicians who can teach, play, or sing, but, in no way can do any two of them at the same time. Just one at a time. My post was meant to be a complement to Mary.

I don't really feel like this is what people mean when they say fingerstyle. Like playing with your fingers does not equal fingerstyle. And the skill level never really made it past intermediate at best. Compare with Mike Dawes explanation of Somebody that I used to know. That is fingerstyle as it incorporates the melody over the bassline. You don't need to sing cause the melody is in the guitar. And each part is added in while maintaining the others. Not just playing slightly more difficult versions but incorporating them all together. I mean no hate just feel this misses the mark on what it says it is.

Nice voice, too. Very listenable, nice styling. One of the better covers of this song I've heard. You are definitely correct about the less is more. I like the tonal choice for the guitar for the application as well. You seem like you'd be really good in a small club doing exactly this sort of thing, talking about the music and performing it. @@seag.1 My thumb's range of motion is restricted my the way my joints have developed. If I play a bass note with my thumb I can only play the 1st and 2nd string with my free index finger. any further will put too much pressure on my wrist and joints in my thumb sadly. I'm quite used to fingered barre chords now so its not a huge issue

This is not fingerstyle! It's just playing an arrangement of the song, but the melody should be in the guitar lines, over the bass and middle lines. Should not have to sing

@@kane29842 I'm pretty sure you're not a big fan of candyrat music and modern fingerstyle, right? Cause if you were there is no way you'd say what you just said. I'm pretty nuts about it. And while I don't mind finger picking in general by any meaning, this is not what people are talking about when they say fingerstyle. I subscribe to fingerstyle magazine and most of the pieces feature real counterpoint, even if simple. The guitar carries a melody and a bass line. This comment section is just full of... It's not advanced in any sense and it's not really fingerstyle. Just check out licknriff, Mike Dawes, andy McKee...Antoine dufour, or just spend an hour in candy rats website. you are pretty damn good, coming from a man who lives in new orleans and has been playing since 1982 it may mean a little. the most impresive part is that you actually sing your ass off while you are playing pretty damn good and thats not particularly easy. it takes tons of practice to get where you are keep it up.
