Thank you for that. I've tried all of these as well, and there are some differences. But for me, the greatest value in my Haynes hand made is that after 40 years of constant use (and several complete overhauls and numerous "Clean Oil Adjusts" and pad, cork and felt replacements) it still, literally, plays and sounds as good as new. I wonder if today's flutes, especially the "lower tier" ones, will wear as well.

That is a great first hand endorsement! My flute is 20 years old and I agree with that. I love getting a clean oil adjust and getting back a brand new flute. I too wonder how the newer flutes hold up. It would be interesting to do a study on that.

Agreed! The 3SB Gemeinhardt is NOT what it was in 1991. Though my studio instructor 1993-1997 was "surprised" at what I could produce from it.

Option no1 was the best for my ears. It had a darker core sound. I guess it depends on where you're working, the others were brighter & would carry in an Orchestra. For small ensemble or Jazz playing, Option 1 is the sound for me. This 'blind fold' test is not fair...you could make anything sound good. Thank you for a great lesson.

Thank you for an actual review. Looking to upgrade as an adult who plays in a community band, run by my Wind Ensemble director, in a top 100 music area. My Gemeinhardt 3SB was awesome through university as a "very serious non-music major". The mechanism is at the end of it's reliable life. So much Lock-Tite. Heavily favoring Amadeus and Sonare 700 series instruments. Budget is 5k.

Picking out a new instrument is so much fun. With your budget you should be able to pick out a really great instrument. Both the Amadeus and Sonare are fantastic. You can't go wrong with either of them. Have fun with your new instrument!

I guessed them correctly... pretty easy. I love the way you just slightly shape or fatten your quarter notes, to draw out the color of each note. My first teacher was Luella Howard, who did that well, too. Great tone you have. 👍

Thank-you Josh! People mostly discuss the tone of different flutes but there is more to it then tone. The action of the keys, how it feels in your hands, and the weight of instrument should all factor in on the choice one makes before buying a flute.

Can you play full-range long tone and over-tone series when you test flutes? There is a lot of distortion from the vibrato and peripheral acoustic noises in most of your flute-testing videos. Much appreciated your work in showing us what each has to offer.

Hello Dr. Mcbreaty. I’m a Japanese and playing flute for almost 30 years by now but somehow Haynes flute is not very popular here except their legendary 1960s flutes. However, for me, Haynes sounds much comfortable than the other American flutes like Powell for instance, they feel more solid and supple where Haynes has much warmer and rich and sweet sound. I’ve never had a chance to play a Haynes in a Orchestra but I wonder how it performs. From the impression I get when I tried some of the Haynes flutes at a shop in Osaka, I suppose it blends very well with other instruments but does it make its sound not standing out in a orchestra? I’m currently playing Mateki flute; which is a very small workshop makes handcrafted flute in Japan, but thinking of adding Haynes in the future so it would be appreciated if I could have a professional opinion.
@DoctorFlute

Hello welcome from New York! I can't praise the Haynes flute enough. I've only ever played a Haynes for my entire professional life. They play beautifully in the orchestra. When I was playing principal in an orchestra the compliment I was given was that the color that I had was phenomenal and I credit that back to the flute. These instruments are impeccable in design and tone color. If you can get your hands on a professional model you would love it. Even so the Q series is fantastic and the intermediate flute (which my daughter plays) still sounds great.

DoctorFlute, Thank you so much for your prompt reply to my comment. I really appreciate it. I’m not sure if I can get the professional model but even other models you’ve played in the video were fantastic. Yes the tone color that Haynes; especially the professional model has is absolutely adorable and happy to hear that it still recognizable in orchestra. Maybe it’s only a matter of preference and I also wasn’t sure if what I feel about Haynes is right but now I’m really encouraged to get one of these, so thank you so much! Besides, I know that it’s not only what instrument you play but it’s the unique sound that each player has, and I really think your sound is good with Haynes flute. So I was very lucky to find your video here (:

@@DoctorFlute I own a Jack Moore flute that I adore. I’ve had it for 33 years. However, when I was growing up in the flute world, I always wanted a nice Haynes, but my parents could not afford that. Got a silver, stuffy, stiff Gemeinhardt instead. This was 1971. I’m not playing in any groups any longer, but would just love a Haynes anyway.

I'm currently debating on upgrading to the Q3 with a 14K riser, although I'm wondering if it might be beneficial to look at the Q4 as well. Do you think the drawn vs soldered town holes makes a big difference? I currently play on an Azumi Z3 and the difference in sound between my flute and the Q3 blew my mind. Do you have recommendations on the crowns Haynes sells? I recently looked at their website and found it interesting how they mentioned the differences the inlayed jewels can make.
@DoctorFlute
@DoctorFlute 11 ай бұрын
I think a Q3 with the 14k riser would be a fantastic flute. I am wondering if the Q4 would make that much of a difference. I do like the bigness of soldered tone holes. My current flute has drawn tone holes but if I were to do it again I would switch to soldered. At conventions I have tried the different crowns. I do think they make a difference and I would love to make a video but I have asked more then once to do a video with flute crowns but so far its a no go.
