My grandmother was a woods and fields forager. Cowslip, dandelion, all types of wild berries and nuts, pears, apples, peaches, grapes. Wild game and fish were brought to her by the men in the area. many of could take one or two things from him. Start planting more frult and nut trees when we take down an ornamental. Plant native plants instead of weird things like crepe myrtles. Get rid of our lawns and plant food crops instead. Many people complaining of grocery prices could learn how much they could save by growing some of their own vegetables. In Northern climates, cold frames are generally inexpensive. Support your local growers. In Europe people actually rent a plot just to grow food. In addition to the food being more nutritious (losing value through shipping and/or processing), it is good for children to understand that all food doesn't magically appear in the grocery store or McDonalds.

Yep, I believe it's going to in high demand in the difficult years ahead. Since parents here in the states are taking back their children's schools (and out of the hands of the dept. of education), maybe they will teach these things, and at the very least, the parents will teach their children at home, because the parents will be working hard to grow food.

My grandmother would send me down to the root cellar to bring up quart sealers of wild strawberries or blueberries. The taste was indescribable. As I got older, I marvelled at how long it must have taken her to fill a six-quart basket of those delicious wild berries. Sean obviously earns enough money from his channels (well done sir) to just go buy more food than he needs. I think it’s both inspirational and instructive that he still has a need/desire to provide his own food. This is food security. I live on a fairly large city lot and while not wealthy, can buy whatever food we need… but I still work hard to provide as much food as possible. Let’s all follow his example and produce at least a little of our daily food. I’m trying to eat at least one thing every day that I’ve grown myself, .

Hello Shawn, I used to eat potatoes and lived off grid for 20 + years when in my late 20’s. To grow my potatoes I put the pieces with eyes 2” below the dirt. Then layer slices of hay bales over them. When you lay the hay you want to lay about 4” over the next slice of hay. The taters grew like crazy and it was easy to lift a slice to look under to check the harvest. When the hay would decompose a bit I would just lay a thinner slice on top of the decomposition. Also retained the moisture well. The chickens would pick the hay too. After harvest I would just let the hay lie, till it under in spring. Ultimately they are easy to pick at harvest. I never tried sweet potatoes like this but might be worth it.

The number of calories perspective is eye opening to me.. makes you realize there is a lot of (calorie burning) work involved in making sure you have enough to live and sustain yourself. I had always thought to plan much like I do now (being on grid) in terms of meals, etc. and what I get at the store only in long term and greater quantities (number of vegetables, fruit that will need to be grown and preserved, how much meat and so on). But you are correct.. there needs to be enough calories. I am no where close to my plan of being self sufficient but am on a financial plan first and foremost and learning skills I can now that will help me then. I really enjoy your channel.

Shawn you are indeed a steward of the land you’re on and you indeed grow so much with your garden. I never thought about it that way of total calories you need to survive before but you are right. The one thing I have to say is that the native people of this land before it was colonize didn’t strip the land. They work with the land to produce what they needed. And the land was healthier for it.

Honestly channels like Shawn's is what drove me to getting into conservation. We can absolutely extract resources from the earth in a way that allows to live the lives we want without driving the planet to a breaking point. Some sacrifices would need to be made with what expect from life but not much. One of the biggest things is fixing distribution networks, especially for food, utilizing local food networks is a huge one. I hope one day to be in a position to do something similar to Shawn.

@@chrismullin8304 to be fair we currently do produce enough food for everyone on the planet the biggest issue is food waste from producers (think about vegetable waste at grocery stores) and distribution. There's a lot more to it obviously especially when you get down to the regional level, but I'm really excited by the ideas of vertical farming in urban landscapes. The inefficient use of land by the suburb systems here in the US do us no favors. Lots of waste and lots of people left behind.

Shawn, I live in rural WV and we had a heck of a time keeping the deer from destroying our new fruit trees. Those things will even strip off the bark if there isn't anything else they can do to the plant. The only thing that worked was to build a small corral around each plant until the bottom limbs were out of their reach. We're talking years of growth here and altho they can stand on the rear legs and reach, by the time this happens, most have lost any interest in the tree. You've already had one chew off a branch, before those start budding, best be building something to protect them. The real fun is keeping out the tree climbing critters when it's harvest time. They'll let you know a green apple is just as tasty to them as a ripe one. The bad thing is they won't eat just one, they'll take a nibble out of them all. Good luck, spring is in the air...almost!
