I can acknowledge that pot soil works just fine in an aquarium. I tried this 30 years ago. My plants were healthy and they grew fast as a rocket! I had echinodorus growing up to 70 cm high (2 feet), untill they popped out of the tank. Never seen such a result with all the expensive commercial additives that are sold in aqua shops.

Walstad method never gets old. I prefer using this habitat for growing out plants or as the tank to grow out trimmings. However, once you get attached to the setup you just can't help but put shrimp or something in it.

@justinwhite42745 жыл бұрын
@@patriciamoldovan3092 The first tank that was setup was a 90 gallon. I also have a 180 gallon. So I looked at the hazards of blasting media and found people on KZbin who reported the media I choose as being rather neutral. At 12 dolllars a bag and with 150 lbs (3 bags) in my 90 and 50 lbs in the 180 (needs more when im ready) those sexy soils all the spoiled aquascapers use in endless abundance from seachem and such would be great... Maybe they should offer things that are practical like 50 lbs bags that don't cost an arm and a leg. But things seem to be growing. Although I've sadly lost a bunch of Anubias Nana Petite to rhizome rot. Im planning on getting nano tanks aswell. Since Im more of a large tank person. Great job! Can you explain your reasoning behind your mix of fertilizers, why did you choose what you chose? Also with CO2, how long would you expect before the substrate gave out?
@MarcassCarcass5 жыл бұрын
I suspect that it's all to feed bacteria and plants. The clay is probably for iron. The soil is probably for organic matter that will break down (might be a carbon source). The dolomite helps with the hardness of the water, not sure what else (might be a calcium source). And I know the potash will help feed the plants (potassium). No need to add nitrate cause the fish feces and food decomposition will produce more than enough. I wish I knew more to explain better.

@RegisAquatics6 жыл бұрын
For future additions. I like to switch up the scape every few months.
@baikia7776 жыл бұрын
The soil also leaches nutrients into the water column which is utilised by the epiphytes. That's why it can go without dosing more ferts.
@StanTheObserver-lo8rx6 жыл бұрын
Substrate is mostly just an anchor for most aquarium plants. For others,I've had good results with garden soil about 3" deep covered in another 2-3" of sand or gravel. Whatever you use,water changes brings it down to inert sooner or later. Then,you do need supplements. All that fancy strata is only good for a short while and unless you redo the tanks once a year,you end up with big plants that need some feeding.

I've heard that plants take oxygen out of the tank at night... so can kill fish if there is no aeration. Is this true?
@ktnanotanks95905 жыл бұрын
Joseph Seville it’s actually the opposite, the plants take up CO2 from the aquarium and produce oxygen for the fish 😃 that’s why planted tanks are very beneficial! If you have time you can check out my videos on my channel, I have two fully planted tanks and will be explaining the process in an upcoming video 😄
@RegisAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Plants do consume oxygen at night but not to the point of suffocating fish. Adding an airstone is only necessary if you are running DIY CO2 that you cannot turn off when the lights are off. Some people add airstones for the peace of mind though.

Hi, do you use filter to clean aquarium water.or you have to change water after a certain period of time. Thanks
@aszalai865 жыл бұрын
Nicely done, but...erm... have questions... No point in using dirt if you are only using slow growing plants most which do not even need soil... The usage of CO2 also destroys the point of a dirted tank - the ide is that the decomposing dirt will provide the necessary co2. I am pretty sure you could have achieved the same result just by using sand and a couple of capsule ferts for the crypts. I recommend Foo the flowerhorn's channel if you are looking for a guide on a real dirted nano tank ;)
@RegisAquatics5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! The CO2 definitely wasnt necessary for the success of this setup but the soil substrate was, in my opinion. I agree the results can be achieved multiple ways but i didnt want to be limited in my plant choices down the road so that was the reason for the soil base. This video was just documenting my results. Foo has great content, he inspired my recent filterless tank build.
