Watching this 180 days evolution has been quite enjoyable and instructive. Once again, I'd like to emphasize that fewer fish, more plants, and sufficient light can prevent algae issues. We should patiently wait without stressing the ecosystem.
Thank you so much for watching this video!

This is the most relaxing aquarium setup video I've ever seen. I wonder if we sometimes become too perfectionistic about an ecosystem needing water filters, CO2 systems, various substrates, and chemicals, forgetting about a natural ecosystem like this one.

I have a big aquarium (besides 5 other smaller aquariums I have) but I'm just too lazy to maintain it, has been months without water change, the water has gone 45% and needed to turn off the hang on filter (the water level is to low), The water is brown. The fish still alive without oxygen, the vallisneria-gigantea almost took over the tank. Yes, aquarium with plants needs no extensive maintenance.

I just want congratulate you on this beautiful tank. A few years back I've also created a self sustaining eco tank just adding water when needed and pruning the plants. Once the tank was established I stopped feeding my fish and and the fish just started breeding and multiply. Corry's bred tetras bred and the whole tank just flourished. The biggest key to success is to keep the tank well balanced. I so happy to see there is more people believing that it is possible as the over whelming idea of keeping a healthy aquarium is so based on filters and water change water change and water change. For those who wants to try it be patient and don't disturb the substrate and dont re-scaoe the tank leave it to set in. Beautiful tank well done❤

This is the way they're meant to be setup. I've got a 75g with soil and sand substrate, tons of plants, hundreds of cherry shrimp, a few amano shrimp, a nerite snail, tons of pest snails, ottos, khuli loaches and a pile of guppies. No water changes, no fertilizers, no filters, no heater and it's thriving. No algae and no issues, looks beautiful.

Sounds like a dream tank. Btw if the reason you only have one nerite snail is because you don't want them to overpopulate, they won't breed in freshwater. Maybe you just already have enough snails but I figured I'd say this just in case.

First... about the clay substrate, how high should it be... and then the second layer of sand, how high should it be? ..and how many plants should we plant...and finally the lighting, how many hours should it be on...and I am sorry for the long question.. I always felt these setups were missing more invertebrates. There's more to a freshwater ecosystem than just fish, snails, and shrimp. There should be scuds for detritus and as a food source, freshwater worms for biofilm, rotifers, isopods, etc. With less fish, you may not even need to feed them if the tank had all these invertebrates.

Tank size and the amount of plants and fish is why no filtration can work. If you have a small tank, it's harder to achieve. But balance between plants and the amount of fish is key.

Nice informative relaxed video. Kids play sand is a good cheap source of river sand, 15KG for £3. Its not always river sand so read the info on the back. I wash it a few times to get rid of mud and powdery bits of sand. Its labour intensive washng your bodyweight in sand, but its worth it over paying £16 for 7.5KG of sand from aquarium shop.

All my tanks except the external big pond have no filter and Cristal clear water, I still don't understand why people get so amazed with that. As if nature needs an electric filter for its ponds and lakes...
@williammcdowell6257
@williammcdowell6257 8 ай бұрын
Some ponds do work well with no filter, rising and falling with the seasons, but most natural lakes and ponds are fed by a river or spring and have an output beyond simple evaporation, flow and water change are part of most natural waters, obviously the Dead Sea has no output beyond evaporation.
@supremepeace.
@supremepeace. 8 ай бұрын
@@williammcdowell6257 i disagree.... Most lakes and ponds don't have a strong flow of water in the whole body... Rivers do, and that's another story. Even the ocean is not nourished with oxygen from the movement above, but by the algae and plants in it.
@williammcdowell6257
@williammcdowell6257 8 ай бұрын
@@supremepeace. Just for accuracy I didn't write about 'strong flow' certainly most lakes have flow but it wouldn't be a flow comparable to the say the strong turnover of around 10 times an hour turnover for a filter, as some recommend. I also never mentioned aeration, i.e. putting oxygen from the air into water. In fact I haven't personally used aeration on my tanks for over three decades. Please, there is nothing to be gained by disagreeing with me on things I didn't write. The Bann river feeds and discharges from largest British Isles lake. I am fundamentally keen on essentially nature based approaches to the hobby. But most ponds and lakes are not bodies of stagnant water even if there is no immediate visual evidence of a river or stream (often a seasonal stream) feeding in and out, often with small bodies of water, water often percolates in from the soil etc. and is evaporated off or runs slowly under the force of gravity from the pond. Water is also often lost from bodies of water by transpiration from plants and plants being eaten by herbivores. Transpiration is a major loss of water from bodies of water not fed by streams in the summer, come the autumn rains, and the re-emergence of seasonal streams, and the autumnal loss of foliage, the water is replenished. That is how most apparently stagnant ponds operate.

I'm trying to make a 5x2ft fish tank for my living space and wanted to know what kind of plants you used, what species, both plants and fish thrived so that I can too achieve this. The shop I go to recommends adding expensive substrates and fertilizers with CO2 infusion etc. but if it's not required, I'd rather have a natural looking tank like this. Please do suggest any pointers, thanks!

great video, I am a bit further on the same journey and wanted to share some of my experiences (been going 2 years). After around 6 months the soil started to be depleted of nutrients. I first started to feed more which had no effect, then I added fertilizer in the water column which helped start an algea bloom. The solution for me was eventually adding root tabs. What is your plan once the soil is depleted? I know the idea is that the fish waste would provide enough nutrients for the plants but this didn't work for me.

I love the set up sir! I'm definitely doing a large aquarium like this after college. Though I would think some angel fish would be nice as center-piece fish. Btw mine is a planted 15 gallon for now. It has a betta and some guppies + shrimps and snails. It has been set up for more than a year now and basically on autopilot. I only do a waterchange every 3 months or so if the water is starting to get really yellow because of tanins or I'm in the mood or a guest is coming. Its small HOB filter has no media in it anymore and only being used for water movement. Fish are happy and breeding and the plants are thriving, only has some algae on the rocks and wood which I dont mind and the shrimp for sure love it, and that's it. Aquariums like these shows that our hobby doesn't need to be complicated. Keep doin what you do sir. Cheers.

And one more thing, once algae develops on moss and soft leaved plants, they don’t disappear just by reducing light from 8 to 4 hours. Algae don’t disappear by its own. Yes, what he is telling you works. The two main causes of algae are too much light and too much feeding of the fish. This is the first time I have seen the video's from this person, but there are literally hundreds from Father Fish. I set up a 75 gallon tank using his method a year ago and it is flourishing to this day. It is set up very close to this method, no filter, lots of plants and fish, very little fish feeding, only about twice a week, and the water has stayed almost crystal clear and I just replenish the evaporated water every couple of months, but I have a lid on it so there is very little evaporation. Go to KZbin and search on Father Fish. You will be amazed. It is very simple and pretty much maintenance free.

All my tanks run without water changes, co2 or filters. Just powerheads for circulation, and top off the water level weekly I've been keeping fish this way for over 10 years.

have you ever dosed this tank with fertz ? Also put any root tabs or something? How do you deal with nutrient deficiencies? I am asking this because I am using exact substate but one of the plant leaves are curling and i have no clue what is happening

I don’t siphon. Mulm is beneficial, I have mulm in this tank on the back side maybe it’s not noticeable from the video.

love the no chemicals added to the tank (ecosystem). I have a 75 gallon and I practice similarly with natural soultions instead of chemicals. I use a soil and sand bottom similar to your tank. I really like your advise as far as the number of fish to number of plants. I need to work on that part. I use a filter and im impressed you do not.

You still have to do water changes its not like in the wild that gets topped up with rain water. It needs minerals from the fresh water

I like a little surface agitation to keep biofilm off the top of the water, a filter usually brings that but I could see just doing a small powerhead near the top.
