I had TKR on both knees in 2021, the second one was 3 months after the first one. I recovered very fast and could do most anything 3 months out from each replacement. I am doing great and glad I had it done. My knees now feel like they did when I was 35 and now I am 70. Enjoy you videos and used them during my recovery. To others who have had TKR, hang in there and do your exercises. Things Will get better day by day Thanks so much Tony for your informative videos

Thank for sharing ! You give me hope. 3/12/22 I am 2 1/2 weeks out from TKR ON left. Was told I will need on right also. However the right knee has calmed down considerably after the meds for the right knee. Was wondering if your 2nd knee continued to give you signs of needing replacement? Very encouraged you did so well and ready to go again at three months! So happy for your success!

I'm 55 years old. I feel like I'm about where you are Kevin, 6 weeks out. I was at 124 flex last week. I'm walking around fine during the day, night time is another story. I go to sleep and wake up every hour on the hour throughout the night with pain. I have to get up and walk around for a few minutes and it goes away. Go back to sleep and repeat an hour later until about 5am when I just give up and make coffee. It's really frustrating. I've heard that sleeping gets better at about the 2 month mark on average. I'm praying that Im average! Hang in there!

I'm a little over 3 months post RTKR and am doing very well. Recovery/rehab is no joke ... but hard work does pay off. Hard work physically as well as mentally. As part of my mental well being program, I regularly review forum postings as well as replacement KZbin clips. I must say that your channel is, in my opinion, the best out there by far. Thanks for all your previous postings and for the ones you will be posting in the future. Next month I'll have my LTKR and will continue to rely on your clips to help my recovery/rehab as it's done for Knee #1. Thanks!

Tony , it’s past time for me to thank you for your very informative and educational videos. I found you in November 2021 just after diagnosis of bone on bone osteoarthritis with spurs in both knees with advisement of TKR for both at age 70, retired RN. I had 8 weeks of pre-op PT and it was very helpful. I am now 2 1/2 weeks left TKA and religiously visit your site. I recently bought the massage roller you demonstrated on a patient and it is helping me tremendously. I seem to have quite a bit of IT band discomfort holding me up, but otherwise doing real well. Thank you for all that you do and most importantly your reassuring voice and demeanor. I have noticed I instantly relax just hearing your calming voice. You have a true gift,keep up the great work!

I am 3 weeks post MUA and I really feel frustrated with my PT forcing only thing is flexion, and basically putting such force on the flexion. I am now taking control over my PT mostly at home. I have about 98° of flexion but no strengthening until I started again. I am still on crutches and everything is all starting back to March when I first went into PT. I still have more pain than is normal, I am concerned with knee cap issue, and can't wait to see more videos.

Thanks for your videos. I’m at week 7 with some anaemia. I can just get to 90o but I’ve not got any better. I can walk upstairs with a push on the bannister. My physio at the hospital said it was fine, but I haven’t progressed at all in the last two weeks and I’m feeling a bit dismal about that. I’m in Northumberland surrounded by lovely countryside and I’d like to walk in it. Would it be good to do that? Or should I just keep trying to bend my knee?

Where I was going was making me feel guilty for not continuing to go there. I am 3 months out from my total knee replacement and I am feeling almost back to normal. I can continue to do the basic exercises at home and I do. I have been wondering if I did the right thing. Yeah, this is pretty common. The first priority is to manage the increased swelling. Elevation and compression usually work best. Help the lymphatic system pump all the junk out of the leg.

I'm at week eleven and my range of motion by myself is 117-120 with pain and lots of stiffness . When the therapist pushes on my leg I can get 122-126 But with more pain. Is this still normal in your opinion with my range and pain at eleven weeks. I walk completely fine and I am back to work doing is doing asphalt construction. They're telling me being back to work and still going to rehab is. Why my leg is swollen and hard to bend? But they tell me to keep up with it And eventually I will get to the 122-125 range by myself with no pain. they just extended me four more weeks. Again? Does this sound normal to you to be in the situation I am or should I be better off by now. Thank you and any advice would be appreciated

I am so glad to have found this PT advice! I am 3 days post-op second knee. My doctor is terrific, very good surgeon and warm and considerate as well. But I am so glad to hear that it’s okay to spend the first few days just recovering from the trauma of surgery. I had zero weight bearing pain with the first knee but with this op, I do have a fair amount of pain. I thought I needed to hit the ground running this time too, feeling guilty for lying in bed, walking to end of a hall a few times, and sleeping. Thank you for the okay to take care of myself. For the fourth day, I plan to start walking more, and do anterior tendon stretches, as you describe so well. It really hurts to put that pillow under the heel but it sounds like it’s okay to do as much as I can stand, rest, then repeat. Anyway, great job of explaining post op pain and therapy. Thanks!

Very helpful thank you, I’m just 6 days post TKR and was starting to panic a little after watching many videos and comments which seem to concentrate on the degree of bend as a measure of a successful procedure, your approach is definitely more holistic and person centred, whilst covering all the necessary basics for improvement. Tony, I had a TKR early August and have to say your videos were a source of great information to support my recovery. In my mid-sixties, I was nervous about the recovery relating to the amount of flex I’d get as I was carrying knee damage into the procedure. I was also lucky to find a sturdy flexible knee brace that allowed me to build up my muscle strength and reduce weight prior to the procedure. That being said, whenever I was struggling to gain extension and bend, I referred to the various exercises you demonstrated and kept progressing. The best advise you gave though, was not to try too hard when it seemed i was getting no additional movement. You were right, give yourself a break and the additional flexibility does come. Thanks Tony.

4 weeks post op and I am walking without cane or crutch. Just trying to work out the small limp in my gait. I am constantly bending and straightening the knee when sitting and relaxing. I’m back to driving and going into the office part time. It still hurts yes but mainly I take OTC ibuprofen and maybe a stronger pill as needed at night when it hurts the most. Overall I’m glad I did the surgery and feel like my quality of life will be much improved having done so.

I like your videos. My total knee replacement surgery was 2017. The day after the surgery I had my first physical therapy session in the hospital, and CPM. Here in Germany you go 5, 6 days after total knee replacement surgery from hospital to a rehab hospital for 4 weeks a go. When you then at home again, you go 1. or 2 days a week to physical therapy and gym. My knee was stiffness the first 2 month after surgery, I was hard workt and had painful phisical therapy. Than I had a MUA, and after these I feel bad, and I had painful physical therapy again. It was so bat, that I hat another arthroskopy surgery, 6 month later. They said to me I had Arthrofibroses. After these surgery I worked hard again. The ROM 80 degrees flexion and 5 degrees extension. At September 2021 I had my last surgery to, not arthroskopy, they open the scar. Right now I go physical therapy and gym. The flexion are 80 degrees right now, extention 3 degrees.

I had a knee replacement on May 31 and a knee manipulation done in late July. My range of motion has inlet been 115 degrees, the goal was 120. Thus far, my therapist has been focusing now on my quads (right knee) and my knee bending has become less than 115 degrees, about 112 or 114. I'm concerned about this, and also about the stiffness I still feel when bending the knee. My question is, how long can I expect to be like this, and also--I do have the feeling of a tight band right below the knee. I still do the exercises required to continue the range of motion I still have and quad exercises. I am currently waking with a cane and feel safer with a walker. But what worries me out id that tight band feeling around the knee. Will this go away eventually?

Hi I had TKR in 2021 - with covid going to the physio was difficult. I did however do my exercises according to the physio I had in hospital. Unfortunately at around 24 months after surgery - my surgeon told me not to rush recovery because I had distal femoral osteotomy (DFO), combined with a high tibial osteotomy (an osteotomy of the proximal tibia) due to knock knees. I do not have much pain though, but still walk with cane/walker - I am very afraid of falling. I am 70 years old and the "other" knee still needs to be done, but I am still holding out - hydro therapy works very well for me.

I was moving just fine, walking every day, then on 20 Jan my Achillies tendon on the tkr leg flared up so much so that I had to go back to using the cane. I had my right TKR on Sept.6th, 23, so 9 weeks. I have more pain and swelling now than at 6 weeks. My flexion is only 115. My function is much greater for sure. Stairs, walking the dog, water exercise classes etc. But in the night the discomfort quite intense. This really worries me. I'm back to work as a massage therapist and am 67. I'm pretty frustrated. Actually I'm stressed out about my Dec.14 follow-up appointment. An MUA is absolutely of the question. I feel like PT was all strengthening. Zero soft tissue. It has been 7 weeks of the same boring repetitive stuff.

My surgeons office had everything arranged and authorized before my surgery. Home nurse, home PT and orders etc. were sent to my PT of choice for review of protocol.

First i love your channel. Question- if you have extension issues before a total knee procedure ( my preop extension was 15 degrees) will you have a harder time with flexion from walking with a bent knee before a TKR ? I had 2 falls over the years which made arthritis worse. Last one was by the pool. Ouch! I am an OR nurse who was lucky enough to be told by Ortho reps its the TKR that will straighten my leg at that point. . So i did because ALL the swimming of laps i did could not straighten my knee. I had Mako TKR- 2 mo PO . Extension is now 0 and flexion over 110 ish . My Surgeon wants me at 130 eventually. Cold weather gets me stiff lately like many. Can you address on your channel with tips & exercises for me & other patients with similar issues . Is future ROM flexion issues related to any preop extension issues???

I'm liking your videos.... I've continued to work as much as I can. I was a fitness instructor before surgery and thought I was in good shape. I have a goal, to get back to teaching, I didn't do anything for the 1st 2 weeks... I was too sick and couldn't get out of bed, no pain medication works for me. So I've gone without. at almost 12 weeks, I still don't have range of motion... I can only bend my knee about 100 degrees and can't extend it as far as I should either. Been doing lots of different exercises, going back to the Y a few weeks ago, (taking, not teaching) my Pilates and Yoga classes as well as standing Silver Sneakers classes (very similar to PT). I couldn't see a PT until almost 4 weeks, and that only lasted another 4 weeks, until they shut the clinic because of Covid. I'm going to go back starting next week (and see someone different) and I just feel stuck. I don't have the range of motion to teach my classes yet. I'm in a lot of pain most of the time. Doctor says I'm "healed"... incision looks good....but if I walk around the grocery store, my knee swells up and there is sharp pain on the knee cap (or what used to be my knee cap). Doc says my knee was in pretty bad shape... but it looks good now. What are my chances of getting this stiffness out and going back to teaching... I am so sad and so frustrated. What should I ask my new PT for help?

Good info thanks. I am 18 weeks post TKR. Good ROM but a little pain when I wake up. Working on getting strength back in leg. My Doctor told me at 9 weeks the soft tissue was healing but I didn’t ask him how long healing would take. Any ideas?

I am seven weeks out from surgery. My range of motion was 114 until I went to see my doctor and he grabbed my ankle and jammed it back towards my butt. Now my range of motion is 91 because of the swelling and pain. I’m using a lot of ice and pretty much just resting it now and doing more some walking. I have had moderate pain all along this journey. The pain has never stopped. I was put on gabapentin for the nerve pain and that helped some. I’m still doing my exercises when I can, but this just does not seem normal and the doctor is talking about putting me to sleep and bending my knee back till it breaks loose. This is scaring the hell out of me. I just don’t know what to do at this point.

Boy I guess I don’t need to feel guilty spending so much time napping and laying around 5 days post op. Doing my exercises and am only at 86-90 degrees. I am able to fully straighten. I go to PT in 30 minutes but I do not want to be a failure but I still have no quads strength. My knee occasionally buckles. And I can hardly lift my leg. I went into it in a weak state with pretty severe valgus deformity. And then I need to do the other leg. I have autoimmune arthritis Spondyloarthritis which many don’t realize effects womens peripheral joints as well as spine. So I get concerned about losing any mobility. I don’t want to be in that 20 percentile that fails. I have friends and my husband who all went to the same surgeon. One of our friends did not do well and still complains. 😮

I'd love to see some video on complex pre op knee issues that can make post Op more difficult. I had a manual manipulation and am at week 3. I felt I'm not getting proper instruction until seeing videos on this channel. I have found a huge amount of information in your videos. Am I the only person whose knee had many arthroscopies, surgeries and other treatments that were over 15 yrs before I got a knee replacement?

Im at week 9 ! Pain has just eased from about week 7 ! I am walking about the house without my cane but not confident enough to go out without it as I am still having problems with my knee bending from sitting to standing and vice versa ! I have been doing my exercises faithfully since surgery but when I try to get into the car, sit or stand my knee will not bend and I have to rest to get my balance ! It sometimes seems to give way at times ! Ive increased my knee bending exercises and it mite be improving slightly ! Is this normal at this stage as Im getting quite disheartened ? Thanx for your videos they are very helpful but I feel at this stage I should be doing more 😢

Hi Tony! I'm almost 3 months post op with my TKR and I had some other health issues going on in recovery. This prolong my physical therapy by 2 months. I have a lot of stiffness and pain leg will not straighten out all the way. This pain at night is bad no rest. My Dr wants to do a manipulation but right now I'm not comfortable with being put to sleep again. My therapist trying to get me the Extensionator knee brace I hope I'm saying this right. Do you think it's a good idea.

I am at 2 weeks today after tkr. With a "pain ball". On day 2, I was at 110 degrees. On day 3 the pain ball was removed. I swelled a bunch and have not gotten back to even 90 degrees. But close. PT is very painfully when bending my fat knee. I am on warfarin so no anti flam drugs. There is some talk about using steroids to reduce the swelling. Is this a good idea? Or should I just expect it to take longer?

Tony, (and others). Just completed week 8 post recovery. Graduated from PT on Friday. My flex is ok at 123 but my extension is not good. It tends to be 5-8 degrees when just laying down. After stretching, using the band and the 20 lb sack I can grind it down to 3 degrees. I have read that improving extension is very hard after 6 weeks and full extension is important to reduce hip and leg problems going forward. I am worried…should I be?

Hello, I am at 9 th week out and still doing two days a week P/T, I had my left knee replaced, is it a good idea to join a gym for the days am no at P/T? Doing leg exercises. I need to return to work in three weeks, and have very physical job, thanks
@totaltherapysolutions
@totaltherapysolutions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, it really just depends on whether or not you think you will use the gym membership. A lot of clinics will allow you to pay a membership fee to come use the equipment on non-therapy days. If you have a physical job be sure to mention it to your therapist and ask to start doing job specific activities in therapy to prepare yourself for return to work.

It is very very difficult to get ROM but can a person manage with ROM which it takes without assistance of Physiotherapy after 1 month therapy.
@totaltherapysolutions
@totaltherapysolutions 2 жыл бұрын
There are lots of reason for ROM to be limited. It isn't just scar tissue. In fact, many times I find other reasons like pain, swelling, sensitivity at the incision are more limiting than scar tissue. Yes, you can always improve range of motion with or without a physiotherapist. The main purpose of a therapist is to help answer questions and monitor your progress.

This is so scary for me because I’m at 4 months and I have pretty sharp lateral pain by my kneecap when I’m going down stairs or getting up from sitting. It does seem worse after yoga or weights. It’s fine with spinning. Do I go back to PT? Im currently working with a corrective exercise trainer.

How about the lymphatic system it a total knee replacement surgery. Eight months and at night I have veins sticking up on my knee replacement Quad. Then when I get up and move around in diminishes and during the day nothing. The back of the knee hurts and now the right one because it had to take over for the weak left. I usually ice it 3-4 times a day. P as in level is around 3 but if I walk or exercise it can be a 5-6 in the middle of the night and stuff in the morning.

Hello, I had a multiple knee fracture many years ago. Now I an on my third athroscopy and they said: look ..you will solve the problem ( as it always hurth) If you do a total replacment. I had last September also part of the meniscus cut. I an ready, I know What fisiotherapy will need mostly psicologicly as I know very painful. My question for You: I would like to go and do the Camino, it is If You dont know , a nearly 800 km to Santiago de Compostela. I would do it If My knee will hurt BUT would t be better do it after the knee replacment? My dou t is: and If something get wrong ( I an not a luckywperson...) and could not do it later? I walk daily 10-15 km so I know I will take My time and do it .What do You think? Will I stress My knee too much doing it now ? I think: ok, I an going to replace it anyway so do the Camino now...but I am not so dire to do the right thing. Sorry for the long post.

If you weren’t in good shape (strength, flexibility and with proper weight) prior to the TKR surgery, the more suffering and discomfort you’ll experience and for a longer period after surgery. It’s that simple.
