I am 76, going to have surgery in about a month, and I’m doing my due diligence as to what to expect. A minor complication foreseen is that I am deaf. Your posting with the narrative shown while you speak is very beneficial for me and perhaps more since knee surgery seems prevalent in seniors and many seniors are also deaf. Many thanks.

Without a doubt this is the best and most encouraging video I have seen. My total knee replacement was December 27 . At this moment I am sitting in my bed with tears in my eyes wondering why my knee is so swollen and I feel as if I have lost all the progress I was making. Yesterday because I was feeling bad that my husband wanted to get out of the house I agreed to go out and shop with him. After going to the bank, Aldi, the library, Marshall’s, and an hour in Kroger I couldn’t figure out why my entire leg was in so much pain. I’m not saying this to blame my husband I’m saying this to let this be a lesson to stop trying to please others because you’re starting to feel like a burden. I need to start respecting my limitations during the healing process. Thank you for a great video.

I had mine on Jan. 9th and the tightness and stinging are causing a lot of pain and anxiety. They won't let me take any more pain meds after today. I do all the PT and exercises, icing and Elevating. I can only sleep on my back in one position which makes it hard to sleep. I was losing hope and feeling very discouraged. This video helped

Keep up with the PT, I promise a little pain now is sooo worth it to get the mobility back. Also like you mentioned, take your time and know your going to get frustrated. I'm 6 months post and still get frustrated. I walk at my own pace and if others in the group want to walk faster... go for it, I'll see you when I get there! Also ice, ice and more ice! I finally stopped using my ice machine after about 4 months

I had a TKR 14 months ago. I’m a 73 year old woman lives alone so I went to a rehabilitation hospital for five weeks to do physiotherapy. My surgeon told me to have a week to think about it before I had the surgery done because he said it would be the worst pain I would ever endure, but I had no choice because I was walking bone and bone and was on crutches for a couple of months before the surgery. It’s now 14 months and since the surgery I have had excruciating pain which has never improved despite my constant physio exercises and pain pills do not help at all and I cannot walk for more than an hour without being totally crippled with Pain and I have to get up in the night to ice my knee and the pain radiates all up and down my leg and on both sides front and back and up to my thigh I told my Surgeon I could not go on like this because I was very active before that as an emergency nurse and now I feel like I’m totally disabled despite doing everything I was told to do from my physiotherapy in the rehabilitation hospital my surgeon said that the prosthetic was in the position but I have had so many falls whereby I have fractured my neck in two places. I have fractured my ribs in the back where I fell and also fractured ribs in the front with another fall and I have had more falls and I can remember and many concussions which resulted in extra swelling lacerations and pain everywhere including my back where I compressed some discs. My leg always feels like I have a tight compression bandage on it and every time I fall, because my knee gives way without notice, my other knee gets injured too. I cannot kneel on it at all. It’s difficult to move my leg in bed as it feels like a dead wright so I have to help move it with my hands. The same goes for getting in and out of cars The Surgeon does not know why I’m having all these falls, but my knee just gives away on me and I have not been off crutches for the full 14 months, I am due to go into hospital again in a month and he is going to take the prosthetic out and put a different type in where it is more stabilised on each side of my knee and I am absolutely petrified because the pain was so bad postop and it really has never got any better so I’m really not looking forward to it at all but I do not want to be disabled when I’ve been such an active person all my life. I really wish I’d never had it done as I followed every rule and I don’t take pain pills because they don’t work so it’s just basically icing it and elevating it, if you have any more ideas to help me before and after I have the next surgery, I would most appreciate it because it’s basically ruined my life and caused me to be isolated at home and not able to go out and enjoy myself with friends as I can’t even go out for dinner and sit in a chair with my Knee bent for very long it’s just too painfulso my quality of life and my mental health has been awful. I’d appreciate any help you can offer me thank you.😢

Dr. Smith, you were spot on. I'm a few weeks shy of 1 year post op and am 67 years old. I'm a very active senior, so the idea of exercising during recovery was something I didn't have to fight or wrestle with. There were moments during the 1st several months I thought I made a bad decision and would be a cripple (pain, stiffness, muscle weakness, etc.). Then one day, around the 6th or 7th month things changed. My knee is virtually pain free by and large, for the most part feels normal, and much stronger than prior to surgery. It took nearly a full year to get to this point. Thank you for sharing as people need to know this surgery is very painful and has a subsequent long recovery.

Left TKR on 7 5 23 ...today is 11 6 23 . .that 4 months and my Dr said every surgery is different .... cuz the one 3 years ago was a breeze ( I think) ... my only fear is that unbreakable scar tissue will develop as I move into month 5 ... Dr , if you read these comments, know that I'm at 120° + 1 or 2 °& I am resigned to the fact that my heels will never touch my butt again ....is that an OK future expectation ???

It does help to know the " why's" of the stiffness. One must be patient and try to move as much as possible. It does take time. I have found solace in walking and graduated from a walker to a walking stick. Also I just started swimming and walking the lazy river. That helps me get the cobwebs and negativity out of my head, too! It's easy to feel discouraged. Thank you for your video and encouragement. I had a knee surgery several years ago, and it took at least a five years to get the feeling back in all of my nerves. I was more active then and didn't feel as much pain as I do now. It's a process. Celebrate your victories!

Thank you for this information. I had a knee replacement on June 4, 2024. My knee is so stiff, and painful. My leg has not straightened out, and when I walk my knee is bent, and I walk with a limp. I’m using a cane. I’m frustrated, and I felt down because honestly I thought the surgery didn’t work. I’m glad to know the stiffness is normal, and that the process as well as healing can take some time. My physical therapist gave me home exercises to help my leg straighten out. At this time I have changed my mind about getting my other knee done.

As a fellow PT that has had both knees replaced within 9 months in the past year+, TY for this terrific reminder! Patience is not my greatest asset, and there were more post op ‘issues’ with the 2nd knee…medication and a severe adhesive reaction, yuck! Plodding along, some days discouraged, but you have reminded me of the need for patience and continued, gradual activity increases! Keep up the great work!! 🙏🏼

Great Video and wonderful explanation. Had my TKR in August '22 so I'm only a little over 6 months. The stiffness and swelling gets to me every once in awhile but remembering the pain I went through before the surgery makes the stiffness and swelling seem very minor. Still get frustrated not being able to do things like kneel without a big cushion, but at home PT was/is my saving grace as well as a wife who keeps reminding me that I had a major surgery and to take my time. I'm back to Walking 1.5 - 3 miles a day, and walking up and down 4 flights of stairs at least once a day. Best thing I ever did and yes, that includes my kids LOL

Most importantly we have to do our exercises at home faithfully for a great recovery 🙏 💪

Really great explanation. Thank you. More honesty, information and helpful advice in this 7 minute video than 4-5 appointments with my surgeon. I was anxious that 6 weeks post op, the knee was still very swollen and I was in some discomfort. I felt that there was something significantly wrong with me. This video has really helped and reassured me. I guess every knee replacement patient has their own personal story of hardship, struggle and pain. Both physical and mental. But the key takeaway, is that it's normal. It's a long journey back to full recovery. Good Luck.

Great, and informative video. My total knee replacement was at the end of Nov 2022 and I'm really pleased with the results. The message I keep hearing is that patience is the real game changer. I have made the mistake of going too fast, too soon, and my knee really let me know. I have now backed off and, as you say, it has improved. I am now taking it much slower and it is definitely the way forward. Thanks again Dr Sam' :)

I had my right knee replacement last month February 23 this year 2023. I get very depressed at times wondering if I’ll ever get that range of motion back. But I’m praying and trusting that God will bring me through this. It’s a scary feeling because you wonder will this knee get back or at least somewhat get back to having range of motion. I really had no choice but to get it done because it was at the point where I was dragging it while at work. I worked in housekeeping so having to walk most of the day all I could do was come home and get in the bed for the rest of the day. This video has encouraged me to realize that it will take some time. That it is normal to feel all the stiffness that I’m feeling. I have an ice machine that helps in keeping the swelling down. THANK FOR THIS ENCOURAGING VIDEO👍

I am one year & 7 months out from a left knee replacement. I still get stiffness, however it is much better. It was a long journey to get to this point. I was diagnosed with AFIB 5 months after the replacement and had to go on blood thinners. They caused me so much joint pain. I ended up getting a Watchman device put into my heart to get off the blood thinners. I finally get off of the blood thinners in August and hoping my knee will feel even better after that. I need to get the other knee replaced but will wait until later this year or early next year. Thank you for all your helpful videos. ❤

I just had TKA on my left knee 3 weeks ago today. My PT is upset with me because I'm not at a 90° bend yet, but I have reached 85°and held for 2 seconds before it hurt too much. I'm able to walk about 1/4 mile which takes about 25min before it gets too painful. I asked why it was so stiff, but PT and my doctors refuse to answer me. This video helped me so much. I'm starting to feel like the medical team I have doesn't care. This made so much sense.

Had my right knee replaced in Feb 21. It is such a tough journey but for a change I decided to actually follow ALL the physio’s advice and it paid off. I recovered well. So now I’m 18 days post op on my left knee and yes it’s tough ( again ) but I’m actually recovering quicker this time due to the experience of having my right knee done. The biggest thing I’ve learned is you just can’t push it to try recover faster. You HAVE to follow the program and you have to pace it. Rest and icing are as important as any exercise.

Great video. I am four weeks post-surgery and have worked diligently multiple times a day. I shed the Walker and cane at two weeks post-surgery. Although very stiff at times I have full range of motion bending and almost there going straight. I have been shopping, shoveled snow (I know a no-no), and walking stairs normally. If I do more than an hour of activity I am fatigued, swollen, and stiff for about the next 24 hours. Therapy is uncomfortable folks but you must push yourself and do it for the good in the long run. Once this knee is ready then it’s on to the other knee in 2023.

It’s a shame your doctor didn’t discuss doing both knees at one time like I did. It’s one recovery!!! To be a good candidate, you must be in must be a good physical shape and not have a lot of comorbidities. And you need a great caregiver for the first two weeks. I was blessed to have that! I can’t imagine going through two surgeries, and two recoveries. Way too much time out of my life. I am 10 weeks out and doing great. Did my PT daily. And had my hubby put my bike on a stand and started riding when PT allowed, 4 weeks I think. I’m a 63 yr old female.

He was shocked I was doing so well. Let me tell you, I am so thankful for that! I had my first follow up visit today and the doctor said I was doing amazing, and he said my range of motion was good. However, he did want me to get some OP Physical Therapy, which I am happy to do. He also said I could drive when I felt like I was able to. On that I will take some short trips (even if it's circling my driveway first), to make sure I can manage okay. It is my right knee that was replaced. I still take some Tylenol and occasional Tramadol. Cannot handle that Oxy stuff. Ugh!! I took two tablets, not at the same time!), and they may have helped the pain, but they made me so jittery, and I did not rest or sleep after taking them, so I just sat them aside. I do still ice some and still have some glue on my suture line. Hearing about this stiffness makes me more eager to get to OP PT! Hope you can soon get to sleeping better. I put a pillow, the long way, under my leg last night and that seemed to help. Good luck to you on your journey!!

I have just found your KZbin channel. Wish I had seen this earlier. You are explaining so many more questions about knee surgery and the feeling after the operation. I have had my second one done two weeks ago and doing the majority of the exercises I have been given. Your explanation on stiffness is now helping me understand it so much better. I am now following your routine to help with trying to get my knee bending more a bit at the time. Thank you so much for doing such a great job.

I am at my 9 months to date..After 6 months when my Physical Therapy ended...my range of motion was 132 degrees. At 6 months...I integrated the gym with my Therapy...I only hear clicking in my knee when I put on my shoes...I don't have any pain at this point...My hope is that at the 1 year point...I will no longer realize that I have a Knee Replacement...P.S..I attended 90% of my therapy sessions...If you were my therapist...I would of attended 100%.

I am so glad I found your channel. I am 3days post TKR revision. Gee what a difference a surgeon can make! Yes I said surgeon. 4 years ago I had. TKR on my right knee. It has been the knee from hell. Luckily I have a little more knowledge about expectations, but now I’m angry they did not take my complaints seriously and just said sometimes it happens or you need to exercise more. It’s frustrating! Anyway I listening to your every word! Thanks for this video!

Thank you Dr. Smith I'm 8 weeks post total knee replacement, I just had my 12th session of physical therapy and my knee isn't responding well due to chronic stiffness and pain. 2 weeks ago the surgeon told me that if my knee is not bending greater than what it is in the next 6 weeks he's taking me back to surgery for manipulation. I'm currently bending between 90/101. Bending increase and decrease. The therapist told me that my knee is not responding to PT and I should consider having the manipulation sooner. I'm not sleeping due to pain and chronic stiffness and the surgeon does not prescribe pain medication after 5 weeks which adds to my issue. I'm terrified to have the procedure. I'm desperately seeking answers on what I can do for chronic stiffness. I'm falling into depression which has never been apart of me. I'm 65 and healthy, and I'm just trying to get back to work and work my way until retirement. I apologize for the long comment, but I needed to explain my situation. Thank you, and God bless. Barb

I had the stiffness and my leg wouldn't straighten out enough. Had Knee Replacement surgery on Feb 6. Surgeon suggested a "Manipulation" which i had on April 12. Need more PT and more at home exercises. Need a leg brace for an hour during the day and a straightening leg brace when I go to bed. New script for Oxy and take my XSTylenol. Braces for only about a month.. Only 2-3 percent of the people have this issue, but my MO is "if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all"!

I am 12 weeks bilateral TKR and attend PT 3x and acupuncture 1x week. I’ve reached btw 120-130 flexion a couple of times during PT. I need pain medication after PT and to help me sleep. My two biggest problems is stiffness and my back. Stiffness sets in regularly upon sitting or standing within minutes. I previously had lower back issues and would need chiropractic adjustment and decompression from time to time. Sleeping on my back for 12 weeks has caused sciatic issues along with becoming very stiff during the night. Sitting and laying on my side triggers the sciatica. I have to remind myself it’s only been 12 weeks - I’ve become very impatient, I’m tired of hurting. I’m working on strengthening my quads and butt muscles hoping to relieve this pain. Thank you for the wealth of information you provide.

Very helpful video series. I just found these 6 weeks post surgery. I think I am glad to have found them now rather than before because my path has been pretty different. I walked out of the surgery and post six hours after I went in. Home that afternoon. I pre planned my life for food and everything but one thing. I forgot to get the wood stove ready for the fire. With snow and cold, it was very needed. So I started out as soon as I got home making fire and dinner. In two days, I was on my Honda Ranch quad doing some light riding. Showers and everything a normal day would be by the Sunday after. (Surgery was on a Thursday). PT came to the house the day after surgery and set up some good exercises for me. My thinking has always been to get back to a normal routine as soon as you can. Showers, brush your teeth. Clean clothes. Be as normal as you can be. And since I live alone, I have no choice. Pre plan for a few weeks of food, life and get back into it. Certainly not for everyone. (And my sister is the complete opposite of me in her thinking). I never took any of the pain meds. Sure, I had pain. That is your body telling you to slow down. Yes, I had swelling and redness. Yes, I iced and elevated but only a few times a day. I rested when I thought I needed to. Cut fire wood when I needed to. Took care of the house and critters everyday. At two weeks, I was 110 and close to flat. At 6 weeks, this week, I was flat and 120-125 ROM. Swelling is almost gone. Redness is gone. I have had two X-rays and two Ultrasounds to check for blood clots. All good. Used the walker only to get stabile after getting out of bed the first two weeks. Never touched the cane. I guess the point is people, if there is one........this will pass and you'll be back to normal soon. Listen to your body as well as Dr. Sam and your own PT and doctor. I said from the beginning that this was not a big deal. Doctor and PT said it most certainly is but I still tell myself that is was not. I'm 72 years old. No idea what is next for me but I know I don't have 50 years left so make these days count. I got a clean check up at 6 weeks with an appt to check back in in 60 days. PT said increase my home PT as I need to......and have fun with it. I have been driving for four weeks and working for two. And to celebrate a great check up, I took my little dog, Scooter, for a motorcycle ride around the local area. (Slow and about 5 miles on a little trail 125. He sits in a milk crate on the back seat). Was I nervous about doing that?? Sure. But did it ever feel good to check that box. Man, I felt great. Can't wait for another chance of dry weather to go ride longer. Ok......there can be great success stories for TKR surgery. Do I want another knee surgery???........nope. But will approach it the same way if I do need one. Good luck everyone. You will win!!!!!!!!!!!

my surgery was Dec 12. My PT is great. I was able to bend my knee at 114 angle. Last time couple days ago it was so stiff I could only do 108. Plus the hardest is straightening my leg. This video gave me hope. Thank you. I was in tears today because I only have 1 prescription left. I had a friend take me around to do errands couple days ago. I wanted to go to 4 places. I managed 2. Not getting enough sleep. PLUS I'm a care giver for my husband. He and friends have been great help. So you think no heat just ice. I do sleep with pillow under both legs to elevate. ON MY BACK. No pillow under head helps. Otherwise my shoulders hurt and hands go numb. My left knee is now acting up. NOT going through this again. I have diabeties and fiybromialgia and it will take longer to heal. I was depressed today in tears. Husband said to take a nap. I was sleeping good had to get up for bathroom then realized it was time to fix dinner. Anyway I don't want to be a complainer. Just wanted to know I'll be going through your videos.

Thank you great video. One year in after total knee replacement. I asked my surgeon a couple times if it was possible to reject implant. He never really answered me. But your video answered my question fully. It is a journey and everyone is different and similar at the same time. I recently started having a lot of stiffness again after a year, even though I exercise, walk, hike and swim. Apparently I still need to keep up with the range of movement exercises.

I’m at 6 weeks post TKR and just hit 100 degrees of flexion yesterday. I don’t have much pain, but currently have a lot of stiffness on the outer part of my knee. I'm at 8 weeks from total replacement and stiffness and pain are still a problem. Sitting with knee bent for over a few minutes causes undue pains and I have to straighten it out. My leg feels overly tired at end of every day no matter how much or little I do. I can't tolerate opioids so meds were of no use following surgery. Tylenol is all I take and it's not enough. I did all my therapy and got the range of motion expected. I hope others do better. My experience is not great. Honestly it hurt less before surgery. I will never do the other knee.

I think a lot of individuals, when they get a major operation like this, they question how good the doctor did with the replacement.. Because we just don't know. We can assume the surgeon did a great job. But it isn't like they're going to tell us if they didn't really do a great job on your knee lol if they didn't)). Sometimes I think people worry about how well the surgery went, in reality. As compared to normal pain and swelling from a knee replacement. This is why I'm glad we have videos like this to explain things in more detail. Not to mention, this is one of the most violent surgeries I've ever watched (youtube). I was very taken back at how much trauma the knee and bones are getting during the surgery. So there's no surprise there is a ton of swelling. I get my first new replacement this November lol. I actually can't wait..

We are away from home and my PT, cross country for a month. I try to do the exercises PT gave me and walk. I take the Tylenol twice a day but try to avoid the pain meds, the Oxy, unless the pain gets really bad. I thought I was doing something wrong till I saw your video, that gave me a little hope.
