FFS has impacted bass fishing in a way that is not good for the sport. I have bee fishing most of my life and sure it would be nice to have a tool that helps me catch more fish. But FFS while it does present you with the opportunity to see and catch more fish, it has eliminated the need for skill on the angler. You shouldn’t have to spend 4000 to try and stay competitive. I venture to say that the weights and number of fish being caught would not be as high if FFS was not allowed in a tournament. I used to enjoy watching any of the pro tour anglers, but not any more. It isn’t fun watching an angler staring at his array of graphs and only look up to make sure they aren’t going to hit something. Fishing is supposed to be a challenge, something that takes time to learn how fish respond to conditions, to learn how colors, water clarity all play a role in whether you are successful or not. Now with all that being said, I do see where FFS would be a positive addition to a boat. Guide services, these folks are working hard to find fish for their clients. FFS gives them an advantage. But it should not be exploited during a tournament . Let all anglers have the same playing field. Work for the fish you catch. Some will argue we are working for the fish we catch, ask yourself this question, how many fish would you have caught if you had to do it without FFS. It is a complicated question but the impact on fishing is being felt in all major areas of the sport and not in a good way.

I'll tell you one thing..I don't watch tournament fishing anymore...it's boring as hell to watch because of it. Ignore the emotions, and the "logic"...look at the facts, the facts are giants and big numbers are being caught like never before and they are being negatively affected by it. I have lived and fished all over this country and I can tell you with 100% certainty that fishing has gotten harder, and worse since FFS became so prevalent, although I am sure the added pressure from more ppl fishing has a lot to do with it also. I don't think it has any place in tournaments, I can pretty confidently say if you don't have it you have a very tough uphill battle competing against people that do have it in most fisheries...but ppl are gonna do what they're gonna do, I'll worry about myself. That's my .02 cents.

People are catching more fish with FFS. On smaller 2000 acre size lakes that are already pressured, it is decimating the quality of fish. When FFS became popular the tournament big bass on my local lake went from 6-8lbs to 9-12lbs. Now for the past two years the big bass went to 5-7lbs. And thats just the tournament fish. Where I did catch 2-3lb bass, they are now 1 lb bass. FFS is ruining fisheries and the sport in general.

I see both sides, as for the cost I bought and installed my self a Garmin 106sv and ls34 transducer for $2700. After using it 1 season I’ve learned the power of this technology first hand. It’s a huge advantage! As a local club level angler in certain lakes and type of fishing if you don’t have it your chances of competing consistently in a two day plus event without it are very low. That being said I do enjoy it and it’s fun learning new things. But I could see a day where is banned from tournaments.

Unfortunately my first two boats were less than $2,500 each boat motor and trailer.Back then i could be competitive at that investment level. And won a few Derby's. There was not a big difference between what the top pros were using and the average guy. I don't believe there has been a more effective single item ever for catching fish then ffs. Most all sports regulate the gear used in competition. To keep a level playing field and to honor the records that have been set in the past. For instance In baseball no one would care about the home run record if the bat technology changed every year to make it hit the ball further. Ultimately we would create a sport that has no past or future. And this seems to be the problem bass fishing as a whole has. Competition has rules that's why there's a time that you start and a time that you end and rules that you follow in between. We can have an Open class where you can use any technology . And start that as a new series to fish. Then it will be it's own thing . Have it's own rules and new records to set under their rules. Just my two cents

I wonder what people would think if I got a screen, and transducer, strapped a battery to my side and put it on a stick. I'm a bank angler. And walked around with it, like a selfie stick. And as i walked the bank I would throw the transducer in the water before I cast inorder to find a fish. I'm sure people would think i looked like an idiot. Well that's what these guys look like on tv, the only difference is they are hooked up to a moving rig (boat) that just happens to sit on the water. Its idiotic and should be banned. But you know what, we live in a world of idiots, so it wouldn't surprise me to see some guy walking around all hooked up like that one day when i go fishing. Wouldn't be surprised at all. I see all these guys with all of that crap hooked up to a kayak!! Not Realizing how dumb that is, if that kayak tips over, and they often do. There goes all of your expensive crap, and good luck trying to flip your kayak back over. Very dangerous and dumb.

FFS isn’t having any more of an impact on bass fishing overall than the additional pressure from increasing popularity. There is still a very small percentage of fish that are caught. At the pro level they will only make a change to the use of FFS if viewership declines significantly enough. Professional fishing is just advertising and marketing so as long as viewership is where it needs to be and tackle sales are where they need to be then they are not going to make a change.

I think when it comes to competition, the only way I think to keep it and to be fair is to have an equal amount of events without and with it, the whole day. None of this 2 hours with it.. Its sorta like when Bass picks lakes in their schedule across the USA that does not favor someones techniques. Smallie events for Largemouth anglers. Tidal conditions. etc. West coast fisheries. Make it fair for both.

FFS helps you understand the fish with how they react to certain lures. It doesn't catch the fish but helps you learn the mood of the fish with certain lures. You still have to know what lure they will react to. Also it let's you know where not to cast which maximizes your time. For the pros I would say put a time limit on FFS let the pros use it for half of the tournament time then old school the other half.

If you can’t cash a check with your skills or those electronics, you just need to get a day job. FFS is fine , I’ve seen it on a friend’s boat and to me it’s 50/50 , as it is to you. But you’re not going to control what people do in this field unless the tournament directors do something about it themselves. Just my two cents. God bless

FFS has made finding fish in areas I never considered easier and also changed the way I fish. I don't cast to areas without fish. Now I still pound shorelines and weed beds and docks like I always have but I never knew so many fish were on off shore structure. When I do locate fish in these new areas I tend to spend too much time catching one fish, targeting them but I also try new techniques that I've never done and found how effective they can be (drop shot, countdown rapalas, ned rigs). Also I have learned a tremendous amount about fish behavior from day to day, while they are in the same location, they react differently day to day and even hour to hour depending on conditions. I spend a lot more time "looking" for fish on my electronics these days but catching more fish.

It’s going to be hard to remove. The amount of money these fishing organizations get from these companies is huge and there is more than likely some contractual verbiage in the agreement between the electronics companies and bass fishing organizations that will be a breach of contract if they ban them. Now, maybe things will change once it comes time to renew.

BLat, ffs is not easy, but it’s easier. Locating fish using a screen is not hard. Especially compared to understanding the season, weather, boat traffic, patterns, water temp, fluctuating water levels, etc. I know it doesn’t catch the fish, but it sure puts you on top of them, throwing to fish and not just hauling water. It needs to be banned in competition. It’s not fishing. It takes far less skill to catch fish with ffs than without. That’s not an opinion, that’s just fact.

FFS should be banned period, not just in tournaments. It's not much different than spotlighting for deer. Our fish stocks are already under way too much pressure and FFS is going to compound that problem. It's not just regarding bass, crappie, walleye. trout and any other sport fish will face the same pressure. Meat fishers will love it. I enjoy eating crappie, etc. too but they are going to be adversely affected by the hammering they are taking due to FFS. Incidental fish kill rates will go up as well. More fish caught means more fish killed in tournaments, and don't try to tell me the incidental kills aren't significant .

It’s funny to me what tournaments allow and don’t. FFS is allowed but you can’t use an underwater camera which is really stupid. I tried FFS now a few times and it didn’t feel sporting to me. So won’t be buying one but I also quit tourney fishing and just go fun fishing. My biggest worry is about large predator fish populations as they are low density to start with and targeting individual fish is already proving detrimental. Bass is a very small part of the equation to me. $3800 or 20,000 is not important to me. I wouldn’t spend $500 for this technology. It’s legal so scope away if you like looking at the screen all day. I look at enough screens already for work.

Nobody needs ffs nobody needs a boat or graphs or whatever else the can come up with it is what people WANT thats the problem. I wanted ffs so i figured out a way to get it used with used graphs and a used box and transducer. I didnt need to switch my batterys to lithium 2 years ago but i wanted them because i knew that i was going to get all of it eventually. So i ran my fortrex off of them and cussed it everytime i wanted to have spot lock. Everyone wants to keep up with the jones's and have the best and coolest stuff but for some and myself included it is not in the cards right now and may never be so i do what i can with what i got. As far as ffs being a cheat code my opinion is if you like it use it if you dont then dont use it 🤷

the more i get into the rules of the elite and BPT, the more i can see they have so many worse cheating issues than FFS, i dont think its real fishing but i also dont fish for a living so who cares. If the anglers are that fed up that they think rules need to change they can band together and make it happen, but i dont think the majority of people who fish for a living are against it. love that you are real as always and before you hopped on the FFS bandwagon you got facts, stated facts and then gave your opinion. no clickbait titles ever from you and i love that.

Dude, try telling that to Drew Gill. He’s maybe the best in the business with FFS and has 1 FFS transducer. And some incredible FFS guys like John Soukup are struggling. FFS is no guarantee of success, and you don’t need anywhere near $20K or even $5k to get FFS and use it effectively.

As a pro, FFS might be necessary to even have a chance at winning money, but that’s the problem… skill and live if fishing disappear, and now it’s just a job, made easier with FFS and livescope… add the ridiculous cost of boats/engines…-and it’s out of control… Ha Just wait until Harris gets in the WH and shuts down oil production and gas gets too costly or scarce… the sport of boating and fishing goes away completely! Good luck with that!

hmm all good points. Just because an angler doesn’t understand technology should it be banned. Not saying a trolling motor is hard but if someone could not figure out the pedal - we ban trolling motors? I know I’m grasping but I think its a tool and an innovation no different than side scan and down scan (but its just more complex). Not 1 person complained (even Randy B) 20 years ago when side scan first came out. And then when people used sonar for drop shotting I never heard anyone call it cheating or spotlighting (I mean you are technically doing the same thing downward as we do with FFS forward). FFS has just come into a sport and has taken over making seasoned anglers out of touch and irrelevant - that’s their fault. Keep up with innovation or pass the torch to the next guy. Next year they come out with this super creative lure that dominates tournaments but not everyone can fish effectively with the lure -- anglers complain - do we then ban it because not everyone can use it like the next angler? Plenty blame FFS for the decline in viewers but really????? Professional fishing is boring to watch - sorry but if you spend your weekend glued to a TV and watch all 5 hours of the live coverage on Saturday and Sunday - you have issues. Years ago we watched taped 30 minute BASS shows detailing a tournament that took place the week before or weeks before. We are in the age of information overload……. I see nothing wrong with FFS. To me its made BASS more exciting because you actually see people catch fish. Do we all remember how boring the Classic was when it was in Pittsburg.

I do remember that tournament. It was exciting to me . I have been in that situation a few times. It was awesome to see how the pros deal with a tuff fishery. The tournaments with the lowest overall weights are the ones that are the most meaningful skill wise . I learned a lot from watching the guys fish that day. I don't get anything from fish caught off their graph . FFs is something you can do 365 days a year and only have a few baits to master. Without it one has to master 20-30 different techniques and seasonal movements. Scope eliminates the need for all of that. Which cuts years of time off of learning. And pros that spent the time and money learning the old ways Find them self left behind. Ask your self how many video games would you lose to your kids if it was a baseball game. And how many would win in real life.
