2015 is approaching,we're still "hanging in there" and are beginning the hard work of producing materials for our first music release.. The next couple of years should prove most exciting with studio hard and software upgrades, composing, filming, copyrighting, marketing etc.. :)

Solid advice (as usual) and good to hear an experienced mid-level engineer reaffirming the need for practice/work ethic/etc as part of their realistic long term goals. Both in the art AND the biz. I began on a cassette 4tk, and the basic principles for gain structure, EQ, etc were all in place for me by the time affordable Digital Home Recording came around. Do it folks, work at it...learn, learn...always more to learn. Cheers-M

Great Video, just as all other in Your profile! The sad truth is that there is not enough room for music producers, mixers etc. in the market, even very talented ones. And Your Site is the Very Best Example of This.... Couple of years ago We (producers) didn't have time even time to eat .... and now the only way to use Our skills is to teach others, who'll never have chance to make any money of it regardless of their level. Please don't delete my post - I really appreciate what You do Man, I'm just worried of all people wasting their time and money on new gear....

Thanks Graham for being so earnest and busting myths! At the end of the day, if you enjoy making music, you will find a way around everything relevant to music making! Home recording is what many have to resort to - simply because labels aren't going to sign everybody! But the joy that you get from producing your own stuff is just awesome! It's a thrill only every producer will know! Thanks Graham for great informative stuff .. Keep em coming! God Bless ..

Man i gotta say, what you are doing is really really great. You put a lot of work into these videos, and it's all to help others. Me and my bandmate actually just started recording local artists and we started charging from the beginning. I have learned a lot from your videos and wanted to let you know that you greatly motivate others with videos like this. Thanks and have a great day sir!

Wow! Thanks Graham! I know this video is a little old but helpful none the less.I'm so determined to get started in doing this even part time for now. I've been wanting to do audio recording, mixing and mastering for years but always made excuses for not being more serious about pursuing my dream and passion. I don't have any gear but I plan getting some and I plan on taking an audio course with a notable studio. I know it's not required to be in this business by most but I want to be around notable professionals in the business because I want do this professionally full-time one day. So thanks for the motivation and encouraging and down to earth advice and keep doing your thing sir!

SO I'm 3 years late on commenting, but still. For me, it comes down to as soon as you can record a clean input signal, you can start charging. If you have a good wav file, the rest is a matter of investing personal time to make things sound good together. Your $/hour wages will be very low to start (ie, you charge someone $100 to record/mix a song that takes you 20 hours to mix), but you get better, and just as long as your source audio is clean you are fine.

Hey graham, great video as always bro. Been following n learning a lot from u. M a guitar player n a student of music n m starting to record n mix my guitar covers, or any guitar recordings over backing tracks. I will be a professional recording n mixing engineer n will be a performing artist myself. I said "I will" cause there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that i will make music professionally. As i cant record drums n other instruments except my guitar, so m trying to just mix drums n bass along through plugins, so that when i can record real drums, I have already gained experience. Anyways, as u said i'd rather try n try n try n fail in music, than to choose any other profession that i'm not interested in..

I wish I could do audio full time. Living in a small isolated town there are hardly no bands to record and the bands that are around do not want to pay for recording/mixing. Ohh well I'll just continue to hone my craft and produce my own material.

Very good advice! Your videos are helping newbies like me. Thanks. I have a small question. Many times I faced a weird question (even before listening any of my work) from people "Oh! So you are going to record? From where have you studied sound engineering?" And as I say, "I've learned by experience", then they are like "Oh, then you'll need to call some senior sound engineer just to make sure you are doing right things!" How should I response them?

Hi Graham, I got a question that is a bit off-topic, it concerns Audio Interfaces. I have a Line 6 UX1 (pretty cheap box I got when just starting out), and I record guitar using a dynamic mic. Would upgrading to a different Audio Inteface (like say Scarlett 2i2) influence the quality of my recordings?

Hey Graham, i've been working towards starting my business and just trying to start getting job hit me like a fucking brick wall. Nobody wants to give their stuff out of hands even if you offer to do it for free. I'm quite confused, just writing songs to mix myself as exaples but my workflow is quite nitpicky and slow (composing and mixing wise) so i spend 20-40 hours per song wich gets me there, but i'd like to go faster ofc. Any tips on convincing/finding people whom i can work with as general
