With all the shaving methods possible these days, like the innovative electric shaver (which gives you quick shave) and the multi-blade models sold by everyone from Gillette to Dollar Shave Club, the tried-and-true method of shaving with a double-edged safety razor is still “a cut above.”
Step 1: Pre-Shave Routine:
Step 2: Apply Shaving Foam
Step 3: Begin Shaving, With the Grain
0:06 → First Pass: shaving WITH the grain
0:09 → Second Pass: shaving ACROSS the grain
0:14 → Third Pass: shave AGAINST the grain
Step 4: Finish up with cold water and a post-shave balm
What are your current shaving steps? Do you use a safety razor? Share with us in the comments!

As a Barber of nearly forty years, I'd like to give a few tips for a really clean, comfortable shave if I may... Start with the hottest water your face can stand... Soak a washcloth in it. While the cloth is soaking, deeply massage about a palmful of shaving lather into your beard and moustache. Wring out the hot washcloth or towel and apply it over your moustache and beard, under your chin and down your neck. Let the heat work the lather into the hair that you want to shave off. As soon as the towel begins to cool, remove it and reapply your shaving lather. With your razor, make the longest strokes that you can... Steadily and smoothly. Nicks and cuts are inevitable, so keep a Styptic Pencil at close hand. Start your shave WITH the grain of your beard, shave it smoothly and evenly... Then reapply lather again and shave against the grain. Once finished shaving completely, do as Preston does here and rinse your face WELL. PAT DRY with a clean, soft towel and apply the Aftershave Balm or any skin lotion that you're partial to. After massaging this into your face from the hairline down past your Adam's Apple, gently dab your skin again with the soft, dry towel. Apply your favorite Aftershave or Cologne. You'll be surprised at how taking these few extra steps and time, will make your next shave even quicker and easier. Cheers, Gents!

How about if the grain on my neck goes Opposite direction? It literally wings out from the center, left to right and I end up with razor burn all the time.
@slicksnewonenow
@slicksnewonenow Жыл бұрын
@@karterestill oh! Sorry. After that whole novel I just typed, I forgot to mention the most important thing... The reason you're getting razor burnt is probably because you might be applying too much pressure and possibly trying to go too fast. Take your time. Relax and enjoy your shave... In fact, once you get the hang of it, you'll probably get teed off if someone tries interrupting you when you're shaving 🤣 It sounds stoopud... But that's really a big part of my morning. I have a cup of coffee and a Lucky Strike and take my time.😁

I can't even shave across the grain without my face breaking out. My beard is too curly. Though double edge razors are the best, one pass with the grain usually does it for me. All of those five blade razors causes bumps even when I do one pass

I can see you use a frankenrazor with the head of the AL13 from Henson and what looks like the handle of a Mühle R89. How do you find that combination, Preston?
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette Жыл бұрын
Eagle eye! Yes, that's indeed the combination I'm using at the moment; it gives me, on average, the closest shave with the least amount of irritation I've yet experienced. The AL13's tiny blade gap minimizes razor burn, and the R89's handle provides some additional heft, which I prefer. I've also recently switched from Astra blades to Feather; the reputation of Feather blades as unforgiving made me nervous for a time, but cleaner cuts mean fewer passes, which means less irritation for me (I often do just two passes these days, with and then across the grain). Cheers! - Preston

Oh boy, not NIVEA. They make products with many bad ingridients. Back in the day, they might had good ingridients. I love the brand for it's history and how the packaging looks, but that's all. They are mostly made with cheap and unhealthy substances. Greetings from Germany.

What does grain mean?
@Rayle1993
@Rayle1993 3 ай бұрын
The "grain" refers to the direction the hair grows in. Most facial hair grows point downward, so when you're shaving with downward strokes you are shaving "with the grain". When you shave with upward strokes, you are shaving "against the grain" because you're shaving " against" the direction your hair grows instead of "with" it

Once is good enough for me if I do it consistantly. If it's been a while, I do a quick pass with an electric razor then use my safety to get it clean. Keeps it from clogging.

I find it that my skin doesn't like it when I shave against the grain with a cartridge or a DE. I get a ton of irritation after the first shave. However, with a straight razor, I have no issues whatsoever. I have never tried a shavette, but I expect similar results as with a cartridge or DE.

If you‘re careful and have shaved across the grain before, it can be alright. I guess it also takes experience. Personally I don‘t do it since the potential irritation/cuts just isn‘t worth it for me.

Depends on the person, but if the hair is already quite short, (like after the first couple passes) there's less of a chance it will guide the blade into your follicle. Also, gently press, don't use much pressure. It should glide along the surface a bit.

professionals would never shave against the grain. This increases the chance of skin irritation and ingrown hairs that can eventually lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
