I guess I'm kinda in that "weird" camp where I'm both extremely optimistic about the next 4 years, yet am also keeping my expectations in check and reserved. Part of that may just be cynicism on my end (after all, it feels like this is the first time in a VERY long while in which there is genuine hope for the U.S. and that the Overton window is finally starting to tilt in the other direction), being that I'm so used to disappointment and very little if anything changing for the better to where I've almost come to expect it no matter who is president. But there's also a part of me that also is truly just skeptical of how much the GOP and even Trump himself are real. Obama's phrase about Biden, "Don't underestimate his ability to f*** things up" can just as easily apply to Republicans, and we've seen in the past that they're very good at taking a great thing they have and letting it go to waste. So ultimately while I have high hopes for a second Trump term and it seems like nature is healing, it's still up to time to tell.
@Ohtiaraa

@@NickTheEnlightened Yeah, I agree. Very insightful comment. This is the first chance the GOP has had in decades to make real change but I also can't underestimate their ability to snatch defeat when they are lingering above the jaws of victory.

the whole idea of DOGE is to take someone who doesn't care about making more money (so they can't easily be compromised with like insider trading) and make it so that the government is run more efficiently. The US government is extremely inefficient and wastes a ton of money. For example, one of the first things that Biden's infrastructure bill did was put in a small stretch of heated side walks...... That should not have been done, especially not by the Federal government. Yeah its inefficient to have congress and DOGE be doing the same thing but congress hasn't yielded results so Americans are unhappy with our wasteful spending.

A military spending cut is not a military downgrade, it's a matter of how much is being spent to accomplish the military's duties and what exactly those duties are under an administration willing to massively downgrade foreign policy for the sake of domestic policy. In other words, better management, less responsibilities, more use of what we have in concentration on what we're most concerned about. That's a recipe for better ability to respond with the military while also decreasing the cost of feeding it.

@ as an officer for 14 years, I can tell you that we do not spend that for over-the-counter products. Your S6 can buy from Walmart for that. But if you’re looking for aviation-grade or military-grade nuts and bolts, you’re going to pay what aviation businesses pay due to the higher standards and requirements put into the manufacturing process. Everyone says “the military industrial complex” but nobody cares to look into mundane diaper manufacturers who make more than the top 5 defense manufacturers combined. The fact that people like you think an Ace Hardware bolt goes into an F-22, thus, we overspend, is insane. Especially when also having a conversation about how technologically advanced our military is. You don’t complain about the cost of a mountaineering D ring from a rock climbing store, then use a key chain “D ring” clip from Walmart as a comparable substitute. People’s lives depend on the 500 lb rating. That’s exactly how you get headlines like “35 die in plane crash caused by $5 screw”. Pay the industry standard for the parts. …and don’t just make up expenses.

Two other things to note: Trump has stated that loyalty to him and willingness to cater to his whims is the most important quality he is looking for in his administration. Actual capability to perform the job is secondary. This could lead to a generally more incompetent administration that increasingly turns toward corruption and grift in the worst case. Regardless of whether the capacity to afford it exists, the multibillionaires and big businesses who funded Trump's campaign are going to demand their payback in the form of large corporate and high-income tax cuts, just like the multitrillion dollar tax cut from Trump's first administration. This has the potential to balloon the deficit and push the real-money pain from these policies back onto the working class through increasing inflation, fees, and reductions in quality assurance from deregulation. Tariffs would not be anywhere close to helping to balance this issue and would tend to only exacerbate inflation.

Don't you realize that we rely on deregulated labor and no quality assurance for the goods that we consume from other countries? Deregulation makes producing goods CHEAPER when it is done here while reducing the pollution and climate externalities that exist within third-world slave nations if companies decide to start producing here because of the lower taxes. A lot of it comes from people who don't understand tariffs at all, aren't aware that we already have a lot of tariffs in place and that Biden even kept many of Trump's first term tariffs, and/or are just simply afraid of change because they've been cast under this neolib/neocon spell for so long that they can't even begin to imagine a reality outside of it.

In my humble opinion, freedom cities are the stupidest policy trump has. He essentially wants to continue the economically destructive practice of suburbanization, of building horrible car centric suburbs, with exclusionary zoning, with self driving cars, or worse flying cars. I am sure the average voter thinks these things are cool but these things are literally ways to waste huge amounts of money on, and possibly be more destructive than urban free ways. It would make far more economical, and practical sense to simply focus on reviving downtowns, by converting surface parking lots to buildings, and in fill development in areas of wasted land ( golf courses, fast food joints. ) This, and making roads in cities safer by lowering speed limits, and traffic calming. OH and getting rid of single family zoning nationwide. I do not understand why Trump does not want to do these policies, as they are actually great for the economic situation of the United States, unlike Freedom Cities, which sound like to me they will lose money and not be able to pay for themselves.
@Svevsky
@Svevsky 24 күн бұрын
I don't really see how speed limits will fix anything. Germany for example has no speed limits on autobahns, and this actually helps alleviate congestion by a lot. Also, abolishing single family zoning? Do you *want* a population collapse? We should encourage the founding of new families and make owning single family homes cheaper and easier. These massive dehumanizing apartment blocks are made for childfree alcoholic cat ladies (and cat dads) with no future and no legacy, and that demographic voted Harris
@newchannel-w6m
@newchannel-w6m 23 күн бұрын
@ autobahn is a limited access national highway. I am talking about roads within cities, which people have to cross. Lowering speed limits and traffic calming can actually increase traffic flow because people aren’t constantly going and stopping. Abolishing single family home zoning won’t make housing only massive apartment blocs, the goal is to let the free market figure out which houses people actually want. In many major cities their is simply not enough room to build car dependent suburbs. Such as Los Angeles, Vancouver, and others. Even cities like San Francisco and New York City which are considered the king of density, still have many areas which ONLY allow one type of housing to be built. And plenty of kids live in urban areas and HAVE for thousands of years. It’s laughable that only in the last 70 or so years it has been considered a requirement to raise a family in a single family home. Kids actually learn a lot more independence in a urban area, as they can walk to school, go to the shop on the way home, go to their own activities without being driven around, etc, etc. Car dependent suburbs also literally can’t pay for itself due to how spread out everything is and still requiring services. And it’s not like single family homes won’t be built anymore, it’s just that other houses, like low rises, duplexes, mid rises and others will be allowed to be built as demand demands it.

I think the portion of policy that will most likely fail is protectionism. For tariffs, the problems are as follows. A) Local manufacturing is EXPENSIVE to the ppint that it's not worth it (partially because of regulations). B) There are not many unemployed Americans. We have a 4.2% unemployment rate, and because it's just a short time (4 years) for a large increase in tariff rates, it sucks.
@MohamedMukassabi
@MohamedMukassabi 27 күн бұрын
Also, tariffs because of illegal immigrants and drug trafficking is not the best way to solve this problem. You should've just stopped at the military and the border wall.

Finally, does America want to be surrounded by Chinese proxies (Canada and Mexico) like Russia is surrounded by NATO? I think not. Just enforce tariffs on bad countries like China, but maintain free trade with friendly countries while also support policies that promote local maufacturing like tax cuts for businesses that establish manufacturing plants at home.
@edward_fm
@edward_fm 26 күн бұрын
If we create more manufacturing/trade jobs in the US im sure plenty of people would switch, because that subset of people who would switch are working independant contractor service type jobs like doordash and uber. These jobs are terrible but still count as employment, so the unemployment number looks low, but it doesnt matter because these jobs dont pay enough and lead to lots of taxes being paid on the part of the worker. Those people would much rather work a job with a retirement plan, ability to withdraw taxes, and these jobs would likely have health insurance and other benefits
@mrsoisauce9017
@mrsoisauce9017 23 күн бұрын
@@edward_fm you literally just ignored op’s first point: manufacturing locally is not deemed as being worth it by companies because it’s expensive af to do. The regulations will already be expensive to deal with, and it’d be a factory exclusive to the American market, since any tariffs that will be imposed are likely to result in retaliatory counter-tariffs that would make use for these factories outside of the US way too expensive to justify. Companies are far more likely to just take the hit in sales because of tariffs than they are to bring production back to America, and there are a shit ton of economists who agree with this sentiment

Trump needs to listen to libertarians. I know he may not like a lot of them for not supporting him (even though plenty did). Disagree with libertarians on foreign policy, drug laws, or whatever is fine. Libertarians are spot on when it comes to economics. Drastically reduce regulation. Cut as much subsidies you can. End those insane IP laws. Prosperity has almost never came about without economic freedom. Trump seriously needs to listen to Vivek.

Eh, I think there are even more possibilities for things going wrong, and it's more likely than you might think. Some big options for cuts to federal spending are Social Security and Medicare. A lot of Republicans have been salivating at the idea of further cuts to these programs, and that could have a pretty significant effect on a lot of Americans day to day lives. Social unrest to some degree is also highly likely. There are a lot of things that could potentially kick this off, but a likey issue involves his planned deportations. If they go through even close to how he has claimed, you will absolutely see pictures and videos of weeping children and old people being arrested everywhere. There will also absolutely be overzealous police/border officials committing acts of brutality. Mass protests are almost guaranteed, and it could be BLM all over again. Trump responding overzealously could also very easily be construed as him being the tyrant and would be dictator he's accused of wanting to be.

Like any decentralizing proposal or integrity enforcing idea, it'll never happen. The federal government shouldn't be directly involved in the citizen's lives (like with the progressive income tax), so the actual way it should fund a modern state is through charges on the member states or taxes on core things that directly relate to its authority (such as a land value tax on the land it is protecting as its territory or tariffs or material coming in or out of its territory). Don't worry though, nothing ever changes, we will continue on the exact same trajectory as the we were decades ago, just the characters and details of the story are going to feel more ad libbed again.

In Canada, there is a Carbon Tax which applies to things like gasoline, natural gas, etc. The Government takes all the money it collects in these taxes and returns it to people with big cheques, the rationale being you get a stronger return the less you pollute. Many people (not everyone) get more in the rebates than they pay in taxes. Despite this, it's very unpopular, simply because a politician can point to a sign with gas prices and blame it on the Government. People want number go down. That's it.

Abig part of what makes this unpopular is the bureaucratic burden on the system. Hundreds of accountants exist purely to process this act of taking with one hand and giving with the other. Canada famously has a big bureaucracy. Under Trudeau, it has grown by 40%. The public sector is by far the biggest employer in the country but its services are almost universally sub par and hated.

@Steadyaim101 I don't think the unpopularity of the carbon tax stems from some bureaucrats needing to run it. It's because of a perception of it taking their money away.

Wtf? How much revenue does the income tax make? Trump would have to do tariffs of 60 to 80% to even come close to replacing that revenue. Dude please tell me how much we bring in on trade and how much we make on income tax. I'm for selective tariffs but across the board is silly. Also I know we are all afraid of "bit government" but tbh we don't have big gov we have gov ran by corps.

We pay into social security. It is 100% tax payer funded. To say it needs to be cut is completely misleading. It has nothing to do with our spending. The issue with social security has everything to do with people living longer while the retirement age stays the same. See the issues in France from a few years backs.

You're no economist. All foreign countries will hit back with tariffs of their own. No one will shut down trade over night.

it is, feminist militate for equal payed leaves for mens and womens to allow couples to have househusband while the women work, both are good roles as long as they are chosen. Not sure what gave you the idea that feminist ask for women to not have work.

I do agree with you. In his interview with the Times, he said that grocery prices won’t come down as much as he promised. So if that holds true, if it raises even slightly higher the 2026 midterms will hamper his ability to pass legislation.

Couple things. Abolishing the income tax would be increadibly detrimental to the ability of the fed to moderate inflation and importantly deflation. It needs to be a thing just as a facts of economics. Secondly, the HTC is not a turkish puppet. Not even a little. And even if it was. turkey will not go to bat against isreal for them. There focus is the kurds not control of syria. Third you skipped the damage the threats against spending in nato does.
