One thing you might want to consider for making boring tracks sound more interesting would be modulation [flangers , phasers, choruses, tremolo, rotary amps…like the Leslie Speaker, and LFO plug-ins.]. This creates movement in tracks. Usually this would be done more in this order for me…but you could do it in whatever order makes sense. Write song…arrange song…choose instruments….find recording room…place instruments in favorite sounding room location…choose mic or mics…place mic or mics in best placement location…track recording with or without processing…create a mono or stereo rough mix…keep adding tracks to rough mix…edit tracks which can include or not include eq cutting (eq cutting can be its own step or part of the editing process)…balance mix with faders (if rough mix is not enough…also you will need to decide at this point if you want to mix the entire song together usually starting at the loudest section…the loudest chorus…or do section to section mixing and then stitch each section together…this is how they mixed in the 1960’s and 1970’s…as if the song is the album and each section of the song are the songs…seamlessly blending into each other)…fader ride to reduce peaks (a more transparent compressor than compressors) and to lengthen tracks (which can also be done with a fast attack…slow release compressor…but with less artifacts…sometimes that compressor sound can be nice if you want a tape compression sound…tape compression ratios are usually around 1.8:1 but you can do whatever you want…you are just lengthening the track)…compress (eq boosting can also be done before compression if you want the parts that are not boosted to be reduced by the compressor…therefore cut through eq boosting)…eq boost (after compressor for openness)….eq cut and boost to eliminate masking…group buss stereo pairs and elliptical eq low end of these stereo pairs into the center of those group busses (you can make a copy of the track…filter cut the bottom of 1 copied track and filer cut the top of the other track to elliptically eq the track and then move the bottom track to the center and the top track to the stereo location)…add delays and reverbs…pitch harmonize (for thickness if appropriate)…then use modulation. Then finish the mix from there…fader ride for moment to moment track clarity and track dynamics within the song…and so forth and so on…you’ll either do mix buss stuff at the end or at the beginning…depending on if you are a top down or bottom up mixer. The modulation just creates movement which makes things more interesting. If you want to hear more videos on modulation…type in “Bob Clearmountain” into KZbin’s search engine…he was very good at modulation…also if you want to see some videos on stereo reverb movement…type in Bobby Owsinski into the search engine…he has some nice videos on KZbin about asymmetric stereo reverb settings. He’s a pretty smart guy on mixing. You have a good day ma’am.
