The last story, she points out that she was never the athletic type. "not in the slightest", to quote the story She also points out that she was never invited to parties. Her dad was a construction worker and her mother is a stay-at-home mom. The end, she accepts a life where she's athletic and popular. Her mom regularly leaves the house at least to go to the gym, and her dad is a police officer. The implication being that she's given into the dream and accepted a life that was not originally hers. She was NOT grateful for her life of poverty. The alternative option is that she wasn't grateful for her life of wealth, but then the story would have thrust her into poverty to show her the things she took for granted instead of the guise of someone poor thrust into wealth. In short, she pulled an "Inception".

About that last story. Throughout the story the main character states that her father owns a construction business, that she doesn't like sports and prefers academic things, and that they both dress the part. However, after the dream, she wakes up to her trophy-filled, soccer girl room, and her father in a police uniform. And yet she treats this as normal, despite her previous characterization. I could be looking too far into it, perhaps the previous characterization was also fully part of the dream, but a part of me thinks that the end is only a continuation of the dream.

I have a theory about the Journey story... I feel like the 'dream' version of the protagonist was someone who lived in the house before Soccer Girl did. "Lisa" was a much more common name, say, 20 years ago, and the fact that her mom was a stay-at-home mom who pushed her to be a cheerleader gives the family a slightly more old-fashioned vibe. Lisa probably died when she was hit by a bus (as in the dream), and Soccer Girl "became" her in the dream, seeing everything through her eyes. Ergo why she recognized the room itself but not the possessions. I could be wrong (I probably am, in fact) but that was my interpretation of it?

Honestly a really good theory and by far the most creative one in the comment section so far. The only thing that goes against it is the fact that she looks in the closet and finds top of the line clothes in there and not vintage clothing. But Other than that I could really see that being the possible canon😁

In the first story, the "child violence" doesn't seem out of place or forced because it's a virus that's making them go crazy and violent. And honestly, who's to say that they don't make the adults go crazy too, and that's why Maddie's parents told her to go to school so they wouldn't get infected and go mad too? I really liked it!

If you're wondering what this comment is talking about, Cooties is a zombie movie, here's a summary: a school full of kids get infected by some tainted chicken meat, then for some fucking reason, all the kids turn into zombies, then a group of teachers fight off the dead kids, then they found out what's happening, fight more kids, then the movie ends.

If it wasn't for the great setup, I think the Sick Kid story would have just deteriorated into a blood and murderfest, but I do think it was handled quite well. And the last story was great, too. I completely disagree about that final story. It was trite and predictable. Who was the girl in the dream? Was this person just saying they dreamt they were someone else who woke up in their life? I love the way the author really dance around the fact that they were fat in the dream. It was some very weird undeveloped fantasy that didn't make a whole lot of sense
